International Hunting.

I decided to open a thread to see if there's anyone on THR who has hunted internationally, even in Canada or Mexico.

There are some amazing whitetail and muleys taken in Mexico every year, even with all their stupid gun regulations. Because I already live in NM and it would be pretty close to go hunt in Mexico, I was wondering if anyone here who has done it can give me any advice on getting a permit for a .30-30 or make a suggestion on which firearm would be easier to carry over.

I know their regulations say something about "any weapon which has been used as a millitary weapon" Which is decidedly vague, and although .30-30 has been a millitary weapon it's an old enough caliber I figure they can't think I'm running to join the drug dealer wars.

Well, suggestions, ideas? hunting stories?

I only know from reading, but you could find Mexican hunting-ranch websites via Google, and find out if I'm correct that they often provide rifles. Cuts down on red-tape paperwork hassles.

Yeah, I've found those outfitter ranches, but they tend to be more expensive. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience of the red tape of getting approvals for actual guns, ammo, and hunting permits.

The nearest Mexican consulate would have the info...

As dicey as things are down there, right now, I don't think I'd hunt at other than one of the well-established estancias.

I haven't done it, but I know people who have.

Plan on spending a few hundred bucks just to get your gun down there. You can only bring 50 rounds AFAIK, but you can buy ammo in Mexico -- you'd have to make sure you know where. I believe you need a guide.

There are pheasants and quail near the border here, and really good dove hunting far down at a ranch or two. I'd consider going somewhere like that.

Some people I know who used to just drive down there a lot have quit -- they figure it's not worth it any more. It used to be a lot easier and cheaper to get a gun down there, and like me, they don't trust the place or the corrupt authorities.

I am a Canadian Resident. You are allowed 200 rnds ammo, plus need to fill out a customs form to bring your firearm over. Do some research, and get hooked up with an outfitter. They are pricier, but will supply everything you need. PM if you need any info, i just hunt locally for deer/turkey in southern ontario, and would recommend a cabin in northern Ontario (you can also fish between hunting).
