Is there such thing as Sig syndrome
Black92LX

I think i may have it.
It all started the day before my brothers wedding. We went to the range to rent an semiauto handgun, and all they had available in 9mm was a Sig P226.
now i had shot numerous other semiauto's in 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45ACP. they all felt good except two. and i shall name no names.
but this sig felt remarkable, like it was made personaly for my hand or something. if i was 21 i would have bought right there and then. so when i was at the gun shop i picked up the new sig saur brochure and while reading through it for the 3rd time. i noticed a page starting to fold out. and to my surprise a nice poster of the whole sig handgun family amidst the great american flag. so i quickly hung it in fron of my desk. and now i can't wait till april 5th till i can buy one. and find myself constantly wondering if all the other sigs feel as wonderful as the 226. and since i have shot all the 9mm contenders on my list, i find myself wondering should i even worry about trying out the:
HK USP 9
Springfield XD 9
FN FortyNine

I would try the others to make sure they don't fit your hand better. You're not alone. The P226s fits many people like a glove.:D

Try them all, but frankly the Sig P226 actually works as well as everyone claims the 1911 does.
I always say, Sig gives you target grade accuracy in a combat grade gun.
If you like it, it's a terrific purchase.

I love all sigs, but if you want a comfortable handgun IMO the 225 is hard to beat, the first time I held and shot one I just knew this was the one, who cares if it only holds 8 rounds, it's the one that gave me "sig syndrome". ;) .......tom

Within 6 months of purchasing my first sig, I had three....and now many more.
One glock, and I sold my beretta.
One H&K (Not selling it, ever.)
One S&W auto, and I sold it!
2 CZs, still have 'em.
Many S&W wheels, and ruger wheels, even a couple dan wessons and a star PD.
Tried many others, but for me, SIGs are a sure thing, why mess with anything else?

Greeting's All-
Black92LX, I've had the SIG syndrome since 1988;
when I purchased my NIB SIG .45 caliber P220.:) To me,
the American grip angle of the P220 and the 9m/m
P228 feels far better than the European grip angle
of the P226.:uhoh: But, that is just me; cuz all SIG-Sauer
(SIGARMS) "classic P-series" pistols are just great!:D

While I would agree that there are many "fine" combat grade 9mm available, only a scant few will come close to what you will get from a SIG. I too started my love-affair with the SIG family some years age with a two-tone P226 in 9mm... as far as I can tell, there is not a single gun that will hold a candle to this fine piece of german engineering.
I would say that in the right hands a SIG P226 is capable of combat grade accuracy, and then some...maybe just shy of match grade. In any case, if it comes down to my choosing either a SIG or Beretta...Its SIG all day long and twice on Sunday. Sure the Glock is cheaper...tupperware is always cheaper than Pyrex. Glocks are probably the hardiest guns around, but I'm not running around in the woods playing Rambo, nor am I swimming in the deep blue sea with my sidearm, nor am I dropping my handguns from 100 ft. For those who do those things and enjoys a weapon with the ergonomic design of an ancient egyptian brick, you can have the Glock that I passed up for a new SIG. The only weakness the SIGs may have is in the area of the finish. Robbie Robar can solve that problem with ease if necessary.
The only tough call I face each day is whether I walk out the door with the 226 or the 225... you can understand that?
I love Berettas and Glocks as much as the next guy... as long as its the next guy who owns one. ;)
Happy shooting!

I've got HK syndrome
I have that when it comes too long guns:rolleyes: If the AWB sunsets thinking of taking out a $10,000 loan:what:
why aren't you checking out the Beretta 92FS and the Glock 17
those were the two that i said i would mention no names in my original post. The Beretta was just too small for my hand to be comfortable while just holding it. i thought the action felt great comparable with the sig. it just didn''t fit in my hand well. And the glock well it was the opposite of the baretta it felt great just holding it but didn't like the action at. (no flames required i know they are great guns they just don't fit me)
to what kind of vehicle does your name refer to black92lx
That would be a 92 ford mustang

