Question for PA residents

I am thinking of finally leaving NJ and buying a place in PA and have a few questions. How hard is it to get a CCW in PA and what is the process?
How much land do you need to shoot on your own property?
I am looking at moving to NE PA where are the good ranges and good gunshops?
I will post any other question as I think of them. Thanks for any help.

Dude!! Go over to www.thefiringrange.com and talk to Geoff Ross. He just moved from NY and found out what Pennyslvania was like.
JMLV and a few other TFL guys also moved to PA recently.

Pennsylvania is shall issue. If you don't have anything that would specifically deny you, you have to, by law, be given the permit.
However, some people are reporting problems with the issuing agents in the suburban areas.
I'm now a Virginia resident, but the folks live in Pennsylvania. I got my permit in 2 hours.

Depends on the county. Luzerne seems to run a backlog but the whole county`s corrupt anyway.:(
Carbon takes about 20 minutes unless there`s someone ahead of you. Rare. Some counties ask for 2 local references and some do check them.
Decent gun dealers but if you do move, post your location for more specifics.

I just renewed my CCW and at the sheriff's office I was told that my application would be sent to Harrisburg for the background check. I still recieved mine in 2 weeks. Oh yeah this is in Tioga County.

I renewed mine last year and it took all of ten minutes. It seems to vary county-to-county.

There's been some posts on Packing.org about problems with Philadelphia and its surrounding counties. Apparently some of the Sheriffs have a problem with "civilians" carrying so they play some games with the law.
But hey, I can't complain, here in Maryland we have the most unfair "may issue" law in the country. So I can't even apply for a non-resident PA CCW as you have to have your home state permit first.

PA is an easy place to get a CCW. Sometimes they run behind, but my wife and I have gotten our CCW's pretty fast most times. I've stood in line longer at the post office. I'm also from Luzerne County.
Shooting on your property depends upon where your property is, what the zoning laws are, and what kind of neighbors you have. If you've got the room......probably not going to be a problem.
Not looking to pick on out of staters......but before they started to move here everything was fine. Out of staters move here and try to change everything. They bring their city menality to the rural areas and complain about everything. Gun ranges, hunting, etc
Lots of public PGC ranges strewn about the northeast........don't know about down by Allentown though. Might have to end up looking into private ranges.

There are many good shops and ranges in PA. Most people join a local Rifle/bow & pistol club-----once you move in buzz the board and you'll get lots of info.

I finally did and can't be happier, Berks county, CCW took 3 weeks. I have Twice the land and house as Jersey for the same price and taxes.
I can't shoot at the house but many good ranges and clubs abound!!!
Good luck to your move.
