What do you carry auto or revolver and why?

I carry a Taurus mod 85 ultra lite.
I ordered a LCP or I'm on the waiting list like many others.
I was thinking of buying one more carry gun because these two are minimum for SD.
I was thinking a small 9 but most are unreliable,KAHR,Kel Tec ect.
I really wanted a XD-9 but it may be too wide and what if it jams do to lack of lube or lint build up.
Now I'm kicking the idea around about getting another revolver a SP101 in 357.I know I will have plenty of knock down power(energy) with the 357 it is almost 3 times as powerfull as the 38 spl.
I just don't know how accurate it will be w/ a 2 1/4 barrel.

Is the SP101 much bigger than my Taurus mod 85

I have a p95 that shoots really good but to big to carry and 2 FTE.
I have a GP100 in 357 and love it only problem is the 6 inch barrel.

I just wany to here from you guy's that have tried and what you ended up with in the end.
I put the age in so I could see what age group carry's what typ of gun more.

I am 56 and carry Glocks, G23 and G27 in 40 S&W. The Glocks are ugly, utility guns but work and are accurate.
The XD's just do not fit me or feel good to me, as to a SP in 357 with 2 1/4 inch barrel it is a close in defense handgun but reliable and does have some power, only 5 shots.
I have tried 380, 9mm, 38 spl, 357 mag and the 40 cal fits me just right. You just have to have a reliable, accurate handgun that fits you and you can operate easily. If you carry the belt, holster gun set-up must be comfortable or it may tend to make you not carry as often.
Just my opinions.

I'm 52 and carry a Kimber Compact CDP. I like .45 and have XD's but so far have not carried them. The CDP to me is perfect as it's thin and light and has the firepower I want in my carry gun.

I would not have a problem carrying a revolver like my 640 but for me it's second best to the CDP.

I'd be lying if I said I carried an Auto for any other reason than these two:

1. Capacity - More Ammo in the clip
2. Coolness - I know, lame but they are really NEAT.

I'm 68 and I carry a Ruger .357 magnum.
It's either an SP101, 2.25" or a GP100, 3", either in a Galco High-ride open-top pancake holster, OWB.

Shooting DA, I can keep all my rounds inside the 8-ring on the silhouette
targets. or in the black on the head. from 3 yrds., 5 yrds., 7 yrds., and
10 yrds.
The trick is to start close. Get it Right from there. Move back to the next
level. Work at that 'til you get it right.

My DSW carries a Kel-tec PF9 in a pocket holster. She can keep them all in the 7-ring at the same distances.
9mm's are a lot cheaper, tho.

We each carry what we like. I have a couple 1911's too.
I like the power of a .357 magnum. If you hit your spot,
5 shots oughta be enough.

Age 50-55.
Last year carried a 9mm compact polymer pistol.
Currently carry a x42.

Love to shoot both, but when it comes to carrying...
1. The pocket gun is MUCH less hassle for me to carry. Just drop in my pocket... as opposed to strapping a holster on my belt and plotting how to avoid exposure via a wardrobe malfuntion.
2. Last trip to the range, the polymer pistol had a FTE and the lady shooting it, looked at it like "you know I don't change flat tires or fix guns". I've got a wife and daughter that want handguns and they will not be autoloaders unless they begin shooting a lot more and can deal with the full manual of arms.

Olde and semi-auto.

I like revolvers just fine and prefer them for some things but I'm a little too used to a 1911 derivitive trigger. Trying to gain proficiency in a DAO defensive revolver is good fun and no doubt worthwhile but the results have not been such that the mutant 1911 is likely to be replaced any time soon.

I'm 27 and I carry a Taurus 650 in 357.. Its alot more comfortable to wear on an inside the waste holster then any of my smaller semi-autos, it won't jam up in a jam and its got the mother of knockdown HP's in her.

Its comfortable with my big hands too. All in all if I can't hit a target with 5 well controlled/placed rounds then I'd be pretty much worthless anyhow.

At 55, I carry either a Glock 36 or a Briley Commander length .45 ACP because I shoot them better than a revolver. Occasionally I do carry a Taurus 85 but I like .45 better as a carry caliber. Being flatter than the revolver, they conceal easier for me.

