Can someone tell me how to take apart these mags so I can clean them. I think I have to take it apart from the top.

I just learned this the other day.
Put 3-4 rounds in the magazine. Then stick a pin or small screwdriver through one of the holes under the follower. That will keep the spring in place while you remove the rounds.
Then, turn the magazine upside down and shake it until the follower comes out.
And finally, cover the magazine opening (so the spring doesn't go flying) and remove whatever it was that you stuck in the holes on the side of the magazine.

and remove the plastic baseplate by sliding it out towards where the front of the gun would be. If it is stubborn, use the edge of a bench, put watch for flying parts. Sometimes there is another little metal plate in the baseplate that may go flying...

You can remove the follower simply by pulling it out.

If only it were that simple to get them to work properly. Mine will not accept the first round . I have to press the follower in by hand, hold it in, and then try to squeeze the first round under my finger.

I am having trouble with mine so I thought cleaning it would help, the spring is getting weaker also. I haven't used it that much. I like my Smith mags better. How does other people like these mags?

The older McCormick magazines I have use a welded baseplate.
They are also one of the very few I have had the welds fail on.

There are two styles of Chip McCormick magazines.
One is the traditional style with welded baseplates, called shooting stars. This can be disassembled thru the method of putting 3 rounds in, holding the spring captive with a punch, removing the rounds, dropping out the follower and then removing the spring. If you have issues with these, replace the springs with Wolff +5 power springs. I have a couple dozen with thousands and thousands of rounds thru each one, and about a half dozen have over a 10k round cound with no isses on either the baseplates or feedlips.
The other style is the PowerMags, these have a plastic baseplate. You pop the catch in and slide the base off, very simple. Wolff also makes springs for these. I haven't had to do this to mine yet.
