TOO HOT FOR ARIZONA CONVICTS

It's even hotter than usual in Phoenix, the Associated Press reports:

About 2,000 inmates living in a barbed-wire-surrounded tent encampment at the Maricopa County Jail have been given permission to strip down to their government-issued pink boxer shorts.

On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached 138 degrees inside the week before.

Many were also swathed in wet, pink towels as sweat collected on their chests and dripped down to their pink socks.

"It feels like you are in a furnace," said James Zanzo't, an inmate who has lived in the tents for 1 1/2 years. "It's inhumane."

Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago started making his prisoners wear pink, is not sympathetic. He said Wednesday that he told the inmates: "It's 120 degrees in Iraq and the soldiers are living in tents and they didn't commit any crimes, so shut your mouths."

Biggest grandstander in the state. Note that the majority at tent city are those who are not convicts. Rather, they are awaiting trial and cannot afford to post bond. Sucks to be poor in AZ.

Ok, call me a softie. If they are waiting trial, they should be kept in a normal jail. If my mother were to be arrested (God forbid) there, she would be dead in about 45 minutes.

However, if they are serving hard time then I have no problem with the tent city. If you arent willing to do the time (AFTER conviction), dont do the crime. This doesnt mean "dont get blamed for a crime."

The Sheriff of Maricopa County (Phoenix) is a total blowhard. This guy will do anything to get hes name mentioned in the paper.

Bingo, Mopar. It's "innocent until proven guilty", remember folks?

Except in a police state, of course.

Which is where the blind law and order types are taking us.

I doubt the truth of the guy "living there for the past 1 1/2 years". This is a county jail, not a prison. Sheriff Joe is indeed a buffoon, his senior staff is corrupt, and his department is in shambles. Our beloved half-minded transient senior citizens keep him in office. He retired after 30 years of similar service in the DEA. Want to know the real truth about him? Ask any of his deputies under the rank of Captain! Of course, they're under a gag order by Joe himself!
