To be frank with you, I just have a soft spot for H&Rs.
First shotgun was my father's late 40s H&R Topper 148 12ga. with full choke.
I almost cried when the screwed up the lever on them...
I love the look of them to this day though.

Also comes with a .223 barrel. This pic was for a survival forum showing how a city dweller could improvise fora SHTF scenario for only a little money!! Rossi 12ga single.

For value, I'd have to say the H&R. You can send it in and get shotgun barrels in other chamberings and even a couple pistol rounds for $85.00 each. If you have a rifle frame you can get a very wide array of shotgun or rifle barrels fitted.

My only experience has been NEF/H&R. Low priced but very simple and durable.

I've owned a Ruger #1, Contender, Win single shot shotgun and a couple of Savage ss shotguns. I've owned a 410, 20,12 and the 10 gauge in H&R they do a great job. Simple reliable lots of recoil. Some of the most accurate guns I've ever shot were H&R in 22 hornet,223 and the 204.
I look to see the H&R follow the 788 now that Remington owns it.

I like the old Stevens Single Gun. I have one in 20 gauge with a 32" barrel. Picked it up for a bill at the local shop. A very fun gun!

Thanks Goblin, I had forgotten about Rossi! I think ill add them to the poll.
I got my first single shot a few days ago. My Buddy sold me his 20 gauge H&R Pardner for $50. The only time he ever shot it was on a range trip with me, all we did was put 5 shells through it, so the gun is nearly new! :)

Bought a 12ga. NEF at a yard sale last week. Cheap enough to make a buck when I resell it. When we got home the black birds had come home to roost. I grabbed a box of shell and proceeded to kill 21 with 25 shots. Must have it's own built in radar. I guess I'll keep it.

NEF/H&R. Proven track record, made in the US.

I voted Baikal because the only plastic on the Baikal is the trigger guard, while the current NEF/H&R has a plastic trigger housing retaining the guts...also, another H&R change that causes problems is the fragile transfer bar which has a history of breakage....AND a plastic forearm knuckle on the H&R...downside to the Baikal is hammerless cocked/chambered round.
Earlier iron and steel H&R's without the transfer bar would get a vote, though.
Best "budget" single is the Winchester 37 Steel-Bilt....safe/uncocked with round chambered, as easy to cock as an external hammer, and American made....

I kinda like the hammerless action myself.

My first gun was an NEF 20 gauge pardner. I dont know if it is really the best but I hunted for years with mine. It is/was a good little gun.

H&R and NEF hands down the best in single shots. They look the best, they shoot the best, lockup tight as a bank vault door, are "MADE IN THE USA" by the "Single Shot Experts"!

That's what's so nice about the old Winchester Steel-Bilts....looks hammerless, and what appears to be either a safety button or shrouded hammer spur, is a manually cocked rebounding striker....put shell in gun, forget about it, when you need it just thumb back the button....best of both worlds, external hammer safety, hammerless speed and looks....

And to all you folk voting NEF/H&R, DESPITE the guns having a soft iron frame, plastic guts holder, hinge with zero take-up for wear AND half that hinge made of plastic, topped off with a transfer bar of known fragility, I either have to ask "why?" or just give you a medal for brand loyalty.

Gotta go with the H&R.
I just bought my mom a pardner from 1993 that's in 98%+ condition, with a case color receiver...
I have to put it in the top 5% of guns I've seen, aesthetically. Gorgeous fit and finish.

I;ve got a couple H&Rs - 20 and 16 and love 'em. Used them for everything. Right now I keep one stashed as cheap insurance - some bands made of old bicycle tires each hold 2 slugs close under the barrel and ready to go.

I guess this is not the correct reply, but when I was 10 years old in 1954 for Christmas I got my H&R Topper 12 ga. for going pheasant hunting . I still have it today and it is as good as it was when new. I guess you know where I am on the single.

I'll take my NEF pardner any day.
Cheap (got mine for 80 along with 2 boxes of shot), dead set reliable, and a good kicker at 12ga; nothing to really complain about.

Not on your list, but one of those old savage/stevens singles would make an awesome choice. I've got "a few" all work and lock up great. Dads old 20 gauge has been refinished twice it's been used so much. But it's still tickin' along just fine.

