Anyone have any experience with IMR 4759. I'm thinking of making a reduced load in my .308 win and .300 win mag. I'm thinking it would be cheaper because of less powder used and more importantly less barrel wear on the .300. Less recoil and probably less cleaning too. At least that is what I'm hoping. Anyone have any experience with this powder? Kind of curious because you never hear much about it and many stores don't carry it. Kind of wondering if there's something I don't know about it.

Of course, I could also practice with my .22, but that's less fun. Besides it gives me an excuse to work up a new load!

Works fine. That is what it was made for. I have used it in .44 Mag before, and it works OK, but it won't outdo AA #9. I even loaded some real stout .44 Spl loads with it. It did OK, but they were over Max pressure I am sure.

My first father-in-law had a series of heart, back and arm problems, so I got him a Remington 600 and made him a lot of .308 125gr handloads using SR4759. It worked very well for him.

i use IMR SR4759 for reduced loads in my 300 win mag. it works well. HOWEVER, i must warn you to be VERY CAREFULL about how much you put in. i nearly blew up my remington 700 doing this. my scale was sticking, and i did not know it, resulting in several overcharges of powder. when i touched one of them off, i knew right then (before i even tried to open the bolt) that something was wrong. this powder can easily be overloaded, and just looking down the case at the level isnt going to tell you the story. a reduced load in one of these is only around 1/2 full, and a little extra can be disasterous. i still use it, and still in my 300 win mag for reduced loads. but i am very cautios about it. just pay extra attention to what you are doing, and you will be fine. also, pay very close attention to the printing in your reloading books as well. in my speer book, they have a series of reduced loads, and most of them use SR4759, but then it switches to IMR4198. if you dont catch this, you are going to be in a BAD place.

Fired my first shots with 4759 today. I think I found my new practice load in my .300. The recoil was literally the same as my AR!!

One of the big reasons that I wanted a reduced load was barrel life. I believe I was told the cost of replacing the barrel on my Montana was $350! With the short life of a .300 I'm probably spending more money on the barrel each shot that I am on the bullet. Not to mention the barrel heats up so fast you can only fire 1 or two shots. With the new load I can double that. It's not that the recoil bothers me with full loads as I shot 500 rounds throught this gun last year, but I figure why waste money with full loads when I'm just trying to stay proficient with the gun in the off season.

Anyways, any estimates as to how much longer barrel life would be with a middle of the road load of 4357 and 147 grain bullets at roughy 2000 fps. I would imagine that a load like this wouldn't burn out a barrel much faster than a 30-30.

just remember to start working your loads back up to full pressure loads about 3 weeks before hunting season.

I have used 13 grs. of 4759 pushing a 168 gr. cast bullet for small game in my 30-06 for years-a great load.

Its one of my favorite powders. I use it for reduced cast bullet loads in my Krag, .45-70, .30-06 and Enfield (.303).

I'm a big fan of it as well. GREAT in the 45-70, perhaps my favorite powder for it. Another benefit is that it burns very clean compared to other powders commonly used for reduced loads.

I've used it for 30-30 and 45 colt. Both showed promising accuracy and impressive velocity for the amount of powder in the case. May have to try Floydster's load in the 30-06.