I'm 38 and have been licensed for CCW since about 1992. I have carried autoloaders for most of that time but recently I have gone back to my original choice, an SP101 as my primary carry gun. This time around though I went with the 3" model because I shoot it better than I do my 2 1/4" model.

If I do go with a 2" gun, I prefer my S&W 638 because I shoot it just as well as the 2" Ruger and the S&W is lighter and easier to conceal.

I like my autoloaders and still carry one on occassion, but I just find myself trusting my revolvers reliability a little more. Being limited in capacity is a concern with 5 shot guns, but I don't live a very high risk lifestyle so I am not too concerned about it. Besides that, an Sp 101 on my belt and a 638 in my pocket make for a pretty formidable combo if I feel the need for a little back-up ;)

I carry a CZ75B or ,occasionally, a CZ 2075 RAMI.

I'm 42 and I've only ever owned one revovler (Uberti 1873 SA Colt's wannabe) got rid of it many many moons ago. We also have a .22 NEF revolver somewhere in the back of the safe.

Really depends on when and where. In the summer more often than not I carry a S&W hammerless scadium framed 5 shot revolver in a pants pocket holster. It is light enough to carry without pulling my pants down. In colder weather either a Kimber Ultra Carry , or my new Para Ordanance PDA 45.

Where's "Both"?

Mostly an auto. Why? Because I'm familiar with it and like having 6+1 or 12+1 in 9x19mm. Best balance of controllability to firepower, etc. Plus the cylinder on the revo can tend to print more.

21 (till Saturday) and auto, because my revolvers are not very conducive to CC. I've got a pair of fullsize .357s, and my autos with one exception are much more comfortable and lighter weight to carry, plus they hold more rounds, I shoot them more, and I just like carrying them better. None of them have any reliability issues, and the only one I would call less than ultra reliable is the CZ 97B, which I don't carry anyway for weight, bulk, and lack of an appropriate holster.

I'm 52 and NEVER carry a revolver. Maybe because the only one I own is a Redhawk. No, I prefer autos and always have. I carry a Kimber Ultra CDP II in .45 ACP. My favorite caliber and favorite platform. The Ultra CDP is light, small, powerful, and amazingly accurate. I definitely hit what I aim at. I do carry others at times and always have a P32 in my pocket, but all my carries are autos.

revolvers are tanks that go bang... but i pick autos because i find them to be just as reliable (i shoot all of them often), maintain them regularly, they print less because they're slimmer, and having higher capacity than a 6 shot. of the guns i have that i can carry, i could have a rock solid reliable 19+1 riding strong side in cooler weather. however, i am thinking of a taurus judge with .410 shells in a fabricated mount under the dash in the car.

39 and carry both , depends on the situation and time of year which one.... I carry a full size or compact auto in colder weather. In warmer weather a S&W snub or a 32 auto.
They both have their pluses....auto has more capacity. Revolver is SUPER reliable...

48 y/o. Revolvers as primary. Either a Colt Peacekeeper, or soon adding a 3" S&W 65-6 to the stable. I do have a CZ82, but it's a backup/car type gun as it's not reliable for me.

Glock 19 IWB. Disappears under the right shirt, and 15+1 should get the job done. I carry a G23 for work, so the G19 is a natural pick because they are identical except for caliber and capacity. I like the 9mm better than 40 S&W, it is cheaper to shoot:)

I'm 40 and have always preferred revolvers (except a model 70 1911 I had to sell to pay for books in college). I carry a 340pd almost daily.

My father, nearly 70 has switched to a Glock 23 for his ccw. With arthritis setting in, he shoots the semi-auto better than he does his .357 revolver. He's a good shot with either.

(Just) over 35, and I carry both, but lean towards revolvers.

I can still tie my own shoes as well, thankyouverymuch.

I'd really say it all depends on having the right belt and holster. A Glock in a nylon holster on a regular dress belt will feel heavier than your GP-100 in a good holster on a good belt.

If it's a pocket gun, it's always a revolver for me. I just don't trust autos in that size range, especially when exposed to pocket lint, sweat and the like.

For primary carry, it's usually whatever gun I've been shooting recently.

I was thinking a small 9 but most are unreliable,KAHR,Kel Tec ect.

To the original poster... Not sure where you got this information from, but it is far from the truth. I have 3 carry guns, Glock 26 & Sig P239 both 9mm, and a Kel-Tec P32... not one of these guns has ever had a failure of any kind with any ammo. Yeah, it is true about the Kahr's on occasion, but there are many good options out there.

