If you've spent more than five minutes over on Bladeforums, you probably will have read the thread, "EDC, what's in your pockets?" It is a very fun thread to read, and also very informative. There are plenty of eye-candy pictures as well.

THR doesn't have a thread like this. There was one in Strategies and Tactics, I think, and Carl's thread "pocket stuff", but otherwise, we don't have a place to discuss what we are carrying each day.

Here are the rules:
You post the contents of your pockets, bag, belt, jacket, etc. Pictures are appreciated. You can post as little as one time, if you always carry the same stuff, or every day for as long as this thread lasts.

So, without further adieu:

Right front: Today, CRKT M16, Zytel handles.
Left front: Samsung Sync
Left Back: Bandana
Right back: eelskin wallet
Right Wrist: medical bracelet (name, mechanical heart valve, taking Coumadin)
Left wrist: Tissot Quadrato Chrono, stainless bracelet, balck face. I love this watch, it was my primary Swiss souvenier.

So, what's in you pockets?

If you enjoyed reading about "What's in your pockets?" here in TheHighRoad.org archive, you'll LOVE our community. Come join TheHighRoad.org today for the full version!

Not in pockets, but have a Kahr MK9 and extra mag in a Smart Carry rig (which is sorta like an extra "pocket in your pants"). Oh, ok, I cheated - the T-mobile Wing is not in pockets either, but on belt.

**Except for one thing: If you have the cash and your service provider is compatible, get the i-Phone or Treo 700 over the Wing. Wing is pretty spiffy, but it's no i-Phone.

No watch, cell phone, or bandana. Good god man, how do you live?

Today while out and about:

Left front: some change, my keys with a AAAmini flash light on them, a single blade Lakota pocket knife (NRA gimme)

Front right:
P32 in suede holster

Belt:
Buck 112 and Leatherman in pouches

Left rear bandana (not sure whose gang color this week nor do I care)

Right rear:
Wallet with some cash, book of matches and DL and CWL (need both)

Cranium:
Eyes, ears, nose, and Brain.

Last night I went heavy by slipping into my secret identity as a Central Florida Armed Marsupial. Leather belt pouch with full sized 1911type .45 Auto, two spare mags, two AA flashlights (one LED and the other old style MiniMag lite) First aid supplies writing supplies, spare smallish cheap lock blade, bandana extra coinage, sugar tablets.

I am considering adding a quart freezer bag and a former eye drop bottle filled with clorox, but I might have to sacrifice a flash light to do so.

As it happens last night I was also discussing a stage bag for the car, but let's not go there.

Oh shoot why not?

GUy I was discussing it with bought two German Surplus army soft packs alredy found the side pockets can each hold a one liter bottle of water. We discussed desirability of having a usable pair of walking shoes in or on the pack. Better fire starting or sustaning (buddy burners) and some sort of expediate shelter, munchies and other goodies he might need to walk from work to home (29 miles so fer sure overnight at least once)

I have been considering adding a Chocolate Manhole Cover.(extra points fer picking up on that one)

Are we there yet?

http://www.noisyroom.net/pix/thr/2008_0817-Knife/Smaller/2008_0817-Knife005.jpg

Stuff taken out of glove "pouch:" Kershaw Double Cross, EKA/Wenger Executive SAK, Streamlight Task 1AA flashlight, 2GB flash drive, and (not shown) key to the office & tweezers
http://www.noisyroom.net/pix/thr/2008_0817-Knife/Smaller/2008_0817-Knife004.jpg

http://www.noisyroom.net/pix/thr/2008_0817-Knife/Smaller/2008_0817-Knife006.jpg

The eye drops live in the same pocket as the glove but aren't carried in the glove.

I'll probably trade out one of the knives from the glove for a Bic lighter. I don't smoke, but I think carrying the means to make fire is simply prudent, given where I live.

One of these days I'll have to shoehorn a CCW into that mix.

One of these days.

Arfin, how come you carry so many knives on you?

ArfinGreebly
August 18, 2008, 02:31 AM
I wasn't going to post in this thread, partly because it's non-trivial to document my darned pockets, and partly because of the very predictable "what the heck??" question.

Well, you see, it's like this . . .

For the last, uh, what . . . four? . . . years, I've been engaged in a kind of personal research quest to determine what knife or knives work best for me.

