Well, much to the disappointment of my checkbook, I stopped by a LGS today and spied a S&W model 36. The serial number is J371xxx, which puts a 1976 manufacture date on it. It is in real nice condition with a small turn line. The odd thing is that it is a square butt with a 2" bbl. I can't find any indication that S&W did this combo except for a small run of guns that were for the Massachusetts State Police and marked as such. The square butt was associated with the 3" bbl gun.
Have any of you had/seen one of these?
(I paid $345.00, which was probably too high).

NYPD used to field thousands of them. The square butt Chief Special was pushed over the round as being easier to shoot. Given the price of the older Smiths lately I am not sure you payed to much. You have a nice revolver, enjoy it! Bill

I think I'd have paid that. In fact, I kind of did.
$345 for a super shape Model 36 is NOT too much. The square butt is kind of cool - I only have one square butt J-frame, a 3" Model 36.

Not from what I've seen around here lately. And a square but to boot. Not bad at all!

$345 - I'll take it :D
I think you did good - not a steal, but good.
Clean S&Ws are getting tough to find.

I bought a used one about eight years ago. I replaced the original grips with these pachmayr's. My friend has a round butt M36 with the same grips. Looking at them side-by-side, you can't tell which one is the square butt.
I saw a 2" Model 36 flat latch with a square butt and a Tyler grip for $370 today, and it had some cosmetic issues. So I think you did well. I almost bought that one, too. :uhoh:

on a great little S&W J-frame; as the square butt model 36's are kind'a
rare in my neck of these old woods~! Heck, I gave $350 for a 99 per
cent S&W 2" factory nickel, pinned barrel .22LR "Kit Gun*" over a year
and a half ago. I guess I'm just a S&W J-frame luv'er~! :D
*FootNote: its also a square butt model; but without box and docs.
