someone told me thats its illegal to saw off the barrel of a shotgun at all, even IF its still over 18". Is this true?
I have a shotgun that i want to shorten the barrel on, but It will definitely still be over 18".
Iv done some searching, but i cant find anything that specifically relates to this subject.

As long as the barrel is 18" and the OAL is 26", you can saw to your heart's content. Hack away.

No, it's not true. Just make absolutely sure that the barrel is truly over 18", measuring from the bolt face to the muzzle. People HAVE been arrested for having a barrel that is 1/4" too short.

Not true. As long as it is at least 18" from closed bolt face to the muzzle. Measure inside the barrel with a dowel. I would go 18.5" to be on the safe side and if the muzzle is damaged it can be fixed and crowned without going under 18".

I know someone who was arrested for a barrel 1/32" too short! Shotgun was confiscated never to return.

If you're really paranoid, measure from the muzzle to the protruding firing pin and then add 1/2".

Some states require 30 inches overall in addition to the 18+ inch barrel length.
