Scenario: A bomb around the neck

Ok, how would you deal with the following scenario:

You are a delivery man. You bring a package to a house. The door is opened, you are grabbed, and pulled into the house, with a gun pointed at your head. A bomb is attached to your chest. You are disarmed at gun point. And no, there is no time for a quick draw, a gun is kept against your temple during the process.

You are instructed to go to a bank, give them a note demanding money, then leave the bank, and return to have the bomb removed. The timer goes off in 30 minutes. You don't know whether trying to remove the bomb would make it go off.

What do you do?

sounds like Phone Booth II: The Return....

I would walk to the bank, take out my cell phone, and call 911 and stay on the phone with them as I did the robbery, and tell them the adress of the house. Hopefully they would storm the house, kill the M-f-er, and disarm the bomb.

Well, regardless of how things go down at the bank, you're pretty much assured you're going to die (I seriously doubt they will let you live).

I'd start futzing with the bomb and try to make it go off close enough to one of my kidnappers to take him with me.

Other then that, winstonsmith's idea ain't half bad.

Here's what I'd do:

1) Call the cops, ASAP. Tell everything. His mistake was in trying to rob the bank and wasting too much time on that.

2) Get said cops to leave you alone with a roll of duct tape and at least five or six sets of ballistic vests. And a pair of scissors.

Time elapsed so far: 10 to 15 minutes.

3) While the bomb squad is coming, and the ordinary cops are about 50 yards off watching, first cut my shirt off. Second, WITHOUT cutting any wires or altering the bomb, slide body armor panels up between the bomb and my body, front and back. If it'll fit, slide a second set in. Then surround my head in yet another and duct-tape around the neck - right, visibility and head movement go out the window but...who cares. Any extra time, do up the lower torso, legs and arms. (Come to think, lower torso right before the head/neck protection...and try and borrow a full-face motorcycle helmet while I'm at it, if there's any bikers around.)

4) Hope like hell the bomb squad gets there before I have to test my "creation" :scrutiny:.

If i'm delivering the package in my truck. I think would go get the mini-14 out of the truck and see if i have a clean shot at the BG.

So if you kidnapped some guy and put a bomb around his neck, are you going to let him out of sight or earshot?

I'm thinking you'd have a guy with a garage door opener type device watching and listening to everything you do.

Find JimPeel and let him remove it? ;)

Actually, I'd probably head out, stop around the block, remove the bomb, call the police, and wait away from it.

I'm not going to be anyone's canine of the female persuasion.

If it explodes and kills me, I've had a pretty good run.

Just thought of another scenario to counter the remote detonation.

Go to the bank.

Head for the bathroom. Take off the bomb and leave it in there.

High tail it out, pull the fire alarm, and get everyone the hell out of the building.

If he wants to blow it now, let him blow it. American Standard will thank him for the business.

I would use my martial arts skills to break the SOB's arms and legs as soon as he made the slightest slip up.

Then I would torture him until he told me how to safely remove the bomb. While making him intimately aquainted with the wonderful world of pain I would keep myself close enough to him that the bomb would kill him too if it went off.

Afterward I would call the police and hope they would understand the mess.

My wife works as a piza delivery driver. In Illinois where she cannot legally cary a weapon for defence.

We both read the article on Fox news yesterday. Then picked it apart.

Two things were done wrong by the pizza store owner, and some by the driver.

First the owner sent a driver to an unconfirmed address. A major NO NO.
Second he didn't do a call back to verify if the phone used was a legitament number.
Both of these things should be done to protect the driver.

The store where my wife works will not deliver to an unconfirmed address. And there has been at least one instance where someone has gone with her when she went to an address that was confirmed, but the callers were suspicious.

I can't blame the cops for standing by waiting for the bomb squad. Regular street cops have no training for explosive devices.
As stated above though, I believe the driver handled everything wrong. He should have gone straight to a phone and called the cops. He said the bomb was on a timer. Well, then he knew he had little time to loose and unfortunatly, he wasted it. What makes this very suspicious is that instead of calling 911, his only recourse in this instance, he went ahead and robbed the bank.
If I was in his place, and knowing that I was probably going to be killed anyway, I do believe I would have made some attempt to get the bomb off myself. What would I have to loose?

