Cooper Firearms (http://www.cooperfirearms.com/)

Saw two coopers on Friday morning and I was impressed with their fit and finish. Checking out the Cooper website, I'm drooling.

All you Cooper Cult members, come out of the woodwork and tell me about these amazing looking (and shooting, apparently) rifles. I suddenly have a hankering for two of these... one in 22LR and one in something exotic like 6.5 x 284. Top it off with some nice glass and... voila... 1000 yard rig.

Big bucks, though apparently worth it.

Yeah, I'm curious about the Varminter myself. They say they're good for 1/2" @ 100 yds from the factory, and I know of no other rifles other than customs that will claim that. Are they really as good as custom built rifles?

You have dug up more on them with the pictures of the actions than I have seen up to now.

There is a guy who brings a nice display of them to every gun show here in ATL. They are remarkable for fit and finish and appear to shoot one hole groups. Each comes with a target that looks like a single shot was put thru it.

According to the guy, they are single shot and come in smaller calibers, up to 308 maybe at the top. I am very impressed just from the appearance and test targets. HTH

I currently have two Coopers (a M22 MTV in .308 and a M21 MTV in .223) with two more on the way. My M21 MTV in .223 shot half-inch groups (five shots) at 100 yards right out of the box using 40gr V-Max bullets. On Friday, I shot a three-shot 5/16-inch group at 100 yards with my M22 MTV in .308 using a Sierra 150gr Spitzer Boat Tail bullet loaded with 46.5gr of Varget in IMI Match brass. I shot another group that measured exactly a half inch. Sven and fellow THR member "larryw" were at the range when I shot these groups. I also shot a four-shot 3/8-inch group at 100 yards using Remington 168gr Match ammo (factory loads) during the same range session.

I'm sold on these rifles. It's comforting to know that two more are on the way and completely paid for.

BTW, the factory test targets are shot at 50 yards.

About cost, I dropped anywhere from $1000 (shipped) up to $1155 (shipped) for my Coopers. The best place to find Cooper rifles is GunsAmerica. It seems that most of the Cooper dealers use that venue to sell them. All of my Coopers have (or will have) Leupold VX-II 6-18x40 AO scopes mounted on them, using Leupold STD bases and rings (my M22 MTV in .308 currently has Warne "Maxima" bases and Leupold PRW rings, but I'll be changing the mounts to Leupold STD bases and rings after my antelope hunt in October).