I've been wanting a reason to pick up a 12 gauge, and here's that reason.

I've got an old Stevens 94 single shot and a modern Rossi. They both shoot very well and fit me great. I've had an H&R and loved the classic looks but for some reason it didn't seem to fit me right and I could never shoot it accurately so I sold it.
My brother-in-law has a Thompson-Center Encore with 20 gauge, .223, and .50 cal muzzle-loading interchangeable barrels that he loves, but it isn't exactly inexpensive.
I'm a minimalist, so I've always loved the simplicity of single shots. An added plus is that when you're just standing around BSing and you pop it open there's an instant visual to fellow hunters that your gun is totally in "safe" mode.

I saw a youth model recently. They're so short they have to be seen to believed. They look illegal...
This one was a slug gun with scope mounts, ran about $200, and much heavier (thicker barrel) than typical youth at the same size. Still remarkable though.

Just noticed yesterday in the NRA mag that H&R is coming out with a trap version of this firearm. List was less than $350 so I expect when they start showing up the real price will be less.
Not a BT99 but looked interesting to me.

I admit I love it, and would never part with it, and it is a very nice example.
The best of 3 that I have owned, but they are still fairly easy to find over here.
Most make around £100 to £150, a few people advertise them for more, and I know where there are at least 3 for sale at the moment, all are ready to shoot as is, but one is another shining example.
It is also a very rare example of the "Trap Gun" version, has a 32 inch full choke barrel and a Monte Carlo stock in walnut, but even so it will probably only make £200.00 at most.
The first one I bought about 20 years ago, had a good bore, but that was lt.
The stock had been butchered, the metalwork was all rusty, and the action rusted solid, but even so, nothing needed replacement (except the wood).
It took me a couple of evenings with a can of oil and heat gun to get it apart, and a few weeks of spare time to get all the rust off, and a Saturday morning at work to polish everything.
Next I sent it all to the local electroplater's, copper and then double nickel plated the whole thing
Made a new stock and forend from a piece of mahogany, all basically shaped on various linisher's and belt sanders at work during lunch breaks.
Shot really well, although it was a good while before I dared take it to a clay shoot.
After everybody had stopped laughing, and generally taking the pi$$ I shot a few sets of single trap and got my only ever clean run.
And then some smart ass offered too much money and I sold it :banghead:
But it did pay for the next better one, with a handsome profit :D
Neil. :)

They're all good. I voted Spartan just to be different, new H&R was going to win. Then, I went and ordered a 10 gauge H&R the other day. I'm fickle. :D Actually, Wallyworld has 12 gauge Spartans for 97 bucks, but I was looking at the ten for goose hunting. I paid full MSRP, $228+ tax. But, that's the best price on a 10 gauge on the market. Next best is over 600 bucks for a Browning BPS, great gun, like to have one someday, when I have more to spend. But, I'm not sure I'd want it in 10. Anything I get for that much money can't be so narrow focused. I'm going to want to duck hunt with it, probably retire my Mossberg 500.
I mean, it could be worse. I know a guy that was heavy into trap shooting, son went to the Olympic qualifications one year. He was selling a Kieghoff 4 barrel set single shot trap gun.....$4500, and this was about a dozen years ago. OUCH! I just told him I had more of a Mossberg budget, LOL.

My Spartan 20 gauge qualifies as a light and durable field gun and gives me an extra shot. But, a single shot can be reloaded pretty quick. Friend, me, and his son hunted dove a couple years ago and his son used a 12 gauge H&R one day to be different, outshot his dad who used his pump. LOL! It ain't the arrow, it's the Indian. Kid's a good wingshot, dad, not so much. LOL One thing, though, that H&R shooting 12 gauge 1 ounce heavy dove loads beat him up pretty bad. He switched to an 870 the next day to preserve what arm movement he had left. They make those H&Rs entirely too light in 12 IMHO. Even the 20s kick pretty good in that gun. My new 10 gauge breaks the mold at over 9 lbs, however, I still think I might have to spring for a limbsaver recoil pad. LOL
