In further honor of Carlos Hathcock and all the other brave souls out there who have defended this country with their shooting skills, we're doing the same target as August with some slight modifications.

I've bumped this month's target up to 50 yards to encourage more shooters.

Carlos Hathcock (http://www.snipercentral.com/wpost.htm) Memorial Match

Grab your favorite rifle(s) and test your shooting skills.

http://www.snipershide.com/tacticalshoot/images/crlos300.pdf

U.S. Service Rifles and Civilian Equivalent - U.S. Highpower Service Rifle - i.e. AR15, M1A, M1, 1917, 1903, 30-40 Krag, Trapdoor Springfield, P/53 Enfield rifled musket, etc.
1. Standing: Standing, Unsupported -- Use of support sling NOT allowed.
2. Prone: Prone, Sitting or Kneeling -- Use of support sling IS allowed.

-Please encourage friends and family to enter
-Excellent excercise to get your rifle ready for hunting season
-Breaking the line into a higher ring scores in the higher ring.

Three entries allowed per THR member.

Please post your scores here on this thread with the following information:

THR Member Name --
Score ____/100 ___/X
Class --
Weapon --
Caliber --

Safe shooting and good luck!

I've probably made this too complicated, so please post any questions you have.

Rules refresher:

1. Print out ONE and ONLY ONE copy of the month’s target for each class in which you will participate (maximum of three targets printed)
2. Take all the practice shots you want at a different target to site in your gun, but you only get ONE CHANCE at each month’s target in each class.
3. When you’re ready, shoot the course of fire at the target, take as long as you like.
4. Post your score, class, weapon and caliber on that month's match thread.

SCORING: Add up hits in each ring for your score. X’s count as ten and are used to break ties. If you break the line into the higher ring, you get the higher score. Two or more bullets through the same hole? I’ve heard this happens, so if you’re lucky enough to have it happen to you, please note on your target and score it. In general, scoring questions will lean towards the shooter.

The Rules:
-Treat all guns as if they were always loaded
-Never let the muzzle cover anything that you are not willing to destroy
-Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target
-Be sure of your target and what’s behind it
-SAFELY follow the course of fire described for each month’s match
-Only shoot where it is safe and legal to do so
-Ammo – Feel free to use any ammunition you like, as long as it is safe. The bottom line is to SHOOT SAFELY.

HONOR CODE: Remember: “Character means Doing the Right Thing Even When Nobody's Looking.” Print out only ONE target per shooter per class per month. Shoot your course of fire and report your score.

Shoot Safely and Good Luck!

Is the line ready? The line is ready! Ready on the right? Ready on the left? Ready on the Firing Line.

Commence Firing!:D

Think I'll give this a try. At first I thought I'd be practically cheating using my scoped and bipod-ed AR at 50 yards. Then I printed the target out. WOW! Those are some little circles with tiny X's....

So, just to clarify so I don't DQ myself:

printed target out on 8.5x11 paper, hang at 50 yards, practice on a different target.

My Bushmaster Varminter scoped on a bipod would be Benchrest class?

Use a seperate target for say....my Marlin 1894S .44 mag for Non-Service Rife prone?

Deadline is end of month, but I plan on shooting this next week. Perhaps I can talk a friend into trying it with his FAL.

Black Snowman
September 3, 2003, 01:13 PM
The FAL? Well, I'll have to experiment some with it first. It might be accurate enough for standing but I've never had any decent ammo through it. In benchrest definately have to give the new CZ 550 V.L. a workout and try out my reloads. Of course I don't even have the thing broken in yet so some prep is going to be nessisary. I don't even know if we can shoot prone unless we get some pads. Laying down on the bare concrete could get a bit uncomfy. Especially with recoil involved.

Of course I could use this as an excuse to get that EAA Biathlon Basic I've had my eye on. But I really need to reel in my spending. But it would be perfect for this. Oh the humanity!

And yes, there are six shots in that one hole! Once I found where to hold, they just fell right in place. Too bad I didn't hold just a touch lower...

If you break the line into the higher ring, you get the higher score.

Kamicosmos -- It looks to me like you have a 100 9x. You don't need to hit the X, you just need to break the X ring.

ReadyontheRight
September 7, 2003, 09:50 AM
OK -- It looks like this month will be a chase after the number of Xs -- especially those shooting with scopes on benches.

