if you were only allowed 1 rifle and 1 pistol what would they be?

what if the law only allowed for 1 of each, i would probably go with an AR15 with a couple different uppers but for a pistol i would have a hard decision. it would have to be some kind of high cap.

I think something in the M-14 platform for the rifle, and something in the 1911 platform for the pistol.

With those in hand, and enough like-minded folks, and we'll go take care of this "allowed" thing that has somehow come to pass.

Probably a stainless bolt action .30 '06 with a scope and synthetic furniture and a stainless mid-size double action .357.
For most rifle uses, as much as we all hate to admit it, a regular "hunting rifle" will do OK.
And if I can only have one handgun it's going to have to be able to do a lot of things fairly well, the .357.

And I admit that right now, I own neither of those.

Really, rather than worrying about some law, I'm kind of likely to impose these limits on myself.
I'm becoming kind of a minimalist - just don't see any reason to have a huge stack of guns around anymore and I get more enjoyment out of a few that I really like anyhow. I'll never get down to one of each but I can see myself getting down to maybe three of each and a couple rimfires.
Your mileage may vary.

Accurate bolt rifle in .30-06 or if obtaining ammo a problem, accurate semi auto in military caliber.

Much as I love the 1911 in .45 ACP persuasion, I'd rather go with an accurate 6" DA revolver in .357/38. A man's gotta be practical.

If ammo for the sidearm is a problem, an accurate .22 autoloader.

If only one gun allowed, a pump shotgun in 12 gauge with interchangeable barrels --one of which would be a rifled, iron-sighted slug barrel.

In every case, to me, accuracy is paramount.

2. A 1911 with multiple uppers, 22cal, 9mm, 38 super, 45acp. Does anyone make a 40 cal upper for a 1911:D

If I was limited to just 2 of the ones I currently have, it would have to be my stainless CZ75b 9mm and my M1 carbine.

I'd choose the CZ because I know I can hit with it and have taken several training courses with it. It fits, it hits, so if I'm to be reduced to a one-and-only it gets the nod. Also it has had a very sweet action job and I just don't have a sweeter pistol in my fun-box.

It was a tough call between the carbine and the Garand, but the carbine is what I currently have the most ammo for, as well as being set up to reload. Also I forsee most of the shooting I would NEED to do as being at suburban neighborhood distances. Hopefully within the next year or so that choice will have changed to an x39-upper AR (featureless build), because I'm sitting on 5k of x39 I got back when it was $99 per k, intended to feed the stable of Yugo SKS's we have. Already got the ten 10 round mags for it (yeah CA restrictions suck). Also hope to have a 5.56 upper for the same lower if that's not cheating (probably is though...). Either of these would upgrade from the carbine for penetration purposes.

Wow, I can't believe nobody thought of this...a GE M134, ya know? the .308 sized 'mini' gun, and a Glock 18 suppressed. Why not go all out 'Action Movie' mode?

Assuming we had this hypothetical tyranny, and to be more smart with my choices instead of picking the funnest, I'd actually go with a Cobb MCR (Multi Caliber Rifle) for the rifle. Not only can the barrel and upper receiver be swapped out for all the AR-15 length calibers, the magazine well is a modular section. I'll start with having it in 9mm, 5.56, .308, .30-06something in the 338-416 range, and .50 BMG. For the pistol, the best handgun I ever fired was my dad's Sig 226, assuming I can't get anything NFA restricted, which is how it is in my state already.

It really depends. For a SHTF situation, probably a Sig 556 or a SCAR Heavy and a Sig 220 or a Witness Full Size .45acp or 10mm with a 9mm conversion kit. For a survival situation, a CETME and the same Witness set up.
However, a .223/5.56x45 of some sort (Sig 556 or a Ruger mini-14) and a 7.62x39 (Ruger mini-30 or AK) along with a good 9mm pistol such as a Ruger P95, TZ99, Beretta or Taurus 92 and a good 12ga pump hidden in the woods somewhere.

First you need to understand what my intrepretation of the SHTF is...

