Got Two
I got a cherry 96 complete with matching bayonet.
Then I got a shorty, I don't know what it is called off hand, but it has a really cool micrometer (my word for it) rear sight.

Still looking for the elusive inexpensive 94 with all matching numbers and a good Lahti cheap as well or maybe a Norge 1914 (1911 type).

Also want to keep eyeballs peeled for a Rem. 700 , a Ruger 77 and a Win 70 in 6.5 to shoot up all the PMC fodder I purchased years ago.

Adios

I love my Winchester Featherweight in 6.5x55. I don't see myself going back to my 30-06 anytime soon.

I love the 6.5x55 as a sleeper in military rifle matches....there are a bunch of battle rifles that shoot worse than a M38. Filled with a charge of slow powder and 140 Sierra Matchkings most Sweeds will shoot sub 2 MOA at 100 yards, many will touch 1 MOA and do it with issue sights.

This turn of the centry bolt gun was so fun that I had to get Rem 700 Classic to see what the 6.5x55 would do in a rifle built in the 20th century--with this one, it is hard to get a group larger than 1 inch at 100 yards.

Take a look at this for some load data and results from a couple of high end rifles.

As soon as the rain slows down enough to see a target it is off to the range :)

I have a 1921 96 with all matching numbers, and the triangle on the disc is stamped over the "0". Shoots great. Bought it for less than $75.00 with two boxes of ammo at a Roses department store in the early 1990's.

1908 Carl Gustav M94 Carbine. 17"BBl, stocked to the muzzle. Light, short, handy, powerful, very accurate. Love it.

Got a 1914 M96, Carl Gustav, 21" bbl now, sporterized - or more precisely, *will* be sporterized, in the event my gunsmith ever gets it finished (which I'm beginning to have doubts).

I have a 1941 Husqvarna M-38 all matching in excellent condition that my wonderful wife bought me as a college graduation present. It's one of the most fun and most accurate rifles I've ever fired. Plus, the family portrait looks good with it leaning against my 1979 Husqvarna WR250.:D

No 6.5X55 (yet?/again?), but thinking about getting a commercial one. (My first one was an M94 carbine that we bought in Joske's department store in San Antonio long ago. We must have cleaned the cosmoline out of 20 barrels before we found a perfect one. I gave it away long ago, unfortunately.)

It strikes me as the perfect "deer rifle" in commercial loads. All of the .308/30-06-case cartridges seem to be ... excessive?... overkill?... something. These are unarmored critters that I usually shoot at around 70 to 150 yards. Why do I need a cartridge (currently a .270) that fully penetrated my last deer at 429 paces? (There was so much luck involved in that kill that I don't intend to shoot at that range again.) Even the 7mm-08 and .260 probably have the same blast and recoil characteristics as the .308 (at least in their 140-150 grain incarnations). That effectively leaves the 6.5 Swedish, or possibly the 7X57, but the 6.5 seems to have the accuracy edge.

Is the M70 Fwt any good anymore?

'42 Husky M38, was sporterized already so I put a B-Square rear sight mount on it topped off with a B&L 2x EER and now have a tack driving Scout rifle.

Yeah, I'll be playing Mr. Mom that weekend with wife in London but I plan on getting out there on the 14th. Now I just need to find a cheap source of 6.5 ammo. Last bunch cost me $13 for 20 rounds.

Gehwehr, there you go again teasing me with that Ljungmann. I've never seen one that nice before.

Jaywalker, the Winchester M70's are fine. You won't go wrong with one. I think I'm going to put an Ashley/Clifton Scout mount on my 1916 CG M94 with a Pentax 1.5x4 my new favorite gunsmith has in his display case before the season starts. I'll put up photos when it's done.

Regards,
Rabbit.

Is the M70 Fwt any good anymore?

I bought one new in Feb. My only complaints were the uneven barrel channel that was not even closed to floating (fixed by sandpaper and dremel tool) and too heavy and creepy trigger. It seems to shoot well enough given that I'm not a rifleman. I have no doubt this gun will do MOA or better with the right ammo and shooter. I'm a bit over MOA in my hands and my with first attempt at handloading the 6.5x55.
