I think it's only a matter of time until we get some kind of Kalashnikov-based rifle in 6.5x39mm.
Does anyone know of any plans on the horizon?
I know I'd sure love a Saiga in 6.5 Grendel...

There have been a few folks who've built a 6.5 Grendel AK.

That is what the Kalashnikov-specific forums are for.

As far as "commercially available", don't hold your breath. . .

I meant commercially.
However, that guy's custom AK in 6.5 on Saiga12 forums is pretty neat.

I'm curious... why would you want such a thing? The AK's not built to be a really accurate rifle, and the 6.5mm round lends itself to much accuracy... just seems sort of weird to me.

The AK can be pretty accurate if you want it to be.
I think it'd make a fine battle rifle. So would a 6.8 SPC AK.
It's just preference, really. I like 6.5 Grendel. I like AKs.

No disrespect, of course.
What sort of magazines would a 6.5mm AK use?

Awesome ones.
No, really, probably modified Galil mags, I imagine. Hell, you could actually get thirty rounds out of one of those.

My AK65 (http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=353318) will be using 6.5 Grendel AR mags in a STANAG magwell.

It's progressing rather slowly, I'll probably be ordering the barrel blank this weekend.

You got a link for that?

I'd love an XCR in 6.5G. Too bad I have to spend money on things like Rent, Tuition and that pesky chick thing that calls herself my girlfriend....

Don't get me wrong, I'd take an AK or an XCR in 6.5G!

The one on the saiga 12 forums appears to use a galil->stanag adaptor so that it feeds straight from your garden variety 6.5 grendel mags.

I've got to wonder about that HK style rear sight. It appears to be attached directly to the dust cover.

Maybe the whole thing is built off a valmet or galil reciever?

Edit:

Nevermind, I read more and apparently it uses a hinged receiver cover.

That thing is really a one-off.

Bill Alexander of Alexander Arms was trying to get the Russians to build a 6.5 Grendel caliber Saiga rifle. That was over a year ago. I haven't seen him in a while so I don't know what happened.

I like the concept of the 6.5G also.

I jumped in whole hog and had an Overwatch upper and built an 18" SPR also. Getting components was quite a pain but I finally get it done.

My biggest issue came to the ammo itself. Commercial ammo was either out-of-this-world expensive or crap (I found the Wolf Gold to be crap, in my experience...YMMV). I found the cartridge to be very finicky in my reloading experience...I could find a load that would be very accurate but not optimal in other respects (e.g., velocity). Components were also very expensive with few sources carrying them.

In the end, the cartridge is a great idea...but you have to be pretty dedicated to be a user. I thought I liked odd-ball things and am usually willing to work outside of the mainstream. I wasn't, however, dedicated enough to be a long term 6.5G guy. Nothing wrong with the products...just a bit too much work for me.

I switched to the 6.8 SPC and am very happy.

Anybody know of anything on the table for a 6.8 SPC AK?

Haven't heard of it, but don't think it would be much more complicated than a 6.5 Grendel AK (though you'd have to get a bolt built somewhere), only you'd want to start with a 5.56mm AK as a base gun.

I really didn't think it necessary.
The two cartridges are uttered almost in the same breath.
And the subject is VERY similar.

What could you do for 6.8 SPC magazines in an AK (besides a STANAG magwell adapter)?

What could you do for 6.8 SPC magazines in an AK (besides a STANAG magwell adapter)? It should be easier using a Weiger or Bulgarian waffle magazine + follower. They are quite a bit more rugged than a USGI mag and shouldn't have the 'swelling' problem.

I think(don't quote me on this) Tromix did a 6.8SPC AK build a while back. I could be wrong however.