SHTF = Kaos to the point that extreme self-defensive actions are required. No calvary is on the way to save us, our life expectancy is in serious doubt, civil services are just about nonexistant, no food, water, or utilities are available, and things might remain in kaos for quite some time.

Choices?
Pistol = S&W or Colt mid-frame .357 Mag w/ 6" barrel
Rifle = .308 pump (Remington) w/ 2x7 wide angle scope

Reasons?

Both pistol and rifle need to be accurate, fully reliable, and easy to use. For defensive purposes I'll want to take out threats while they are still as distant as possible. Both weapons in the configurations described will do that.

Both weapons might also be needed for hunting (so I can feed myself and group when there's no other alternative but to hunt ). Both calibers are widely available in a variety of loads to cover everything from SD to small/large game hunting. (Although I'd really like someting a bit more robust than .308 if I need to take on a bear, I could if given the right load. Because of its combination of wide availability of military/hunting ammo, inherant accuracy, and easy of handling, it has to be .308).

Why a pump and revolver? They're simple, reliable, and if I'm taken out those remaining in my group will have no problem picking them up and figuring out how to use them. Ever seen anybody who didn't know (almost instinctively) how to use a revolver or pump? -- Maybe its in our DNA or something??

BTW, the question was rifle and handgun. Had it not been rifle, I would have selected a Remington 12Ga Shotgun (870 Wingmaster w/ mid length barrel).

December 19, 2008, 01:43 AM
The correct answer:

I'd pick whatever is the most popular for ammo compatibility. It might come in handy when we all go to solve the problem of only being able to own two guns. :)

If I could only afford to own one rifle and one pistol, I'd pick a CZ 452 American in .22LR and a 3" S&W Model 60.

first, i would buy a whole lot of large PVC pipe and some good shovels...paid in cash, of course.

after that, the only guns i would keep in the house would be (after some hemming and hawing):

- S&W .357 with 4" bbl, probably a 686
- Remington 870 with a couple different barrels

i think those would be my most versatile and reliable choices, though i would sorely miss having a semi-auto rifle.

Well, since YOU won't let me have a shotgun (either m590A1 or police 870 would have made me happy)...

M1 Garand and S&W 686 (7rnd, 3")

Why the Garand? Well, it's a hunting round for most anything I would want to eat, and it's an almost guaranteed man-killer, IN A TRIED & TRUE SEMI-AUTO BATTLE RIFLE! BOO-YAH!!!

As for the S&W 686... I love having a wheel gun in .357 since I can hunt small stuff with .38, bigger stuff with .357, and the chances of scrounging ammo goes way up when it's not a current military or LEO round. That, & a properly tuned tack-driving 686, with 7 rounds of top-notch .357 & a bunch of speed loaders, with a 3" barrel for at least some concealed carry if necessary...

Hey, if there is a better Jack-of-all-trades pistol, I'd like to see it.... and steal it from you!

However, my next dynamic duo would be the AK47 and my Glock 30SF (w/ a myriad of different length mags)

Only two guns, you say? That's not easy. My first choice, a Winchester model 1890 in .22 WRF. In my youth I took plenty of small game with this rifle. Now a companion for more than 50 years it embodies too many memories to part with.

A handgun choice is considerably more difficult. I was brought up on Saturday afternoon Westerns at the town theater so naturally a wheel gun was what I first lusted after, at least until that girl in the sixth grade with pig tails turned my head. :)
My choice these days is torn between the Ruger Single Six and the .44 Blackhawk, subject to change on any particular day.

Before I moved out of California I took all but two weapons to my brother in law in Arizona I kept a 357 winchester trapper with 16" barrel and a 65-5 S&W in 357 stainless. I bought six boxes of 357, and 38 spl in various bullet weights to look good. A Lee loader along with powder, bullets and brass was my real main back up. I made an unbelieveable buy of armscor 357 in 1982 and moved 5 thousand round cases to my brother in law. Now buffalo bore is making a 357 at right around 30-30 capabilities for my rifle. I retired and moved to Az. I have other firearms, but those two would still be my first choice. It's a bonus they are so much fun to shoot and reload. 1911 colt, all steel, single stack mag, commander barrel length.
HK G3 carbine, telescopic buttstock.

