S&W 57-1, 6 inch .41 Mag

I must be on a .41 Mag jag again This one showed up at a local dealers and was in an easy 98% condition.

No box, etc...But given the condition, and the fact that they just don't seem to turn up much anymore....well ~ you know the rest of the story...

Want to swap it for a beautiful S&W 1006 I have?

Very nice, Gizamo! I saw a 4" 58 at the local Cabela's and had a very difficult time leaving it there.

That looks like a good deal - if you have it rebarreled to .44 Magnum and the cylinder rechambered... :neener:

Very pretty. One day I hope to find a nice .41. They don't show up at all around here.

Nice looking .41.

You and I must be on about the same wave length. S&W .41 mags, Sharp's rifles, and Smooth bore flinters. :)

Very nice, giz. I dream of a 5 inch 57 and 5 inch 29 to go with my 5 inch 27, but it will never happen. I'd be beaten by the S&W for carrying an original 5 inch 29.

vanilla gorilla,

What about that 5" Model 28...
Someday I'll tell you how I missed one ~ twice......

giz, I'm currently in the process of trying to track down one of the 5 inch nickeled FHP 28s. Everytime I think I'm close, it turns out somebody else has it, though.

Way off topic: A coworker retired as a FHP trooper about 6 years ago. When the entire patrol went to autos, he was given the oppurtunity to purchase his nickeled Python for "only" 600 bucks. The nickeled 5 inch 27s were about the same price then, too.

VG,

Same story here, and the last price was just shy of 3 grand... Just so you know...

Throw the Blue Book and every other reference out. Your entering RM territory on that lowly HP....

Congratulations on a beautiful old S&W~! IMHO, the .41 magnum was
the ideal caliber; not only for law enforcement types, but as a hunting
handgun as well. My first magnum revolver was a 4" blued model 57
that I bought for $175 brand NIB, back in 1971. I was look'in for a
model 29 at the time; but found the 57 instead, complete in UNFIRED
condition in the wooden presentation case with accessories and
all documents. Later, after a few year's of use I traded the M-57
for a used, factory nickel 4" model 29. Even today, I don't know
why I made the trade cuz the M-57 was the first weapon I ever
handloaded for~! :banghead:  Enjoy your beautiful new toy~! :D

GREAT FIND GIZ! I'm a big fan of the 41. I'd like to find a 6" like yours to go with my 4" 57 and my 58.

Brings back memories of how I got started down this primrose (wheelgun) path - dug out my 57-nodash, 57-1 and 57-3 just to say 'Hi' and decide which one is going to the range tomorrow.

The "nodash" and "-3" are 4", the "-1" a 6". I think the "-3" is the nicest although it's the only one with non-original stocks and the "nodash" was a rocky early relationship until the timing got fixed.

But they got me started in reloading and taught me that Fuff and Dfariswheel are better than a library. Ah, memories.

I'm still hunting an earlier model 29 with no conspicuous success but the quest goes on. Hence, I was pleased to learn that the .44 was history - thanks, Giz.

Very nice gun, gizamo. Congrats.

I've taken a fondness to the .41 mag lately and recently picked up my latest one--a 57 no dash but with an 8 3/8" barrel. Gawd, they are sure pretty...

Remember, with N-frame-itis....there is no cure.

I got my Model 57 w/4" barrel back in 2006. I am seriously going to bag a deer with it behind the house this upcoming season. I need to start reloading!

I need to start reloading!

You ain't whistlin' Dixie there.

There's something about the .41 Mag that sells reloading setups. There's plenty of help in THR's reloading forum if one stays clear of the color wars - those guys are crankier than the caliber war tribal warriors. They make the "semi vs revolver" folks look like dispute resolution specialists on Prozak by comparison.

Q: How can you tell a new 57 owner?
A: He's the guy that starts with Starline brass 'cuz he didn't have factory ammo.

Nice gun. I'd like to pick up a 6" M-57 myself.
