I plan on applying for a ccw in orange county,ca this year. What are the chances of a 27 yr old asian male of receiving one? Obviously the biggest hurdle is going to be just cause for a ccw. Any advice on how to make this attempt a successful one would be greatly appreciated. :)

Two words:

Political Connections.

Unless you are very wealthy and have contributed heavily to local politicians and Sherriff's campaign, you are gonna bat 'zero'.

Visit here for progress on attaining CCW rights for Californians:

Jim March (member here) is a champion fighting for your rights to legally CCW in CA. You'll know what's going on locally and Statewide to fight the cronyism, corruption and racism involved in CCW-issuances.

Good luck.

How about 'just cause it's america...' ?

Orange County has done better under Sheriff Corona. I believe that you can potentially get a permit with the right "cause". Good luck

First, in Orange County it's NOT zero odds. They're not half bad in fact...many, MANY counties are way worse. Esp. urban coastal counties.

OK, first things first: OC is a crapshoot. Basically, Sheriff Carona is OK, or at least tries to be. And he's WAY better than the utter pirates who were in there before. So he's got a lot of incoming applications. He has a whole list of underlings who take in apps and review them, mostly Lts, some Sgts, etc.

Some of those guys are NRA members, some are Sarah Brady Zombie Clones[tm].

THAT is why it's a crapshoot.

We'll have to sort out a "good cause statement". I help people with this all the time, and have helped get quite a number of people their permits. I don't charge for this, and I haven't scored myself yet (really nasty urban areas, been through two major lawsuits so far - don't get me started). I treat all such discussions with the STRICTEST confidence, so much so that I can't actually tell you who I've been able to help (sigh).

People around here know me, and can vouch for me. You can also check out my website, at http://www.equalccw.com - you might find this page of particular interest including the video link if you want to "see me in action":

I don't recommend discussing a lot of details on an open forum. Even THR. Some poor guy on packing.org posted a lot of information about his situation on the forums there, and some utter morons decided they "didn't believe him" and pointed his sheriff at the threads. I managed to get the mods there to shut the threads down but it was probably too late.

That's a lot less likely here (much better group!) but...we may have grabber lurkers about.

FWIW, I'll vouch for Jim March. But then, who is Henry Bowman?

It depends. How much do you shoot? If you shoot once or twice a week and can prove it, that might be "good cause". If you regularly compete in IPSC / IDPA / Trap / skeet... that might be "good cause". Are you an NRA member?

If you want a CCW just because you want one, that might be harder to make your case.

Thank you all for helping out with some good responses. With all the helpful info from THR I hope I will be able to obtain a ccw and be able to help others in return. So if you guys dont object I would like to hang out here for a bit and contribute at times as well. :D

BTW any of you so cali guys ever get together and go out to the ranges? I've only been exposed to this hobby, sport, lifestyle for 3 months now and find it hard to find people to go with. :(

OPM Inc, what area do you live in?

I've noticed (no flame intended) that a lot of people on this and other boards, don't shoot that much.

If you want to try IPSC / IDPA or shotgun-ing. I know some great places with friendly people.

OPM, start shooting competitively. Everyone always says that they aren't good enough to compete, but that's what they have classes for.

Every saturday: IPSC at Raahauges
1st and 3rd saturdays: IDPA at Prado
1st, 3rd and sometimes 5th Sundays: steel plate matches (IPSC style) at Raahauges
2nd Sundays: 3-gun at Raahauges
4th Saturdays: 3-gun at West End Gun Club (never been there but will go this month if all goes well)
There's clay fields at both those ranges, and good rifle ranges up in Angeles Crest (near the 118 and 210) and Fish Canyon (near the 605 and 210).

Remember, you don't have to be better than everyone else..you just have to be better than yourself :)
