Problem w/ Remington 725

Hi all, looking for some help here. I took a Remington 725, which I recently inherited from my Grandfather, to the range today. All was going well as I shot from the bench, single loading. I then switched to sitting, and loaded a full magazine and commenced to fire. What happened next has me concerned - I pressed the trigger with the safety on, and nothing happened; but when I thumbed the safety off (finger OFF the trigger), it fired. I extracted the casing, and emptied the magazine through the floorplate. Then, on an empty chamber, I repeated the process several times, and each time the result was the same, it (dry) fired.

My understanding, from reading de Haas 'Bolt Action Rifles' (not sure what edition, but oldish), is that the 725 is the predecessor of, and essentially identical to, the Rem. 700.

So- those of you familiar with the 725/700 action - What happened here?! I'm assuming that that this isn't supposed to happen this way. I understand that the 725/700 trigger is adjustable...is it just out of adjustment, or is something wrong? Or, is this a flaw common to the design? Is this flaw the difference between the 725 and the 700, maybe?

Any help at all would be appreciated - Thanks in advance.

Mac

It sounds like someone in the past tried to "adjust" the trigger. When adjusting a model 700 trigger one of the checks you do is put on the safety (without a round in the chamber) and pull the trigger, then flick off the safety and see if it fires. The other problem could be interference between the wood stock and the safety/trigger assembly.

Most factory Remington triggers get flakey when adjusted to less than 3 lbs.

Even in the absence of a trigger adjustment, some of these 721/722/725 models had this happen. It happened to me years ago hunting with a borrowed 722 257. I don't have a solution for you, as I just returned the faulty rifle to its owner, with a word of warning.

Thanks waynzwld, it's fixed! I didn't think that my Grandfather would have had it adjusted, he wasn't really the type. I did go back however, and test for the malfunction with the action out of the stock, and lo and behold, no problem!

So, I watched carefully as I tightened the action screws, and the stock was bumping the safety on the last few turns. Much as I hated to do it, I broke out the dremel, and sanded a bit on the stock, where it's relieved for the safety. Voila! No more problem! The stock was binding the safety, who'da thunk it?

Anyway, I'm unbelievably happy/relieved that it was such a simple solution, and again, thanks, I never would have thought of that on my own.
