First, let’s remember that caliber is all that matters. Skill level, barrel length, bullet type and weight, powder, local hunting conditions etc. are completely irrelevant.
If you use less than a .30 caliber weapon to hunt deer inside 150 yards:
-You are a wimp that can’t stand recoil.
-You take pleasure in causing animals a slow, painful death.
-You are quite likely a member of the silly and childish tacticool club.
-You are probably a poacher
-You are an unsuccessful hunter, because anything less than .30 cal usually bounces right off of deer hide.
-You are an arrogant fool that vastly overestimates your marksmanship.
-The “systematic” evidence favoring your position consists of the time your Momma’s cousin’s daughter instantly killed a 12 point buck from 175 yards out while shooting uphill in a raging snowstorm with a .22 Short… while blindfolded.
-You can’t possibly understand why anybody would use a .30 caliber or larger.
-You don’t deserve to call yourself a hunter.
If you use a .30 caliber or greater to hunt deer inside 150 yards:
-You use a big gun in a futile attempt to make up for you physical, mental and or romantic shortcomings.
-You are a great big mean bully with extraordinary levels of testosterone.
-You can’t hit the broad side of a barn because it’s a proven fact that nobody can handle that kind of recoil.
-You take pleasure in wasting meat as most of the deer you manage to shoot are blown to smithereens.
-You use a big gun because you have no ability to exercise self control with respect to shot selection.
-The “systematic” evidence favoring your position consists of the time your best friend’s brother in law’s granddaddy lost a doe that he shot 17 times in the heart and head with a .243 from 10 yards out.
-You can’t possibly understand why anybody would want to use less than a .30 caliber firearm.
-You don’t deserve to call yourself a hunter.
I’m sure I left a few things off these lists, so feel free to add on. ;)

Elmer Keith, who had more actual experience than all of us put together, wrote often that he had seen 30-06 simply fail to do the job too often, and the game was lost even with extensive tracking.
What the cartridge can do is different than what the MAN can do. As far as .22 for deer, I don't think Elmer would even talk to a man suggesting such a thing. Sure, the cartridge can do it, but rarely could the man do it. There are just too many variables in a hunt.

The only acceptable rifle has an axle, wheels, and muzzle flash that would sear a wheat field . . . on the "less side," I prefer a .50 BMG necked-down to take a phonograph needle . . .

Hey There ;
Yep. You are right. I'm a wimp. I don't like getting beat up by my gun.
My .270 win. hurts bad as it is. But with the 150 grain Balistic tip ? I get the feeling you may have told one too many stories at the camp fire.
The .270 win. will drop anything the .30 cals will. But you may believe anything you wish. All of our .30 cals are very well suited for deer. SO are the .270s..... .243s...... and most all of the 6mm.... .257s.....
You must hunt east of the river. And south of the lakes....

Hey there :
Jason has it right. If a guy or gal wants to hunt with a .30 Cool.
No problem. May be over kill may be not. Very nice choice IMO.
But to come out and say the other guy is wrong using a smaller caliber ???/
Thats pushing it some. ONLY on the Web or in a gun store do ya here that kind of stuff.

For those that question the might .30-06:
This is an Exit Wound resulting from a .30-06 Remington Core Lokt 150 Grain JSP bullet. This came from the right hand side completely through the left front shoulder. The bone was completely shattered, and we couldn't really harvest the meat from that area unless I wanted "something crunchy" as my buddies had put it.
That hole is about the size of a meaty fist.

Damned if we do; damned if we don't. But yeah, I think you pretty well summed it up! :)
Your very helpful guide does beg the question, though, of what do you say about a person who uses a .299 wildcat on the .30-06 case?

Interesting question. I would say that both lists apply in that case. So a person using a .299 wildcat on the .30-06 is the likely very worst of the wretched.

Hey there.
I know I am late in the game here. But may veiw of the guy that uses a wild cat round is . If he has one, He likely knows how to use it. Average joe don't own one.
Wildcaters can be a different breed. They will try things that should have would have or could have.
Most of the time they are very good at what they do.
Ideas are a dime a dozen. But the guys that will run with are not.

We just wait up in a tree with a rope and lasso Bambi as he walks undernearth us. You drop down outta the tree on his back and ride him 'til he settles down a bit, then you just ride him home. Much easier than packing all that meat home from the woods and you don't get all those antler scratches on the hood of the truck. ;)

One of my neighbors in Texas was a wildcatter. His "all-around gun" was a .30-ought-10ga.
He loaded a 10ga. hull to the brim with powder, crimped it and put it in the chamber. Then he poured the barrel full to the top with 180-gr. .30 caliber bullets and sealed them in with duct tape over the muzzle.
I haven't seen him since last hunting season though.

Dang, I got up at 6:30 and started to load up for the range, and then I notice that the gun club newsletter says that today is a "workday" and all ranges shut down until noon or 1pm - bah.

I guess I fit the second category since only shotguns and muzzle loaders .36 caliber or larger are allowed in Ohio (ignoring handguns in this post) and I use a 12ga - approximately .7+ Caliber isn't it?

If you are a good enough shot and know where your rifle shoots at all yardages, then it does not matter what the caliber is. If you can put a .25-06 in a 2 inch circle at 500 yards and a .458 Lott in a 4 inch circle at 200 yards, does it really matter as long as you bring home your meat? DEAD IS DEAD!!!! If you have tack driving accuracy with anything you shoot, then shoot what is the most comfortable and fun to shoot.

Last time I got a deer was when I snuck to within 5 feet of a tirdy-pt'r by digging underground with a large spoon. I then gently poked my head above ground to find him bedded down sorta lookin' at me. Before he had a chance to bolt, I hypnotized him, commanded him to "stay" and then lunged at him with my Bowie knife...... except that I forgot it back in my Tacti-cool bivwac.... so I stripped off my belt while he was coming out of his trance and hung on like in a rodeo while I broke a 1"x12" Ironwood branch and sharpened it on the pavement while the buck ran across a blacktop road. Pretty basic stuff, really. I had venison for several days until the buck main squeeze figured out what happened and killed me in the middle of the night while I slept.
From that moment, I promised myself to use the biggest M.F. caliber that I could lift to my shoulder. I'm fairly small and weak so that turned out to be a Ruger .32ACP (which, of course, I don't have to lift all the way to my shoulder). Needless to say, I don't eat much Griz meat.

Humor, mocking the folks that get really worked up over the valid rifle caliber other people use hunting.