I prefer an auto for carry because they are more flat, hold more rounds, and are easier to shoot than a revolver. IMO, revolvers are best suited for big-bore magnum rounds for use in the woods. As for urban SD/HD, I am more comfortable with an auto.

August 5, 2008, 04:47 PM
I just have more faith in a revolver going bang everytime.
I also feel safer with a revolver in my pants ,that I wont shoot myself.
Most auto's have a lighter trigger than revolvers.
I know they won't go bang unless you pull the triger but I still don't trust it maybe over time.
I have a p95 and when you decock it the hammer falls and it has never gone off but I always think what if.I have also had 2 FTE and what if it was in a SD situation.
I will be getting my LCP soon but I will have my revolver on me most of the time also, until I have about 250-300 rounds thru the LCP and can trust it.
I asked the age because I thought more of us older folks over 35 would carry revolvers,I guess I'm wrong.

I'm 63, at least until next Sunday. For carry, I prefer a 1911 but when discretion counts as in hot weather I drop a KelTec PF9 or a CZ RAMI in my pocket holster. I own and love revolvers, too but don't carry them as much.

Well, nearly half of the "over 35" crowd voted revolver while it's closer to 25% for the young 'uns. Seems you had the generation gap pretty well nailed.

If you'd have caught me 30 years ago, I'd have been with the revolver crowd but the world's changed since then. Glock's army invaded Smyrna. People expect service autos to run and are, for the most part, not disappointed. Colt has gone out of the DA revolver business and that doesn't help.

Both and I'm 55 years old. Kel Tec P11, Taurus M85SSUL, Taurus M66 3", Ruger P90, Ruger P85, Grendel P12 .380, 3" Rossi M68, NAA .22LR mini revolver, just a few of my ever growing carry collection. The P11 and the M85 get the most carry. I own 4 center fire autos out of 20 handguns total. 6 of the rest are rimfires, one single shot with 4 barrels I count as one gun, the other 9 are revolvers two of those being cap and ball and two being single action Blackhawks. Two of the rimfires are revolvers so I guess I have 11 wheel guns total. I really prefer shooting revolvers, but autos have their CCW advantages and DA/DAOs sorta work like revolvers anyway.

I've been there, done that, didn't like it with 1911s, but other than that, I don't exclude gun types from my battery and I might get another 1911 type gun someday just for a range gun. I'd never carry one, though.

... there was no "both" option :p .

I always have my 642 (snubnose 38). Sometimes, my 5" 1911 takes the role as primary and the 642 serves as BUG (like right now). I shoot both well (for me :o), I am confident in their operation and both have proven to be reliable. In the future, I plan on adding a 2.5-3" Ruger Six series 357 Mag or a similar S&W K frame.

So my preference is for revolvers and 1911s. BTW, I am 29 yrs old.

Just carry what works best for you, and make sure it works. Then practice with it until it becomes boring :D .

I carry an auto for a few reasons. One is of course the high capacity of rounds that I have with the auto. Some may say that if a person`s good he or she doesn`t need them but I say why take a chance.
Two is because of the speed that rounds can be fired. I`ve seen the fastest revolver guy on youtube but he`s in the minority.

I`ve seen the fastest revolver guy on youtube but he`s in the minority.

That would be Jerry Miculek.

What the revolver advocates don't mention when they crow about Miculek and how fast revolvers supposedly are, is that Miculek's revolvers aren't stock.

They're "enhanced" by custom revolver specialist Jim Rae of the Smith & Wesson Performance Center.

The revolver Miculek used in 2004 to attempt to break one of Ed McGivern's records, had a special "V"-shaped barrel that was ported. Rae also worked on the action and trigger. Miculek fired very light handloaded target loads, with much lighter than normal recoil.

Give Miculek a completely stock revolver off of Smith's mass production line, with a standard barrel, no porting and no special work done on the action and trigger---then load it with full power defensive loads.

You'll see Miculek's times get noticeably worse.

Semi-autos of course, and I'm well past the 35 mark.

Semis are currently leading by about 4 to 1 in the younger age group, and by about 2.5 to 1 amongst the older group.

No surprise there.

Revolvers were rendered essentially obsolete for military usage about a century ago.