Y'know, with all the speculation going on I have to be the dissenting voice. I can sit here and come up with all sorts of ideas now, but put on the spot with no time to think about it? I've got no idea how I'd react if somebody strapped a bomb to my neck. I'd like to think I'd act rationally, but having never been in that situation, or anything quite that stressfull, for all I know I'd collapse and make a mess in my pants while bawling like a baby. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't, but I doubt I'd be completely calm and clear-headed either.

Guys this case is just another confirmation of the fact that even if you have a gun you are not protected. You need to be aware of your situation and surroundings at all times. I have always been that way and by now it's just second nature to me. Sometimes people think I'm weird when my head snaps if a door opens or whatever, but that's just how I am. I try not to be paranoid, but at the same time you need to be aware of your surroundings. Somebody has as much chance strapping a bomb around the neck of somebody who is aware and armed as they do of winning the Indianapolis 500 with a Ford Pinto.

In the CNN story there is a quote:
He noted the bomb was wrapped around the man's neck, which he described as "the most dangerous type of bomb"

What the hell does that mean?!?! I mean, am I the only one who finds this to be somewhat understated and obvious? A bomb strapped to someone's neck is pretty dangerous, huh? Good info to have I suppose. Pretty crappy luck for that guy. I think I'd want to try to take them out with me too.

Full quote:

He noted the bomb was wrapped around the man's neck, which he described as "the most dangerous type of bomb" for bomb technicians because they have to physically defuse it.

Makes more sense if not taken out of context.

If a package bomb or explosive 'in-place', you can always evacuate, use robotics to move it to secure site for remote detonation, place sandbags around it to minimize blast, etc.

A bomb around a human endangers the victim as well as one or more demolitions experts needed to physically defuse it.

"If a package bomb or explosive 'in-place', you can always evacuate, use robotics to move it to secure site for remote detonation, place sandbags around it to minimize blast, etc."

I have been on a few bomb calls and they never made any attempt to defuse the bomb. In every case I personally have seen, they X-rayed the suspicious package and decided that they could not rule out it was a bomb. They then attached their own explosive device to the suspected bomb and blew it in place. I understand that other times they place the suspected bomb into some kind of container and transport it to a nearby military base and blow it up. If the bomb was on a human, this isn't an option. As was mentioned, they would actually have to try to defuse it. You can imagine how difficult this might be when you have no idea how it is built and what kinds of booby traps are involved. I would imagine that attempting to actually disarm a bomb would be an absolute last resort and something primarily reserved for the movies.

I should add that I have been on these calls where they determined that it wasn't a bomb also.

I would consider that the vest might have a hidden cell phone/radio so they can hear everything I say. I think I would swing by my home (assuming it was close by) and pick up tape recorder to record my last will/goodby. AND my gun/vest. Then fake rob bank and return with (money) and go for knees/elbows/etc. Did I mention I would have the cops there as well. I would write down all info and put on front door. Call 911 from landline and leave.

In a situation like that, there seems to be no options. In the news this morning they were showing the large steel collar the pizza delivery man was wearing locking the bomb to his neck.

Only thing I could think to do is hope I am not being followed and look for the nearest swimming pool, or at least a shower, and try and disarm the bomb with water. And hope the bomb is not command detonated capable. Might work.

another vote for immediately just jumping on the guy who installed the freakin' thing. If it goes off, cool -- varmint control. If not, even better. Some things just call for immediate, total, and dirty retaliation, regardless of the personal consequences. That's one of 'em.

As already mentioned.. there's likely no way of getting out of the situation alive.. so might as well have company for the trip. :)

Why not push things to a more gun-oriented SHTF scenario. Let's say we are all high school kids somewhere in Colorado when all of a sudden Commie paratroopers come out of the sky, land, and start attached quadlock bombs around the necks of every person they meet and with no formal training aside from being teenagers, we are going to come up with a means by which to thwart the better armed Commies.

