This will be nothing more that an opinion Thread. There was a time everyone stayed away from Taurus guns as they had a rep as poor quality weapons.
I just bought a Taurus 1911 45 ACP which is a heck of a performer. I sold a Springfield 1911 45 ACP which liked to JAM a lot. So what is the general opinion of the Taurus name today????

Hello
I have 2 a PT-140 Mill. Pro. and a PT-24/7. Both are built well. If there ever should be a problem they have a life time warrantee. :)

I have owned several Taurus guns over the years and have never been disappointed with any of them. I just picked up a little PT-25 that I want to keep in my car so that if it gets stolen from out of my lockbox I can easily replace it with another and it wont be like loosing a Kimber or a Kahr. I'd like to find me another PT-99 in SS that I can get for cheap.

I have two 24/7s.
I really like them, I think the quality is very good.
They're comfortable to shoot and carry.
I am very frustrated with Taurus customer service.
Spare parts are hard to get, expect long delays for anything ordered
from them.

My opinion:
I wish they would concentrate on manufacturing fewer models.
They seem to add a new model to their catalog every year or two.
There are 24/7s, 24/7 Pros, Millenium Pros and now the 24/7 OSS.
Not to mention the Beretta knockoffs, the new 800 series and their revolver line-up.
Repair parts for the polymer pistols are not stocked anywhere.
They have too many "irons in the fire".

from what i gather from looking, listning and hands on, the 1911's are good to go to date, not many issues if any. it is nice that they have a lifetime warranty but getting work done takes time, more than with other companies.

I currently have 3 Taurus and a Rossi (made by Taurus). All have gone bang when I pull the trigger, no FTF, or FTE. If I keep em clean, they seem to work just fine. The Rossi, is so tight that if I don't keep the cylinder face clean it will drag on the forcing cone after about 25 rds. That is tight to me.

Own one taurus (the infamous "Judge"). Love it. Will be buying another taurus in the future.

There's several other brands that have a bad rep, I own a lot of them because I buy them cheap from owners who prefer to be fan boys :neener:

Currently, they don't build anything that appeals to me, so that makes it pretty easy..

I had a 431 blued 3" 44 Spl that was a pretty nice revolver. Nice bluing, shot well, accurate and reliable. It suffered in comparison to the S&W 696 I owned at the same time; however when I decided that 44 Spl was a caliber I could live without, both went away... I miss both a litle.

If I couldn't afford any other 1911, I would consider a PT1911; as a matter of fact, a friend of mine is currently considering one. I have not (and will not) try to influence his decision one way or another.

Currently have two Taurus pistols. A PT111Mil/pro and a PT22. Both have thousands of rounds through them and are working fine and have had no problems.

In revolver guise I have 3 older Taurus revolvers that are over 20 years old.
Timing is good, cylinder lock up is tight, and no end play. Very accurate guns.

Models 65,66 that are in .357 magnum and the 85CH in .38 Special.

Dureability and longevity have been the bywords of these guns.

Have three newer revolvers though one is a cousin to Taurus.
Models 66,82, and a Rossi 462 snub gun. These are all doing their jobs fine without any troubles.

I have a PT 24/7 Pro .40 that was the first handgun I bought. I have had it for almost two years and never had any issues with it. My friend recently bought a PT92 and he loves it, I will probably be buying one of those in the near future unless I find a good deal on a Beretta 92.

I have no complaints about my Taurus and would not hesitate to buy another.

I have a PT745 MilPro. It would not reliably feed my first batch of homeloads. It has eaten everything else (including all subsequent homeloads).

I'd buy another Taurus.

I consider my 24/7c of equal (good) quality with my S&W M&P - my PT917 is as good as any Beretta 92 I've seen, and my 650 .357 revolver is as good as the S&W revolvers I've owned.

I have the MilPro and 24/7 series, each in 9/40/45. Am looking at a PT1911.

My PT145 is my EDC. Admittedly, I'm new to CCW, but I've been carrying it concealed everywhere on my property IAW state law for over a year. No problems.

Yeah, I'm a fan

A lot of people think bad about their past guns, which i suppose can be accurate. Their newer guns, however, have been pretty clean in their reputations. Taurus has a pretty good warranty and customer service these days so if something does go wrong with your gun, im sure someone will help you out.

Well, here is my take:

If Taurus, as a company, were THAT bad, they would have shut down years ago. Jennings, Bryco, etc. are good examples of junk.