So...if we do have a boatload of 100 10x's, ties will be broken by your scores in the other classes. This means you should definitely shoot prone and standing as well as off the bench. Remember -- your BEST score goes to your yearly total.

Keep shooting!

Benchrest, scoped CZ 550 Varmint Laminate, .308 Win., bipod, handloads.

I'm not sure if I should blame the gun, scope or myself but I know this isn't up to par for me. The shots kept drifing left even as I increased my hold to the right. Could be that the gun is so new and it's not broken in yet, there could be a problem with my reloads but I don't think so, they were made with quite a bit of TLC and performed well sighting in with them at 100 yds. 168 gr Speer "MHP"BT, 45.5 gr Varget, CCI LR primer, Lee crimped, and Israli military surplus brass.

My scope my be drifiting or the mounts settling in. These were the most powerful loads I've put through the thing so it's possible. Enough excuses, here it is:

http://home.kc.rr.com/bsmith1952/img/Guns/Burt%2050yd%2009-06-03.jpg

If I'm reading it correctly I have a 100 4x, although one each of them are suspect and it might be a 99 3x.

I experimented with the Century C1A1 Sporter I've got but even bench resting I'm not that good with it. The trigger is just horrible on that thing and needs some work. It's fairly short and crisp but it's WAY to heavy for my taste. If the grip fit my hand better it would be less of an issue. Maybe I'll have to borrow something for standing and prone. Or buy something, which I really don't need to be doing ;)

Hey ROTR, I just want to confirm that we can use one rifle for three classes this month. I guess I don't see why not, just making sure. I still don't think I will use the 10/22 for all three. Probably going to use three different rifles just for the fun of it.

For those of you who have not shot in a while:

I got rid of the PO Box for our monthly match. I could never make it to the Post Office during their working hours and I can spend the $53/Year on more ammo.:D

Just post your scores here on THR. Post your scanned targets if you like as well, but it's not required.

The prone score surprised me. I didnt think those 107 gn bullets would stabilize well enough at 50 yards to shoot a bughole. Too bad they dont work very well on critters.

My score dropped on the standing as I thought I was shooting an IPSC match and got in a hurry.

Not bad for the first time shooting for score in 5 years.but sheesh!I REALLY need more practice (was too busy taking care of my wife while she recovered from shoulder surgery this summer, to get much range time in.) and before i try and shoot another one of these matches i REALLY need to get/build something better suited to the use!!

i DID try and shoot a standing stage as well, but my lack of practice/skill at off-hand shooting without a sling, a lightweignt, Non-target gun, a puny 4x scope and having the target "fade" (sucker almost looked blank white when i tried it standing ) on me. resulted in me not only having a "pattern" instead of a "group", but winding up with 2-3 rounds in the target i had intended to use as a "sitting" target. :banghead:

translation/moral.... my next two rifle purchases are gonna HAVE to be that target/varmint/tactical bolt gun i've been planning, and a 10/22 to "strip and rebuild" into a target gun, plus some REAL rifle rest gear, heck even a Hornady "delta rest" and a throw-bag would be better than what i';ve got!!

The off hand stage did not go well. I guess I thought that I'd be billy badask and walk up first shots of the day from a cold clean oiled barrel and go for it with some 55 gr'ers for that touch of realism...Well. reality sucks!! Lets just say that I know I lost this stage and leave it at that.

After the foul (ing) shots, I shot some respectable groups with the 55's, just not on the right paper. After that I sorta dialed in the 69gr MK's and did the prone stage. First time out with the 69gr loads, not bad but could be better. I only had 40 rnds of the 69's with me so I'm not sure yet if I'm really needing a sight adjustment, or more work on my positioning.

The 68.5 gr softpoints were given to me by a board member's friend who swaged them, so those 10 rounds were previously untested. I've had them loaded for awhile so figured what the hey. Since they were so close in weight to the 69's I hoped they would print good enough to give an acceptable score in the V Match. I was not disappointed. The two flyers are probably my fault, tho all ten felt & looked good when they broke. These bullets may be better than the MK's, but with such a small lot of each to shoot, thats speculation still.

I gotta work on my offhand shooting for sure.

(All you guys with scopes are cheaters, sic):D Kidding but teaches one to keep your head down and move only at night!