For the first 20 years of carrying a knife, it was a common SAK-styled Imperial. When I got back from Europe in 1982, I decided that a smaller, slimmer knife would be more in keeping with my new geek career. I switched to a small Gerber Silver Knight, which was my EDC for the next 25 years.

So, for about 45 years I carried mostly just one knife at a time (except for brief camping excursions, periods of deck work on ships, and the like).

Then, in 2002, with the initiation of our plan to relocate from Las Vegas to the Tahoe/Reno/Carson City area, my wife and I made a commitment to spend more time outdoors, going camping, being tourists, and generally getting out of the house.

Camping. Hiking. Uh, wait, I used to carry a sheath knife when I was camping, but the ones I carried are no longer made, so I guess I need to discover what's out there and try a few things.

It became a kind of my obsession primary research project.

I have pretty much discovered what works well for me, and that would have been the end of that, but in late 2006 I found The High Road, and eventually I started paying attention to what sm and hso were writing, and . . . it turned out I had more evaluating to do.

Well, damn.

So many knives, so little time.

It was no longer enough to try them out one at a time. I started carrying two, then three, then four.

The Leatherman became part of my daily outfit because of my geek job. The "right front pocket" knife changes every few weeks. The "pinkie finger" knife in the glove changes every few weeks. The belt knife rides in a nylon case (horizontal) and every few weeks I try a different full-sized knife there.

As a consequence, I've learned:

Large knives -- over four inches of blade -- don't really work well for me in most EDC contexts.
Medium and small knives work pretty well for me.
You can prepare a whole meal with a good pocket knife.
Swedish Mora knives and Finnish puukko knives are awesome. They are my default fixed blade.
I really like the sod buster pattern. Sodbusters rock.
The Normark (EKA) folding knives are excellent pieces. They, too, rock.
Case XX knives (and slipjoints in general) are happy knives and I will always have one.
Buck Knives is a good company. They make good stuff and they stand behind it all.
I love Wharncliffe blades. I really, really want to get a classic Wharncliffe whittler.
Leatherman multi-tools are terribly useful gadgets.
Streamlight makes a really good light. That's a keeper.
Kershaw makes quite well-designed hardware, and I'll be keeping them around.
A generic SAK is a good thing to have.
Bowie knives kinda suck. Did I mention that large knives don't work well for me?
A hatchet solves the "must have large knife" problem.
Chinese knives are -- generally -- not ready for prime time. But they're getting there.
I need knives with a more robust grip due to issues with one of my knuckles.
I don't much care for American Tanto.
I don't much care for asymmetrical grinds (though I have a couple of keepers).
I really like Scandinavian knife designs. Simple stuff that just works.
I don't much care for serrated edges.
A really sharp knife is safer than a dull one.
A fillet knife makes a good general purpose kitchen knife.
The stockman is one of my favorite -- possibly overall favorite -- slipjoint patterns.
A knife is a terrible thing to waste.

Which, really, just scratches the surface. I have very little exposure to the better makes of knives. No Spyderco, Benchmade, CRKT, Chris Reeves, and so on. And, frankly, I'm a little afraid to go there. I might never make it back.

I've found a small circle of reasonably priced, simply designed, effective knives that work well for me.

I'm glad I found something that worked well before I had to test-drive a Sebenza.

I'm still refining my choices, so I still carry more than I "need" while that's going on.

I will, eventually, cut back to just two. Or three.

but in late 2006 I found The High Road, and eventually I started paying attention to what sm and hso were writing, and . . . it turned out I had more evaluating to do.

We just passing forward is all.

Oh, hso should always be mentioned first, he is more hansdomer , smarter and he has that really neat daughter.

I ain't nobody, just a dumb old southern boy passing on what little I have experienced and observed for little over 50 years I have been around.

I am running around with a Vic Classic, handkerchief, 'cut nail' for sure and just add a simple gun, keys, ID and the like.

I have caused a certain agency to go into total conniption fit mode, complete with cursing, spittle, hands on guns, and supervisors being called and other wonderous and fun things.
They even called the dawgs up...

I walked in with my DL number written on a index card and that was it.

This totally blows all protocol of a person having to empty pockets and go through metal detectors.