Since the infamous FBI Miami shootout of 1986, the revolver has been retired by almost every federal, state, county and medium-to-large city law enforcement agency in the country.

When I am legally able to carry (I live in IL) I carry a Sig P228. I like the capacity, the accuracy, and the ease of reloading versus that of a revolver.

Either way either one will be a good choice for carry.

I'm 34 and carry a 1911 99% of the time, as I am unconcerned with concealment 99% of the time. On the 1% of times I atually care that my gun be definitley concealed, and VERY unlikely to be seen, I carry a S&W m637 .38spl.

I'm 57 yoa. I've been some kinda Cop for 31 years. I've been in 6 standup gunfights. I'm not the character in a movie or Tv show so I know I don't need a HI-Cap Auto. I've never even talked to someone who's needed a Hi-Cap Auto in a gunfight. My Boss wants me to carry a Glock 22 when I work so I do. When I’m out on my own I often carry a Colt SAA. I’ve never fired more than 4 rounds in a fight.
I didn't read every post. Has anyone here ever fired more than say 6 rounds in a fight, not including a military situations.

I like revolvers better than autos...the way they look, the way they feel, and the way they shoot. But autos are thinner. They go better in your pocket. So that's what I carry.

I vaguely remember the Kennedy/Nixon debates, and I ALWAYS carry a Smith J-frame Centennial. It's a shame I can barely remember the debates, and don't remember what I had for breakfast!

Seriously, the revolver goes into the right front pocket ~ 10 seconds after I get dressed. If I feel the need, I might shift the J-frame to the left front pocket and strap on a 3" K-frame in a strong-side pancake holster. It's just sooooooo easy to pocket carry a "hammerless" Smith. Just have to blow the dust bunnies out every now and then.

If for some reason, I really feel the need to kit up, I replace the K-frame with a G19 or Colt LWC in .45. I think I've done that on < 3 or 4 occasions.

Auto and I'm 35 or older (70).

Because it's easier to carry totally concealed 24/7/365, it holds more ammo, reloads are faster, magazines carry concealed better than a speedloader or moon clips.

My first handgun was a S&W 642 because I was concerned by comments on the Internet about the failure to feed issue with semi-autos. After a few years of carrying, the notion grew on me that I would not have time to reload in a serious situation, nor that five rounds were enough, and nor that .38 Special out of a two inch barrel was enough. Plus, accuracy sucked. I studied reviews on semi-autos on the Internet and bought a semi-auto in 9mm, single stack, with a three point seven inches barrel. That 9mm uses twice the pressure of .38 Special and that this barrel is longer than that of the snubby, and that it holds seven plus one rounds with the ability to reload within seconds by pushing in a new magazine, makes it a clear winner for every day carry, and, its accuracy is five times better. It only has issues with Sellier&Bellot ammo. In the woods I carry a four inches .357 magnum. I'm leaning towards a Colt .38 Super 1911 as my step up concealed carry piece. I'm getting more and more interested in accuraracy. A clean shot in the head is the preferred.

Auto for capacity, and I'll admit, the image. I don't carry open, but when I first started shooting and buying guns, I went for auto's cuz they look cooler. Now I'm positively obsessive about researching gun purchases before I throw down the money, but I still don't own any revolvers.

It's jsut my honest opinion but most people carry an auto for the same reason a minimum.

They carry more ammo. I also believe that it's the whole they fire faster (slightly) than revolvers thing IMO.

Someone else said coolness factor and I would have to agree I find the auto to have a "cooler" more aggressive design than a revolver, but that doesn't say much because I don't know anyone that wouldn't piss of $#!t themselves if any type of gun, be it revolver, auto pistol, bolt action rifle, semi-auto rifle, hell even a muzzle loader rifle/pistol, was pointed at them. With that said coolness factor would probably only be a variable to the shooter as it would make them more comfortable to use. Of course beauty "coolness" is in the eyes of the beholder.

tblt, my two most-carried handguns are the SIG P229 and Ruger SP101. In police uniform, the P229 rides in the duty rig, and the SP101 is concealed. I also usually keep a spare P229 with me at work, but not on my person.

On my own time, I almost always carry an SP101 snubby, plus, much of the time, one more handgun. This second handgun can be another SP101, a P229, a Ruger Speed Six, or a GP100. The second handgun may be carried off-body.

