The only reason I ever anneal cases is for case forming from one caliber to another, or to prevent neck splits after several firings.
I guess there are other reasons as stated, but I haven't found them yet.

Back during the ice age, we did it one of two ways.
If we were casting, we would touch the mouth of the case to the molten lead and then toss the brass into a bucket of ice water we had there for dropping new bullets.
One I had heard about, but never tried, was to stand the cases in a pan and fill it with water until just the lip of the case stuck out. Then take one of those hobbyist butane torches and lightly stroke back and forth, then simply knocking over the cases into the water.
I wasn't a wildcatter, but I was cheap. I didn't want cracked cases.