Since my Bushmaster upper is off to Maine to be made to more to my likeing (story to be posted soon in General Discussion), I had to shoot the Service rifle class with my Mosin. 81 with 1X. The Flyer was a flinch on my part.

I tried to shoot non service with a old Mossberg 250 22 bought at a yard sale for $35.00. I should have sighted it in. I had a nice 3 inch group offhand but only 3 rounds were in the scored portion of the target. I won't bother to post it. I'll use it in a future match after sighting in.

Still a fun month. Wish I had gotten my Bushy back in time.

tell me a support sling is something other than the regular old sling that came with my rifle, i just used it the old wrapped around the arm method,,,

if i messed up on that,,,disqualify my offhand :(

If you used any type of sling in the standing, you are disqualified and banned from the next four events! Just kidding about the banned from the next four events. In national match highpower, you don't get any type of sling aka support sling. I think that is what ROTR was trying to get at. So if you used your regular sling to cinch up a little in the standing catagories, it is a support sling and you were not supposed to do that. I would think you still have time to go out and shoot it one more time without it and see how well you did. Or the general consensus might be since you aren't up in the top numbers with your standing score that you score can stand for this month. I don't think anyone is going to be too upset.

If you want to add the pictures as a link or actually put them in your post, you need to have a web hosting service of some type. For example, my Road Runner cable internet provider gives me two megabytes of space that I can store things online. Using an FTP program I transfer my files from my computer up onto the web. Then I provide the links to those pictures like I did above with the command ["url=][/url] (the " is added so it would display). I could also use the link to add the picture into my post. If you don't have space provided by your service provider, then you can search for one of the free web hosting services that are out there. So you would upload your files to the service and they would provide you a link to your pictures, then you could insert them in the post. I would do a search on TFL or THR for inserting pictures or something. There have already been numerous posts on this subject.

Welcome to THR Hoser! Very nice shooting in your first match. I assume you've done this before -- perhaps at longer distances. Do you shoot with our Steve Smith in Colorado?

Hoser wins the 100-10x Benchrest shootout by adding another 100-10x shooting Non-Service rifle prone AND by shooting a 100-3x in Service Rifle Standing.

Hoser takes 3 of the 5 categories. Good enough to win a plug for your club's website: http://www.limitedgun.com/

Quantrill Shoots a 97-3x to win Service Rifle Prone.

El Rojo wins Non-Service Rifle Standing with an 83-1x.

Great shooting and a good turn-out this month. Be sure to get out and shoot in October's hunting-style one-shot match!

True that 280plus!!!!

btw the only reason that I am leading in overall score is that I have an entry for each month.

Thanks ROTR. I had fun shooting this postal match. I got to break out my old NM AR-15 that I havent shot in years.

I grew up shooting High Power, Silhouette and a little benchrest. Lately all I shoot is IPSC and a little prairie dog and coyote hunting. Shooting my Tubb and my Panda that close was like cheating. I didnt think the VLD bullets would be stable enough at that close range to shoot decent groups.

I havent shot with Steve, but I know his face. I might start shooting the occasional High Power Match again. I only need a few more points to leg out.

In 2005 my push is going to be to make the Olympic Team for Rapid Fire. Its an excuse to buy another 2K gun or two...

Actually, I would like to know which match I missed. I didn't think I ever missed a match. I started shooting the Pepsi can in February and have shot all 8 matches including that match. What did we have prior to February? I smell a fixed game! Oh wait, I need a shower, so nevermind. Anyway, check that out ROTR and let me know which one I missed.

Oh one more thing. I think we ought to have a calander year winner. That way everyone gets a clean slate for the next year. And we can also have a lifetime tally if someone wanted. I mean basically DPV and I have a pretty big advantage on everyone else as long as we keep shooting. The only reason I am down so much is because of the initial worst score rule. I vote clean the slate at the end of December.

El Rojo -- I've been traveling so it took me a while to get to this.

It looks like you missed the first month.

http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4649&perpage=25&highlight=mail%20in%20match%20january&pagenumber=1

It was a .357/.38 wheelgun shoot at 10 yards.

DeputyVaughn -- 90+% of succes involves showing up. Nice work!

I remember that now! I didn't read the thread much and didn't realize people shot their 9mms in an open class until after it was over. Thank you! All is forgiven for your slow reply. Don't even both giving me those newborn/todler, family, and business excuses. Unacceptable! ;)
