I shot loads today with both powders, and the AA #5 really seemed to blow a lot of residue all over me. I was just like shooting a suppressed 22LR. Is this common? My Titegroup loads didn't do this. Is Titegroup just a cleaner powder?

AA#5 is pretty slow; I think it's a little faster than Blue Dot. Titegroup is fast, about like Red Dot.

Any powder will burn dirty if you load it too low.

AA #5 is a great powder for the .45. It sounds as if your load was too light. Use AA #2 or another relatively fast powder for light .45 loads or stick with Titegroup for it. I am not a Titegroup fan, but many like it a lot.

I would go with AA #2, WST, Clays, Competition, N310, or N320 before Titegroup, but to each thier own.

Don't forget Promo and Red Dot.

I have not tried Red Dot for light .45 loads, but it should work well. :)

Don't forget Titegroup. He already likes it, and it's cleaner for him. If it works, keep it.

The heaviest load I took to the range last time was with AA #5. I loaded a 200 grain LRNFP bullet with 8.7 grains of AA #5. I still got blasted with junk. I'll load a little stouter and see if I can't use up the rest of my #5. Thanks guys.

Red dot works very well on a light 45 load. About 4.5 Gr under an 185gr lead should keep it around 950 or 1000 fps.

With lead bullets AA5 leaves a good bit of junk, but very little soot. The junk is soft, and has never caused me any problems. Titegroup produces much less junk than AA5, but burns hotter. A lot more soot, and much more gun cleaning effort. I like Titegroup with jacketed bullets, but prefer AA2/5 with lead.

W-231 is an old standby with lead in the .45. Well worth a try. Clays is also. It is a feal favorite with lead and the .45

I agree with pinkymingeo, Titegroup is not the best choice with lead, but if you like it, and it is working for you, go for it.

I never used AA #5 with lead in the .45, just AA #2, so maybe it acts different with lead, because I have found it to be super clean with plated or jacketed, without blasting crud etc.

I like WW231 for .9mm, .40 and .45 or HP 38(ok, it's suppost to be the same thing as HP-38)