For me, the 1911 pistol would be a Dan Wesson Bobtail and the HK G3-ish rifle would be a PTR 91 with rails as well as a telescoping buttstock (KFM4). And a better scope than the one that's one it now.

Btw, from my reading of the forums, I'd guess it'll be wives or budgets that restrict us to two weapons, not the ATF.

All the hysteria about an imminent ban is just driving up the prices.

It's not that I don't appreciate seeing some part of our economy doing well, but I had kind of been thinking about an FN FAL, just to see how it compared to the PTR 91. And now I'm going to have wait for y'all to calm down and sell me a used one after the panic bubble deflates.

I'd like to change my vote.

I'll stay with the PTR-91, with a tactical scope on a claw mount and a bi-pod, it's the the most versatile rifle I've got. Low-power (2x - 6x) magnification when you can use them. Iron sights when you need them. A steady platform from which to fire. And a round that, when well-placed, will handle most jobs.

But for the pistol, I want to switch out from the 1911 Bobtail to an H&K USP Compact .45.

Reasoning: If we assume some kind of SHTF scenario is imminent (think Bielski Otriad or Terminator, Post Skynet) in this hypothetical, I'm not thinking I'd want to try to care for the match grade barrel in the Bobtail while living in a dugout in the woods indefinitely.

Shoots beautifully, but it is a task to get it really clean.

And, honestly, I've never had a firearm that was easier to maintain than the USP. Four or five passes with a bore snake and that polygonal profile barrel is bright and shiny.

So, to paraphrase Lyle Lovett: I understand too little too late; I realize there are things you say and do that you can never take back. But what would you be if you didn't even try? You have to try. So after a lot of thought, I'd like to reconsider. Please, If it's not too late, make that a PTR-91 .308 and an H&K USP Compact .45.

And, yes, I still own both.

Agreed. That and it throws them quite a ways, which makes policing your brass all the more frustrating: Have to look far and wide to clean up after yourself and the retrieved casings are useless.
But also agreed. It's sweet.

Rifle - I would go with a .308 AR from one of the more reputable companies.

Pistol - No idea, pistols are fun, but I'm not knowledgable on them, and don't really pretend to be. I will say though, that the effects of 9mm (fmj only) on humans has not impressed me much.

If the question was changed a bit to two firearms, I would say that you can do about anything with a 22LR and a 12 guage, from deer to rabbits to squirrels to guys in your house that you didn't invite.

You didn't specify # of barrels; I'll take a T/C Encore w/ barrels in 30.06, 20 guage, .22lr. The heater will be a 6" 686 .357.

Only one of each?

What a nightmare! :uhoh:

Well, anyway...

My rifle would be a bolt action 30-06, probably a Remington, Ruger, or Weatherby.

The pistol would be a S&W .357 k-frame, probably a Model 65 with a 4" barrel.

I would have to say:

Rifle---------Hungarian SA-85m 7.62x39mm

Handgun----------Taurus Model 608 .357Mag. with 8.38" barrel

Plus all the others they don't know about buried in a special Humidity controlled vault in the back yard. (lol)

Hmmm,

Rifle: VEPR I in .308, 4x fixed russian scope. AK reliability and better than bolt sporter accuracy.

Handgun: Springfield 1911a1 Mil-Spec. 2.5" at 25 yards, and none of the three have ever so much as hiccupped.

Currently own everything mentioned? Yup!

Regards,
:)

Saiga 308 v21, 223, 7.62x.39 and the glock 35.Ruger security 6,Taurus 410, Why, because I can outfit eight men (afordably) and that's the only way to hold ground. One man and two guns aint enough in south Texas. Zombies are everywhere!

This would be my rifle.

Nah, too much tech.

Probably a pump shotgun for versatility.

And my Glock 22. (With extra slide for 22LR and barrel for 9mm and .357Sig conversion too...)

Neither is fancy, but both will work long after i'm gone to dust.

From my own personal collection, I would take my PSL-54C and the BHP.

My other choice would be a Full-on M1A and a BHP. :)
