i want to try filling my cases (on reduced loads). i have never done this before, but i am going to a fabric store tomorrow anyway, so i thought i would buy some and try it. but i cant remember what the name of the stuff is. it seems like it is some kind of poly filling for pillows, or something like that. i want to buy the right stuff, and the book i read it in is from the library, so i dont have it now. help please! thanks.

Do you mean something like this stuff? I've no experience using any type of case filler other than gun powder.

I've been using styrofoam in .38,.357,.44, .44 mag, and .45LC for years. Don't pack it, just fill up to the level of bottom of bullet. The ceiling tiles work best. Cotton balls work too but they need to be cut in half.

Dacron and kapok have been used for fillers. Kapok being the best one to test with. There is always a danger of doing damage to the barrel when using fillers. If some of the filler stays in the barrel on firing the next shot, you could end up with a ring in the barrel. Do a simple test, load 10 with filler, 10 no filler, see if there is a difference. I think you will find that the filler does nothing for you. I saw no difference in loading light loads in 30-30 3006 with cast bullets. Much easer to just tilt the muzzle up to move the powder to the back of the case than use a filler.

wow, has anyone tried the pufflon stuff? i am always scepticle about new things, but it appears that it has been around for a while. and i do remember now reading about it a while ago, as far as using something to smooth out the bore of my rifles, IF i was to use something, i think i would use the bullets that are specifically designed to do this from David Tubbs.

Lyman #47 has this to say regarding wads in the 45-70:
WADS: 100% Polyester fiber wads in the form of 1/4" thick batting were used in conjunction with some cast bullet loads..."

When I use 2400 to make reduced loads for my .458 Win I put 1/2 a cottonball into each case.

Yes, Dacron -- and the various look-alikes -- is commonly used as a filler. And yes, it is possible to damage your gun with it, but there is a lot of of BS floating around on the topic.
The bottom line is that as long as you use enough of it -- which means enough to fill any air space on top of the powder charge, and to hold that charge into place -- you should be in good shape.

I used the synthetic fillers and had a devil of a time cleaning the melted filler out of the barrel.
Grits works well with a card or something to keep the filler seperate from the powder. I've heard of cream of wheat also. These fillers smell like burning cornbread after each shot but work fine.
YMMV