Just about the only time I will be away from home, and carrying only one snubby, is when bicycling or running. The threat profile for a person "working out" is totally different than that for a person who is going about his daily business; cyclists and runners are not expected to be carrying valuables.

FWIW, the fact I have a police badge is a large part of the reason for the multiple weapons when on my own time. A private citizen has the option of breaking contact and fleeing. I swore an oath to do otherwise. Even if I do not want to engage bad guys in a shoot-out, I am still expected to at least be a "good witness" and remain on the scene to assist in preserving life and evidence, and that could be a bit hazardous itself, if the bad guys employ a sweep or clean-up guy, who takes no active part in the main part of an incident, and remains behind to make sure thee are no loose ends that need tying.

These days, most of the time, I carry an semiauto. The snubbie lives in husband's truck as an always-available backup gun. Occasionally I'll snag it to carry it, but rarely. The Bersa .380 has pretty much taken its place for small guns. The XD-9 is more often the carry gun, in a Jagwear belt pouch. Or the Kimber Ultra Carry II.

My two carry weapons allow me to carry regardless what time of year it is. I am more prone in the fall/winter to carry a heavier gun S&W 642 .38 or Glock 23. However most of the time I carry either my new LCP or
my S&W 351PD (.22WMR). I feel very comfortable and safe to carry either. I figure the BG is not expecting me to shoot back, so from that perspective I've got an advantage.

There was a time, long ago, when I drove a truck and joked that I was closer to my Ruger Security-Six than to my wife because that revolver and I had slept together on many more nights. That was back around 1980. I chose that handgun after reading Mel Tappan's book, "Survival Guns" and deciding that under the circumstances I'd likely need it, the revolver was more reliable and versatile. That was then.

Today, no longer trucking but with a legal CCW permit, I still have that Security-Six but rarely, in fact never, carry it. Instead it's become a nightstand gun. Either my full-sized or Officers model-sized 1911s are easier to conceal and every bit as reliable as that 4" bbl. Security-Six. Plus, they carry two or three more rounds than the revolver. If I'm carrying the Taurus PT140 .40S&W or Steyr S9 9mm then the ammo count goes up (both are 10+1) while concealability gets even easier.

I'll not claim that the autos are faster reloading than the Ruger with speedloaders but the auto reloads are definitely slimmer and conceal better.

I do have a J-frame that I've considered carrying and I probably would carry it were it not for the fact that my wife and daughter have both laid claim to it. They like it. Now that my daughter is getting her CCW I'll probably have to get a Taurus 85 or something similar to keep both women happy. They don't like the autos, recoil springs give them problems. So, for the female side of my family, it's revolvers. For me, it's almost always autos.

I'm 25 and I don't have a ccw permit so when I carry it's when I'm hunting or hiking in AZ. I prefer a revolver because If I need to use it I will likely be shooting at a greater distance than 10 yards. In southern Az desert where we have an illegal immigrant problem I usually carry a .357. In northern Az I carry a .22LR or .22 Mag.

I voted Revolver, over 35, but I need to clarify.

If I can only carry one gun then let it be an Autoloader, prefer a Glock 19. I carry three guns off duty, all Revolvers. This gives me two NY Reloads. The Autoloader has the Revolver beat in terms of reloading speed and ammo capacity, but I prefer the power variability of the Revolver and the fact that "if it fits in the cylinder I can shoot it".

I may decide to switch it up a little bit next year and carry a Glock 19/26 combo, as well as my J-Frame, but I may not. One thing about carrying a Revolver, I don't have to worry about any jurisdiction's magazine capacity laws. :)

I grew up in the age of the 125 Grain .357 Magnum being "The King of the Street" and have yet to find an Autoloader with the same proven track record. For me, if something works I don't plan to fix what isn't broke.

almost 40 and I carry both depending on circumstances.

The one place I will only carry a revolver is when 4 wheeling/hiking etc. usually its a stainless 4" .22 or maybe a 357.
More often than not its the 22, its light, easy to carry and cheap to shoot.

For ccw I go either way depending on situation. I can carry a 642 in a light clip on IWB while wearing elastic waist shorts and not worry about it weighing them down.
For full dress I prefer a larger semi auto for the hi cap, but I will also carry my 686 @ times also.

I carry a Smith Centennial AND a Glock.

