What are the advantages of Moly coating bullets and can a person do it hisself? Is NECO Moly the way to go? Steve

Haven't used moly myself. General info using moly bullets says you'll get
3 % less pressure and 2 % less velocity using the same bullet one moly and the other not. It'll take some shooting before your barrel becomes coated with moly and velocity and accuracy settles down. Some use Kano-Kroil penetrating oil to clean the moly from the barrel if it gets fouled and accuracy drops off. There are several articles on the net about moly found using a google search for moly coating bullets. Some say it improves barrel life and some have reported that the moly left in the barrel "can" cause rust from humidity. I don't know about that but is what I've read.

I can only tell you my experience and it was bad from using moly coated bullets in my 45acp, barrel begin to pit after some use ( I cleaned after each shooting) while barrel remained accurate it looked terrible, I exchanged barrels and have not used moly again, I really see no need for it in pistols at all nor would I use in a rifle that was accurate.

I called one of the major bullet mfg. about their moly coated bullets. Their reply was don't mess with it, wasn't enough advantage to it to make it worthwhile, and their was problems with the coating it left in the barrel. Can't remember which mfg. it was but was either Hornady or Sierra.