Flyer;
Please take no offense to my comments on your comments;
The P-226 is a fine handgun, and you'd never regret it's purchase.
Agree (although never is a long time)
If you're looking at the BEST full-sized combat pistols, why aren't you checking out the Beretta 92FS and the Glock 17?
When you say "best combat pistols", why do you limit yourself to 9mm? if you'r talking about "best" 9mms, I personally would rather have a Sig P210 or a Smith & Wesson 952, but the "best combat pistol" might be .45ACP or 10mm
Either of these (92FS and the Glock 17) are as reliable as the Sig,[QUOTE]
Maybe
[QUOTE] the Glock probably more so. [QUOTE]
Doubt it
[QUOTE]And the Beretta will be as or more accurate (than the P226) [QUOTE]
Any marginal difference in accuracy would depend on the shooter and the ammo used
[QUOTE] It may even fit your hand better (though the trigger reach is pretty long)
Depends how big your hand is; my shooting buddy has a 92FS, and we shoot it alongside my own Sig P228, which is the compact version of the P226. The gripsize of my P228 is only marginally smaller than the P226. I think the handfit of the P228 is a little better, and the trigger is a just a little smoother, than the 92FS, but this is "MHO", and "YMMV". BTW, the Beretta Vertec fits my hand better than the MilSpec Beretta
[QUOTE]This is just me speaking, so it's just an opinion, but based on handling ALL the other guns you listed as possible Sig substitutes, I consider them toys in comparison[QUOTE]
not toys, not necessarily better or worse, but definitely different.
[QUOTE]The Sig, Beretta, and Glock are the three best 9mm combat handguns on the market.[QUOTE]
I'd add HK, Smith & Wesson, BHP, CZ, and Walther to your list.
[QUOTE]The Glock is the least expensive and most reliable.[QUOTE]
If the Glock works for you, great; I liked the Glock 19 that I shot , but I would pass on the other Glocks I tried. Reliability depends on the ammo you're using, and the general condition and maintenance of the gun. A poorly-maintained Glock is probably more likely to go "bang" than a poorly maintained Sig, but any poorly maintained gun will go "click" eventually.
[QUOTE]The Beretta is the best built, probably most accurate, and pre-ban mags are easier to find.[QUOTE]
The Beretta is WELL built; I would argue that it is built better than the Sig, accuracy depends on the shooter and the ammo, and if pre-ban mags are a high priority, check out a Smith & Wesson 5906
[QUOTE]The Sig is very accurate as well...on a even keel with the Beretta on most every feature.
At least TRY the others before making up your mind..[QUOTE]

September 2, 2003, 06:20 PM
I just recently bought a p239 for CCW and think it's the best thing since slice bread. It is a very accurate little gun and easy to hold and shoot. I had mentioned on the Sig forum that I traded my Ruger P89 in on the sig and someone there told me that Ruger makes the slides for Sigarms. Anybody else ever hear this? I don't doubt it; Ruger makes some prett sturdy handguns.

The SIG P228, fielded by the U.S. military as the M11, has the unusual distinction of having passed the Ordinance tests (3 pistols, 5,000 rounds each) with zero malfunctions. Cosmetic scratches only matter to civilians.

Hmmmmmmmmmm, well, if I could get standard mags, and If you're looking at the BEST full-sized combat pistols, , then I'd get a Hi Power :)... If not, then I guess I'd be happy with a P228 :neener: .... Well, a G17L with +2 floorplates on standard 17 round mags full of +P+ ammo would work ;).......
Actually, any of these would do fine, I just prefer my Hi Power, with a good supply of 13 & 20 round mags of course.........

September 3, 2003, 08:15 PM
Greeting's Black 92LX-
At times, SIGARMS restrict's sales of the 9m/m P228
(the compact version, with an American style grip
angle also known by its military designation as the
M11) to civilians. Reason? So, SIGARMS can
fill order's for military and law enforcement sales*.
The P228 is quite popular among a variety of circles.
The P226 is a full size firearm chambered in 9m/m,
.357 SIG, and .40 S&W. The P228 is ONLY chambered
for the 9m/m Parabellum. Both are/were available
with several different finish'es.
*FootNote: at least that is the reason that SIGARMS
loves to quote!