This one is a gimmie. I would just go to the trunk of my car and get the O2 bottle. I'd aim it in close proximity to the device and crack the valve. After waiting approximately 17 seconds for the mechanism to freeze I'd remove my diamond tip hammer from the trunk and shatter the device. After a quick double martini (shaken, not stirred) I would locate the aforementioned A-hole that put it on my neck and use the same proceedure on his dome. Voila!

Edited to add: this procedure was for the original scenario. I will have to pontificate for another 34 seconds to address the Red Dawn permutation.

Look, without examining the device in detail, all of us are talking out of our asses with regards to "coulda woulda shoulda". The pictures I've seen of it show it to be a pretty sophisticated device, rife with all sorts of antitampering / antidisturbance fuzing. The EOD techs I've discussed this with have all wondered the same thing though - where the hell was the bomb squad? 40 minutes to get there?!?!?! What, were they at lunch?

Regardless, the guy's only option would probably to have been wrapped in a few bomb blankets, and to lay down and have the robot shoot the charge or disrupt it in place. The disruptors they have these days can do amazing things... but the techs have to get there first.

Someone's going to be sued over this.

I would not be in any shape to go to the bank, because it would take a hell of a beating to get that bomb on me, gun or no gun. If they did manage it, I would wrap myself around their legs and make them beat me some more. Like they say -NEVER create a secondary crime scene. That whole story is extremely fishy.

Do not use cell phone. Using the cell phone may detonate the device- perhaps not even the initial call, but when the phone switches to another tower.

If I somehow found myself in this situation, I would stay right next to the loser who hung the monkey on me. I go, you go.

Spark-

40 minutes to get there?!?!?!

I'd really like to know where you get that response time from. The newspaper articles say the bomb exploded 40 minutes after the guy entered the bank to rob it, not from the time the cops slapped the cuff on him. It sounds like at most, minutes passed from the time the cops had first contact with the suspect until it detonated. Even so, unless it's a very large city most places don't have a full time bomb squad assembled sitting down somewhere 7/24/365 around the clock. They are composed of multiple individuals who may be from more than one jurisdiction/agency and have to be assembled. 40 minutes may be the response time to the scene even if they were assembled, depending on how far they had to go and traffic conditions. Time was fleeting here, period. :(

From MSNBC.com
After his arrest on Thursday, Wells told police officers that that he had been forced to rob the bank after someone put a bomb on him. He died minutes later when the bomb exploded as officers waited for a bomb squad to arrive.

September 4, 2003, 03:17 PM
Well, Id disarm the bomb. :D Thats what I do for a living though. As someone mentioned before, this would be one of the few situations that an EOD (bomb squad) tech would hand-enter (red wire/blue wire) an explosive device. Only when there is a real possibility of people losing their lives would you take the chance. Otherwise a BIP (blow in place) is usually a good option. All depends on the scenerio though.

September 4, 2003, 03:32 PM
Hope this isn't too far a deviation from the original topic, but would your answers change if the BG's put the device around the neck of a loved one and told you they'd blow it if you didn't commit a crime?

Just saw an update on "On the Record" about this. Greta (sp) had the dudes brother on.

Did anybody see this?

He claims that it was a set up to kill his brother, in public as a statement. Don't know what the statement was or who the statement was to be made about or against. He pointed out the "Guess" shirt that his brother was wearing was part of this plan. Also claims their were notes not written by his brother that were in the car.

The brother's claims were twisted and rather interesting.

Any info given by perps should be discounted and any available perps should be killed. Friends, esp. of SWAT persuasion should be alerted. Cooperation doesn't guarantee or even remotely influence good outcome, as they aren't playing fair from the start.

All I can say is, don't get a bomb strapped to you in the first place....

best solution yet. I figure it could go in one of three ways.

1) I win and go on with my life (yay)

2) Im unconsious and it is thus pointless to try to get me to rob a bank.

3) i end up dead but, at least i didnt have to sit there and count the minutes till me head exploded.

All three of thsoe possible resolutions are better than what happens if you get the bomb.