Granted, Taurus may not have been all that friendly, but neither is HK, Steyr, Glock, nor Colt customer service. It depends on the day, the customer's attitude when calling in, and also the specific problem with the gun.

Nevertheless, Taurus still thrives, introduces new models, fixes designs based upon failures and also wins new customers.

I guarantee some junky models have slipped through the production line, to the customers. I am almost certain that I would be in a rage, also, if I were the recipient of one of those defective guns.

I have been lucky, though. Mine have been good. Auto and revolver. Not the best, not hte most refined, not the most prestigious name to own, and also not worth reselling. BUy it, shoot it, keep it, and keep shooting it.

I think I detect the rich aroma of Gun Snobbery...

Point out facts and you call snobbery......

Taurus has been around for a very long time. Years ago they had a reputation for producing real junk. They seem to have some real supporters and some real detractors. If you look at the threads pointed out you see that some people have given real first hand accounts of problems. Is it more than other companies? Who knows, these threads seem to make you think the worst of the company / product under attack.
One thing that does seem to continue is that Taurus Customer Service is more of a problem than the product itself. I consider customer service very important in considering if I purchase a new firearm. If I had a friend who had a Taurus 1911 that had given him NO problems and he offered to me for sale, I would consider. But the issue still remains, if Taurus wants to shake the label it better step up and change its Customer Service. RIA seems to be able to get the job done. Even Hi-Point has found a way to deliver good customer service.

Yes,

I watched a shooting buddy about go crazy trying to get a pistol fixed. After multiple trips to Taurus and numerous phone calls with no idea what was wrong, or where the pistol was, or just rude customer service phone calls he finally dumped it.

Might I suggest you go back and read what was posted.

And one last comment. If you read my post I feel that the problem is more with Customer Service, not the product. YOU decide how important that is to you. If you got a good one, congratulations, if not, well good luck.

Lets see,
1.. Broke gun, lifetime repair. bad customer service.:scrutiny:

2.. Broke gun. No lifetime repair, great customer service. :uhoh::eek:

what to do

Point is every manufacture will have a bad product every now and then.

Whether its a gun, car, baby toy, or food. Someone somewhere will put out a faulty product now and then.

i think it may be better to have crapy customer service and get my item fixed, then great service and still have a broken item .

but that's just my opinion. ;)

my wife and i have one (each) we both like them very much. the only thing i do not like is there is not much adjustability to the sights. both of our guns shot to the right, and low. we corrected the shooting to the right, but there is no adjustment for height. as for their customer service, my wifes gun came with only one key, so i called to order a second. they did not have one in stock. they took my information, and 2 weeks later, one showed up @ n/c. since we have had no other issues, that is all i can tell you about it. so for me, so far, so good.

I've got a Taurus Mil-Pro 40 that has been outstanding, about 3600 rounds out of it so far, no failures.:D My dad has a Taurus 24/7 and a Tracker 41 mag, again, great guns. Based on my experience so far, I'll continue to buy them, I think they are an excellent bang for the buck.:)

Right now, I'm trying to scrounge up $350 so I can buy my dad's 24/7 with (4) 15 round magazines. At the last gun show, he was going to trade it off for a Walther P-99, I said "Dont, I'll buy it"! Nothing wrong with his Taurus, he just decided he wanted the Walther.

I only have expirience with newer production Tauri..I own 2 and have shot a slew more..never had or heard of any problems from anyone I know. Im sure problems are out there but like someone posted earlier. if they were THAT BAD, they'd be out of buisnes by now...but its the opposite. they are thriving and have been around over 20 years...If they make something else I want, I'll buy their product again.

I cannot speak to the other guns in the Taurus product line but I have had the opportunity to see one example of a Taurus 1911 with a rail. The frame was cut unevenly for the beavertail grip safety, there was a shim holding the firing pin stop in place, and the small parts seemed to have been poorly fit together. The gun was like that from factory.

The gun was owned by a friend. It did work for the 300 rounds he shot through it before trading it. However, after seeing it I came away with the impression that Taurus' version of the 1911 was not something that a dedicated 1911 shooter would be very happy with owning. As someone who does not follow the Taurus line, this one example left me with a poor impression of the brand. I concede that it may be unfair to have a negative view of the brand based on one bad example, but there's something wrong with their QC to let that a pistol with multiple manufacturing defects out of the factory.

i guess if my PT1911 looked like your friends did i may have had the same thoughts,
sounds like quality control was out sick that day,
i even had an older 92 9mm that my dad talked me out of, he bought a Glock when he went back part time as a LEO and could not get the hang of the Glock. he took my 9 mm and qualified with it. he sold the Glock and now carries my old 92 that must have had a few thousands rounds out it.