Problem is, I can't tell you why--I've got a reasonable collection, but somehow I've gravitated to these two.

I think we all can agree that revolvers and semi-autos each have their distinct advantages--so why not have your cake and eat it, too?

Oh, yeah: As you can guess from the fact that I even know the word "Centennial," I'm 35 (or older ).

I agree with Rmart and anyone else who says that (if you can) you should tailor what you carry to your environment--different environment, consider different carry piece(s).

Still, there is that saying about respecting the man with only one gun--he probably knows how to use it. Given the choice between being backed-up by an expert with a single-shot pistol and a dufus with a high-cap, optics-sighted race gun--well, I know who'd I choose.;)

I just don't trust bottom feeders. I've had Ruger, Beretta, EAA, I've shot Glock, Colt, Walther, Bersa just too many to count and most did well but they all jam on occasion. And anybody that tells you different is................not going there.

I've had and shot many more revolvers with most never jamming. Actually the jams I've ever had in revolvers are from poorly seated primers in reloads.

So I just tend to stick with the odds, a revolver is more likely to always function.

I see that folks are carrying autos more than revolvers.

Did anyone see the post by the South African guy on THR who was attacked?

He had a Browning Hi Power. By the time he decided to shoot, the guy was on top of him. He tried to shoot on 3 different occasions, but nothing happened.

It turns out that if you press most autos against something enough to move the slide back 1/4", they won't fire. Not a comforting thought.

Revolvers will fire, but of course they won't fire if your attacker has the presence of mind to grab the cylinder. (assuming you're trying to shoot DA)

380s will fire though, because they have fixed barrels, and it is hard to push the slide back around the barrel.

i'm 61 and a retired le officer having spent 27 years on the force. unlike some cops, i'm into guns and have been shooting since the mid 60's. i carry all the time "off duty." no exceptions. and also in the house!! currently, i'm employed at a police equipment store that sells firearms. this has been my 2nd experience in retail firearms.

my duty weapons began with a smith model 19, then the newly issued smith model 59, then back to a smith revolver, and for a short time a glock 19. my off duty guns have been mainly compact .45 autos, but also included various other calibers no smaller than a 9mm. i have also carried revolvers off duty for one reason or another. again, nothing smaller than a .38.

last week i took one of my glocks, a trusty glock 27 to the local pd range for a session. this glock 27 had been absolutely reliable after being fired close to a thousand rounds. like always, i was shooting nothing but new factory over the counter rounds, this time, wwb fmj. as i proceeded to fire my 2nd magazine, i suddenly had a "jam." it was a FTFire. upon examining the round, i noticed a light primer strike. of course this had never occurred in this gun before and i was quite surprised. the round was chambered again and fired.

recalling my 40 some odd years experiences with handguns, i can remember the exact number of times i had a problem with a revolver and exactly what happened. that's because there hasn't been many. not more than 5. but i have lost track of all the times some mishap occurred with an auto, because there has been too many. for one reason or another, whether it's magazine, ammo, springs, gun, etc, i've lost count.

though i still on occasion pack an auto, if reliabilty is a factor, i don't think a "quality" auto will be as reliable as a revolver from a first rate manufacturer. that's because the auto is dependent on too many factors for functioning. when an auto jams, you'll read the same explanations: it was the ammo, it was the spring, it was the mag, it was limpwristing, and on and on. every reason but the gun itself. but the truth is no matter what caused it, you still had a "jam." and good autos will jam. much more often than a good revolver.

I carry the PPK when it is the only thing I can carry but I much prefer something larger and with more firepower. I got the XD9SC because I thought it would be easiest to conceal and still give a fair amount of firepower; however I discovered my XD45Cs fit the same holster and since the 4" is a more comfortable to wear IWB than the 5" that is what I generally carry, I also prefer 10 rounds of .45 to 10 rounds of 9mm.

Carry a 4" bbl 686+ backed with 2 S/L's stuffed with some nasty BB ammo and all is well.

If I got sent to hell or another planet, I'd have 2 firearms with me - my WASR10 and my 686+and feel pretty good about keeping myself in one piece.

And no - a full size 4" bbl .357 mag is not hard to conceal - even in shorts and a t-shirt. So much so I'll probably carry it on my next Hurricane evac.

Which, given Ike's proximity might be sooner rather than later