What can I say I pretty much tried them all and they are all just about perfect for me.
P220 in .45 and P225 in 9mm are my personal top of the heap but there isn't a one I don't like.
They are accurate, durable, reliable, attractive and even Sheslinger has come over to the side of light and agrees that the controls are extremely intuitive.
I have never had a SIG malfunction on me. Not the ones I personally own nor any of the many others I have shot over the years. I can say that about no other semi automatic handguns.
Oh yes and it is a disease sort of a wasting disease that attacks your checkbook. Only problem with SIGs is once you get one or two everything else is well......just a gun. Well there is the HK P7 and the occasional uber1911 but once you go SIG you pretty much start at the top of the mountain.
As someone put in another thread, welcome to the one true sword.

Yes, there is such a thing as SIGitis. My friend and fellow Dixie resident Ala Dan has it big time. Just ask him about his P220 and other SIGs!
I have the fine Model P226 and it is a very ergonomic accurate pistol. Works like a charm and that's all you can really ask of a pistol in my book! :)

so 9mm Luger and Parabellum are the same cartridge right???
well i really think the 226 is going to be my arm of choice unless they release the 228 by April. so my question is should i only buy mags made by sig?? or are some of the nonfactory companies good enough. and what's the best place to get sig accessories online??
You all have been excelent help i truely appreciate it.

Ok here is the general rule of thumb regarding magazines for anything but 1911s.
ONLY BUY FACTORY OR MEC-GAR. Mec-Gar makes many, many of the factory magazines for many companies including SIG. Pro Mag, USA, Western etc. are all hit and miss at best and crap most of the time. Really not worth the money. You buy a world class handgun buy it world class ammo and accessories.
The one and only one exception I have found are the magazines made by ACT-MAG for the P220. They are as good if not better than factory magazines at half the price. I believe they will be marketed under the Novak name eventually. They were designed and produced by ex Mec-Gar employees so technically they are a Mec-Gar mag. See above rule.
As for 1911 magazines. Heck most of the after market guys make the better magazines. Wilson Combat, Chip McCormick, Novak, etc. The weird thing is I have heard many people complain about Mec-Gar magazines for 1911s. I have never used them in a 1911 for this reason, that and there are just so many other choices.
Anyway do yourself a favor and stick to factory for defense and when you want to shoot not clear malfunctions. Use aftermarket for failure drills.

Another vote confirming the blessed reality of SIG Syndrome...both my first SIG and my first .40 arrived to me in the form of a P239 back in April. This fantastic pistol has caused me more than once to consider selling or trading my 1911 toward a twin 239. :)

I got a permanent case of SSS.....SIGSauer Syndrome during my second exposure to classic SIGs. It didn't catch when I had a 239, but when I wrapped my hands around a 228 for the first time I was hooked. It's all downhill from there, and luckily there is no cure!

92LX, if you like the 228 but can't find one, look into the 229. Has the same compact frame, just a bit heavier, but you get higher quality slide construction.

so 9mm Luger and Parabellum are the same cartridge right???
Yup. There are quite a few "9mm's" out there, and the one we usually call 9mm here in the States is "9X19" (the 19 refers to the case length IIRC). Two other 9's I see around are the 9x21 & 9x23 (this has a following, with about .357 Magnum ballistics out of a full size 5" 1911). Then the ".380" is actually another, shorter, 9mm. I think the 9 Mak is a 9x18. And the "new" 357 Sig is a short stubby 9mm. There are more that other folks here probably know more about.
Lotsa 9mm's out there. Sig makes good ones.

I have to admit at one time, years ago i thought Sigs were ugly. Then a shot a 226.
<Maybe the BEST factory grip I've ever felt, fit my hand like a glove, astoundingly accurate. Every time I pulled the trigger the brass went the same place. Only reason I don't have one is that they were a LOT of money, and I still don't like DA/SA guns much.

Black92LX,
Even though SIG may not list P228's on their website they are still available from dealers NIB. Try www.onpointfirearms.com, they can get you a P228 NIB for around $550 and they are in stock.
I have SIG Syndrom big time! My P220 .45 was my first handgun, I've had it since I was 13! I'm now 19 and between me and my father we have about half a dozen SIGs. Come visit us over at www.sigforum.com if you want to learn more about SIGs than you ever wanted to :D . You may even be able to find one for sale there in your area so you can buy one before you are 21  .