I can't tell you a thing about their customer service. I have three, a Gaucho in .45 Colt, PT92, and a PT1911. My grandson has a PT1911. My son -in-law had a PT92 that was stolen and replaced it with another PT92. None of them have given a problem. All are well fitted and finished. I would buy another.

I look at guns before I buy them. If I found one to have a problem in the fit or finish I wouldn't buy it. Just that simple.

It never ceases to amaze me that people will drop good money on a gun without checking it out before filling out the paperwork.

I've had good luck with even Century made guns because with them I've rejected typically three to six before finding the one I was willing to buy.

I've had nothing but good luck with my Taurus guns, but have to say only my PT-92 and PT-100 are favorites, although my new .45ACP OSS is moving up the more I shoot it. Side by side with my XD45, I'm starting to lean towards the OSS, the slightly smaller grip (12 rounds vs. 13 for the XD) makes it fit just enough better to make a difference.

I have a Taurus m66, and so does one of my friends, both in .357.
They are both excellent guns, but being made 10 years apart, they are completely different, trigger, hammer, rear sights, grips, even markings.

I don't know much about this, but maybe some of the problems were with one generation of the guns or another?

I too have read all of the complaints against Taurus on many messageboards. There are just as many PRO-Taurus comments. Customer service seems to be a very genuine problem for the Taurus guns with problems. But most Taurus guns never go back. Like many other gun manufacturers, Taurus seems to sell the beta-test versions to the public for field testing---they are not alone in this! For example, the Millenium pistol had some problems, and the Millenium Pro had them fixed.

All that I personally know, is that I had a PT-92, and it was not only beautiful and perfectly formed, but it shot any ammo that I could find accurately! It is the one gun that I most regret having to sell. I would buy another Taurus, and probably will......................elsullo

If you get a good Taurus, it will work well and you'll be happy with it. If you get a bad one, it will probably never work and you'll ne miserable until you get rid of it. Taurus puts out a lot of good pistols. But they're getting a reputation for letting way too many bad ones get into circulation. And they don't have the service department to handle the volume of junkers, apparently.

I wouldn't buy a Taurus that I couldn't handle extensively.

I have a PT111 Milpro, and its getting sent back to the factory soon. I've had nothing but fail-to-extracts with that pistol, no matter how I clean it, what type of ammo i give it (it liked hydrashok, but I don't like $1 per squeeze at the range), or anything. 2-3rds per 10rd magazine will jam up. Good thing it has that warranty. Otherwise I'd lump it in with the Highpoints and Lorcins and get rid of it.

I guess I'll pick up the bat and whack this dead horse...AGAIN...but I have a couple of 66s made about 10 years apart. The older one is a hammer block action, the newer a transfer bar action. That's how different they are. The newer one has a S&W quality smooth trigger, the older one is a little notchy and has a tiny bit of creep in single action. Both are very reliable, tight, perfectly timed, always go bang, and are very accurate.

I also have a M85SSUL that gets lots of carry.

Picked up some old PB (DuPont) powder and thought I would try some while I was set up loading 45acp.
I used the min starting load, gun worked fine with 185jhp no FTF/FTF the rounds felt very light in the recoil dept. if I use this powder ill bump it up a bit.

If you're looking at bang for the buck, it's hard not to look at a taurus - I currently have a 24/7 C that has not failed me once, is nice to shoot and accurate for a compact. I'd buy another. You can start any thread about any manufacturer and find people who don't like them, and I'm by no means a brand loyalist, so it doesn't hurt my feelings if you dislike Taurus - but they have a nice selection of models and hard-to-argue with-prices.

I have several Taurus pistols and revolvers and they are all good for the money I spent on them. The 85 and Judge are probably my favorites. I have a couple of PT22's and they burp once in a while, but I found they are somewhat ammo sensative and need to be kept clean. Otherwise, no problems. They all finction much better than the one and only Kimber I had. Worst customer service I ever saw.

Hi,
I am contemplating a Tracker in .44 mag to carry mostly hunt occaisionally, but I just don't like the ports since it causes increased muzzle blast and loss of use of snakeshot. On the other hand it is light. Decisons decisions.

Tinygnat and I can both tell you a long and sordid set of Taurus stories. Both of us REALLY WANTED to like our Taurus firearms but were let down many times and then basically got salt rubbed into the wounds by Taurus customer NON-service.

