Should I tell this guy he is violating the AWB?

A local web site has this ad running:

"DPMS panther assault AR-15 rifle. Telescoping butt, carrying handle, two clips, ammo, and a laser sight. Less than a year old, was bought in May 2003. Only 80 rounds or less shot through it. Excellent condition. Paid over a grand, asking $800 OBO. "

It sounds like this guy converted his rifle into an AW illegally. Now, I have no intention of buying the gun and have no idea who the seller is, but I'm wondering if I should send him a friendly email letting him know this is a no-no?

Can't hurt just to let him know, I wouldn't get all condescending and nosey about it though. May have been a conscious decision to remove the pin on the stock to make it collaspable, or he may have just meant "telescoping-style" stock, who knows. His chances of getting in trouble for it are next to nil anyway...

well, it's cool that he's including stripper clips with it, but no magazines? what's up with that?:p

obviously it is fake fixed stock.., he's just throwing in the "TELESCOPING" as a sales pitch to someone just a tad bit dumber than himself......:D

AR-15nutt,

You're probably right, but I couldn't tell from the picture and was going by the description.

A assault rifle for 800 dollars thats a good price. You got fortunate to find one with a three position selector. Mine is only two position fire, safe. So this makes mine just a auto loading rifle. It is not a assault rifle, why use media hype, cripes is a mini 14,30 assault weapons. The damn media labled AR-15 style rifles as Assault rifles and now gun owners who should know better use the same terminology.:fire: :fire:

Nope. It's a Homeland Defense Rifle.

IMHO, and with all due respect and general friendliness, rock_jock, I think you should mind your own business.

The man deserves to know if he's inadvertently doing something that could land him in jail. A little friendly, low-key advice wouldn't be out of line.

Well, we try to avoid calling them "assault rifles". Why? Because "assault rifle" sounds bad and we don't want people to think we want "bad" guns?

Sure, call him if you want to. No harm done that I can imagine.

(Of course, if he insists that he's breaking the law I'd point interested parties in his direction. Dummy.)

Asked myself that question many times as a range officer. Old fellow pulls out a late-model Norinco SKS with sidefolder, bipod, and 30-round detachable magazine and sets up for a session from the bench. Fellow RO and myself, in hushed tones, wondering how we'd let him know things weren't entirely kosher. Would he get pissy and tell us mind our own business? Or would he freak out because the gun belonged to his young grandson in college? Best case, he'd know folks were watching.

Fellow RO and myself knew a lot of local LE visited on weekends, they were regulars there as recreational shooters. None were present that morning.

It may have been a sin of omission, but we let the old guy continue, burn up his ammo, and depart unmolested. Didn't save him any grief down the road, but didn't give him any, either.

I still have mixed feelings about it. I go out of my way to prevent becoming an instant felon with my own 100+ guns, but being helpful to other gun owners can and does vilify you, regardless of your intent. :(

you could send him an e-mail asking if the stock is fixed or tele.
if he says its a tele then tell him "no thanks, its not worth the ten years".
when he asks what you mean you can tell him. that way your not being condesending or nosey and if the email in monitored or the ad is a set up by "them" then your in the clear.
