I'm trying to detail strip my 590, for the first time, with the guidance of an armorer's course DVD. I am stuck on taking apart the bolt; specifically, the large pin on top that retains the firing pin/spring. I have smacked the crap out of it with a punch. I actually bent a punch in the process ("machined from the finest high grade domestic steel for a life time of dependable use" HA!) Anyone have an idea? Last night I sprayed the pin area with Break-Free and still couldn't get the pin out 24 hours later.:banghead:

I don't know for sure about that particular bolt, but a lot of bolts use a tapered pin to hold the firing pin and firing pin return spring in place.

Therefore, make sure you are pounding on the SMALL diameter end of the pin and not the big end. It's always easier to drive a small pin through a large hole than to drive a large pin through a small hole. :D

Also make sure the bolt is firmly supported on each end when trying to drive out the retaining pin. If there is too much "bounce", you won't be able to drive out a firmly stuck pin.

Also #2, when replacing the retaining pin, insert the small diameter end into the large diameter opening. This also works better than trying to insert the large diameter end into the small diameter opening. :D

Thanks for the responses, guys. I have been following the armorer's DVD, making sure to know which pins are one-way, tapered, etc. The armorer mentions that this particular pin is tapered to be loose in the bolt but tight in the locking block...he says this right after knocking the pin out with extreme ease.:cuss:
I'm going to try to knock the pin out with the bolt held in a smooth-face vice. I've been an armorer (for Sig Sauer pistols) for many years...never had such a defiant piece of hardware as this bolt.

Only thing I remember being more defiant was the FP retaining pin in my Yugo SKS.