As a result we both dumped all of the "troubled" Taurus we had (and took a bath doing so) and also sold the couple of remaining reliable ones because after the other "adventures" we felt it was just a matter of time before they would have trouble as well.

Taurus tries some neat stuff, but my own personal experience with multiple firearms is that their QC is just sloppy and they push out a lot of junk for every "pearl".

I own two Taurii, PT-92 and PT-111Mil-Pro.

Love both of them. During my last range trip, my PT-111 was 100% reliable while my Sig CPO P229 was giving me all kinds of problems.

So far, FOR ME...
new PT-111Mil-Pro >> Sig CPO P229

I had a Rossi Revolver (made by Taurus). It lasted part of a range trip. 15 shots in, and it was broken. Bought new, returned it for a full refund.

I have a Taurus 94 (.22LR) a plinker; no problems at all. I have a Rossi .357 snub I bought new in 1997 that locked up tight after 2 cylinders of .357. I took it back to the dealer and in a month it was back and it has not given me any trouble since. I won't carry it however, it is a range gun. I just ordered a Taurus 85 SS from Buds and I hope it is a good one. I have several Smiths some with and some without the lock. I will let you know how the 85 works out. I had to send my Glock27 in for service as I was getting failures to feed. I bought it new in 2001 never had a problem.I was not limpwristing. I replaced the magazines and the recoil spring assembly and I still experienced FTF. I will let you know what Glock does to repair my 27.

I have a PT-138 that is garbage. The front site came off on the first magazine. Installing it back in I noticed that the rear site blade was installed backwards (something I should have noticed but then again, so should have Taurus). It's the worse shooting handgun I've ever seen and seems to be getting worse with every trip. I want to like it and keep shooting it but it's accuracy, or lack there of, is now beyone minute of pie plate at 10 yards. That's rested, not off-hand.

I also acquired a Rossi .357 snubbie given to me by a lady who's doctor advised she not own weapons (medication). She handed it to me in pieces and said it fell apart on her first trip to the range. She handed me 3 boxes of ammo, 1 partial box of .38 special and 2 full boxes of .357 magnum, so she was shooting .38 out of it when it fell apart.

I was able to get it back together once the parts were ordered but even with blue loctite every range trip is the same. Shoot 3 or 4 cylinders full then break out the screwdriver and tighten all the screws. Rinse. Repeat.

Like I said before, it now eats a steady diet of .357 and loctite. In it's defence, it's trigger is unbelievable and it's accuracy is amazing. I can't come up with anything to defend the PT-138.

Will I ever own another Taurus? Not in a million years.

There are three things I always see on these boards. 1. Problems that come from poor to non-existant QC. 2. Nightmares of dealing with Taurus support. I read a post on the 1911 forum of a guy that took a year to get his magazine replaced through them. 3. People that never have a problem with them.

1 and 2 override 3 in my opinion.

After re reading all the good/bad commits on TAURUS.
There is a strange pattern.:scrutiny:

You either have one that works right out the box or you don't.

Seems there is no in between.
Makes no sense to me on this type of hit or miss item.:what:

IM SOOOOO GLAD ALL MY TAURUS GUNS ARE THE WORKING ONES.:)

Good luck to the ones out there that have the BAD ones.
im sure my time will come when i get a bad gun,

OH waite i did,

it was a CHARTER PATHFINDER 22MAG.:cuss::what:

It shot key holes at 20 feet right out the box. It also has a life time warranty but I have to send it back on my dime.:fire:
guess well see how this play out.

i do have an older charter 44 bulldog it is has been great.

I have a Taurus stainless .44 mag, 4", not sure of the model number. I've had it for about 10 years and shoot the heck out of it with some stout reloads. Still locks up very tight, shoots very nicely, very nice DA trigger. No complaints.

I like the older PT-92's built in Brazil on Beretta machinery. These were bought new in 1988 and have the 1911-style thumb safety for cocked-and-locked carry.

I own the following Taurus models; Ultra-Lite Titanium 44 Mag., PT 1911 .45 ACP, PT 92 AF 9mm. I am very pleased with the the semi - autos, The 44 mag has had a few minor problems. I would rate the quality of the revolvers a bit below my S&W and Rugers. But overall decent weapons for the dollars spent.

I'm on my second 85SSUL in .38 SPL (I sold the first in a fit of stupidity.) and couldn't be more pleased. It is my second primary carry gun. (Weak side when I'm carrying my S&W M13; strong side when I'm not.) I saw a 3 inch 85 (all stainless) at the latest gun show, but didn't get it because I was looking for an 1895 Nagant (found it!). Hope I see another one when I have disposable money.

