The thread got locked up in Rifle Country (for good reason).

But I was talking to max popenker about the particular cartridge that is used in the VSS and a few other Russian sniper and subsonic app firearms.

Case dimensions are scarce on the internets and was curious as to the actual bullet diameter, if anyone could provide that info...I am thinking that a beater mauser might sacrifice itself in the name of Science and Firearms Fun. :)

I am thinking like a 24" barrel, single shot, and powders used for large case and heavy bullets like perhaps Trailboss (if cast lead) or Blue-Dot or Red-Dot, Unique, AA#2, Lil'Gun, etc etc....

The conversion of bullet weight called out, IIRC, to about 250 gr. or so...perhaps sized cast lead bullets, gas checked, and thumped out with a 10 gr. dose of Trailboss might make a fun little target round...

I wouldn't worry about official Russian dimensions unless you have a source of official Russian ammunition.

Treat it as a straight neck up of 7.62 and use a standard .358" barrel.

The Russians might use 9.2mm Mak or 9.3mm Euro hunting rifle bores, but why make trouble for yourself if you only want the ballistics?

This is probably for the best. Good suggestion.

Now I just have to start putting it all together. :)

db_tanker,

I wouldn't worry too much about the Russian version either. It had headspace issues. Instead of just a straight neck up, I suggest you blow the shoulder out a bit too.

You could go with a TC Encore for the initial platform. Barrel makers will make any caliber you want if you supply the reamers.

Now I think of it, a .35 Remington with heavy bullet loads would simplify matters a whole lot.

Mike at OTT chambers encore barrels with EDM, no reamers required.

.357 Herrett would be even closer. If you make your brass from .225 Win cases they would even fit a surplus mauser boltface.

I have made .357 Herrett and don't want to do that any more. Maybe the O.P. is more energetic than me.

I just said it was possible, notice I didn't volunteer to make cases. Although, if you rough trim with endmill in a drill press it isn't so bad.

HCPookie makes his own guns and ammunition.

Someone sent him a 9x39 case and projectile.

Sounds like y'all might want to compare notes.
