I posted this earlier in the Revolver section, but I guess I should have posted it here. So, here goes.

I picked up a Colt DS, vintage 1974-1975, around the first of the year but never got around to shooting it. I pulled the gun out today to clean it up a bit and wipe it down and decided to put some Snap Caps in it to get a feel for it as I have been toying with the idea of carrying it on occaision. Well, when I pull the trigger it is real slow to reset.

Any ideas on what I need to check and how to go about checking it. Keep in mind that I'm not a gun smith. On the other hand I'm not a complete idiot either. (Okay, maybe a little closer to one than the other, but I'm not saying which one.)

It may just be old grease and gunk that is preventing the trigger from resetting.

I would suggest you use an aerosol cleaner like Gunscubber or even carburetor cleaner to spray out the lock work. Remove the grips first, then spray it out. You can do this without removing the side plate. Let it dry and then oil the action.

That may not be it, but it's a good thing to try first.

Does it not reset at all or does it just feel slow as compared to a Smith & Wesson?

The rebound lever operating on a cam surface powered by the lower leg of the Colt V mainspring is never going to give as fast and crisp a trigger return as the S&W's rebound spring or the Ruger's direct acting trigger spring.

No, it resets, it's just real slow. Seems like one second or so to reset.

Well, then hope that a good cleaning will restore operation. Or at most a new mainspring to replace a "raftered" one as in your other thread on the subject.