PS. My brother carries his Taurus PT111 when his clothing won't conceal his Kimber Pro-Carry!

I've owned/own:
PT1911 - Has never had one failure , accurate as all hell , is now my favorite 1911
PT99AF - I bought while i lived in Germany in 87 , always has worked
669 - My first 357 Mag revolver , fit , finish were great , I bought at the same time I bought the PT99AF
669CP - my second 357 mag revolver but this one is stainless and ported . Shoots same as the other one , lockup is not as tight or crisp as my S&W 19-3 Combat Magnum but for half the cost I'm not dissapointed at all.
85CH - I bought this as a summer pocket gun , a nice lil 38 snub , I just old this to a friend who needed a small gun for work .
Of the 5 I still have the PT1911 The others have been sold to fund my S&W buying .=, not because something was wrong with them .

My local dealer managed to acquire the very first PT-1911 to arrive in Lubbock Texas. I'm usually not the one to have to have a "first" gun. but 5 minutes after handling that PT-1911, I hadda have it!

The 1 & only load I've put through it is 5.4 of Herco & my home-cast 200 grain SWC, a LEE mold, a bevel base copy of the H&G # 68 bullet. Brinell hardness of 30.

Has functioned first time, every time. Love it so much, I also bought a stainless PT-1911 version when they came available. Same load, also 100% fuctioning.

Both very accurate.

I have a 44 mag tracker as a hunting sidearm. While I do recommend replacing that idiotic "ribber" grip it comes with, the gun is great! Quite accurate, light for packing, packs a big punch, and rides unobtrusively on the hip when hiding in the grasses on the edge of a clearcut.

The two things one would need to know:
1) Replace that grip with a Hogue.
2) Nobody makes holsters for the Tracker, but a holster with an open muzzle built of a S&W K-frame fits perfectly.

I've owned three Taurus revolvers over the years. They all three worked just fine. I've traded them all off for one reason or another, but never because I didn't like the guns. I just saw something I liked more.

Actually I'd like to have all three of them back.

My experience w/ Taurus was NOT GOOD!!!

The gun broke, so I called Customer no-service. Their lack of professionalism, etc sealed the Co's fate for me.

Many, many weeks later, I finally got the right part.

I won't deal with them again after this less-than-stellar experience.

I really hope (for you Taurus buyers) that Taurus has revamped their QC and Customer Service.

I just read a post by a Taurus owner who had an excellent experience with their customer service - got the right part in less than 2 weeks.

I own 12 Taurus pistols and revolvers. Some are the older, non-decocker models of the pistols, and are over 25 years old. No problems to this day.

If you'll check out those threads, you'll find that many, many are about "a friend's gun", or "something I was told about". Seems the most noisesome bashers have never owned, or shot, any of the guns that they denigrate.

With others, their stories have "improved" as they moved from forum to forum, learning from their efforts as they carry them around.

I've used their CS once, on a matter that was entirely my fault. It was impressive. Too many of us today have the "gotta' have it now" attitude, and, if our posting is any indication of communications skills, they possess enough attitude for a dozen people.

I also wonder how anyone with eyes could actually buy the guns that they complain about. Don't they actually look at them? I check all of my purchases carefully before paying for them. Sometimes, that goes as far as to field-strip them if I need to see something. I WON'T but a poorly finished gun, nor will I buy one with buggered side plates. Why would I miss a canted barrel, or bad sights? You look at a new car carefully before buying it, why not a gun?

JR:
Personally, there's enough evidence to keep me from purchasing
anything else from Taurus until the QC and CS and parts availability improve.

I tried to like my Taurus purchases, I just do not have confidence
in their polymer pistols anymore.
My 24/7 developed an issue after a couple hundred rounds that rendered
it unreliable. This problem is well documented by countless other 24/7 owners.
I can deal with mechanical failures.
The lack of parts availability is something I, personally, can't accept,
and the lack of customer service concern that I received from Taurus
made the matter even worse.

As far as "gotta have it right now":
I waited 10 weeks for a spring and still didn't get it.
This was after they told me it was in stock.
That's not good enough, not when there are a multitude of other
manufacturers that can do better.
I can't imagine any other manufacturer (of any mass produced product)
getting away with this.

I don't have the funds to "collect" firearms, so when/if one of mine
needs work, it needs to be completed ASAP.
Parking a handgun in the safe for 2.5 months while
waiting forever on a part is not acceptable.