"You have to have an ID!!!".
"I do, punch in that DL number and you will see my picture and info you want."

You know that agency never has sent me my Civil Disobedience Award with the Minimalist Merit Award attached.

Just me, still I don't think some folks are cut out for some jobs with some agencies.

Nothing special, really.

Not a gun belt or anything like that.

It's an ordinary Fossil black men's plaited leather belt.

Like this:

That one, and the Dockers version of the same idea seem to do well for me.

I really like the sod buster pattern. Sodbusters rock.

The Jr. is literally my PERFECT edc as far as I can tell. Simplicity seems to result in much more versatility than a complex design!

I use it in food prep, the garden, opening packages, trimming clothing that is fraying, scraping stuff off my shoes, killing cockroaches (yuck, I know) and other stuff I can't think of...and it just won't quit cutting. Haven't sharpened it in...gasp...two weeks!!! I did sharpen it every day because it was so easy, but I ended up feeling like the tradeoff of having 90% scary-sharp and lasting longer was worth it.

Right Rear: Wallet with $0, loose change.

Left Rear: Empty

Right Front: Apartment keys

Left Front: All other keys, with nail clippers attached. Nail clippers also has bottle opener, can opener & nail cleaner inside of it. That gets used a lot more than I thought it would.

Left thigh pocket: $0.99 flashlight, runs on 3 AAA's, has 9 LED's. It's extremely bright, and compact, maybe the size of a roll of Lifesaver's.

Right thigh pocket: CRKT M16-10Z Carson Design, half-serrated with Tanto point. Gets used A LOT, both at work & at home.

Bandana, and pack of gum, and a couple Band-aid's switch pockets.

What is a 'cut nail'? is it a nailclippers or is it code for some cool gadget that I have to send away $2 and 10 box tops for? :D

I want to put together a small pocket kit, just have to decide what's useful to me in urban environment.

Right now, no pockets in my running shorts.

Normal pocket litter includes one LG cellphone, one generic pen, two Kershaw folding knives (actually carried in my waistband), a wallet with a few handy things, a 4gb SanDisk flash drive with a bunch of "networking" tools, a Prometheus cigar torch, and a set of nail clippers.

Briefcase litter includes a bunch of computer tools, a Digilight (R.I.P.), a Leatherman Wave, one red and one white Photon Freedom microloght, and my keys. Carrying a man-purse really opens up one's options for daily carry... :D

http://www.sizes.com/tools/nails.htm

Special types

Cut nails

Most nails made today are wire nails, machine-made from mild steel wire and more or less round. In earlier times the cut nail was more common. Cut nails, which are still made, are cut from a steel or iron plate and so have a rectangular cross section. In most fields they are now a specialty item prized for their quaint appearance. They are not inferior to wire nails, however; in fact their holding power is about 1.5 times greater than that of a wire nail of the same length–even more in end grain–but they are more expensive to manufacture.

I am unable to find a good picture of these "cut nails" with the various sizes listed, sorry.

Growing up everyone carried a nail, a couple of Strike-Anywhere kitchen matches and some other simple, everyday items.

"Cut Nails" were the nails I grew up with in my locale down here in the South.
I get bigger and discover all over the USA, other folks grew up doing the same thing - preferring the "cut nail".

When a structure would catch on fire, or be destroyed by tornado, materials would be sorted through and saved. Brick, stones, hinges ... nails.

Now most of the time, "cut nails" were left as they come. Just "bone stock and rough".
These are easy to file to shapes such as screwdrivers...

-Strike a Fire Steel and toss sparks to make a fire.
-Lose a bolt handle on a rifle or shotgun, and use can use a Cut Nail, to run the bolt.

Repeat: Lose a bolt handle off a shotgun.

Oh I have seen duck hunters lose a bolt handle off say a 1100, other types of hunting too, like up in tree stand using slugs for deer, and that handle fall out and into vegetation below.

Now I come up, having a spare bolt handle for Win SX1 , Rem 1100s and the like.
I also come up carrying a "cut nail".

So we had spares of these for those that did not know.

Recall, I had some interesting Mentors and Elders.

Ya'll call it 3 Gun and shoot Stages.
I was doing this, before all this come to be.
Except, mine were different, as there was no start buzzer, and "set ups" were based on real life stuff.
Meaning actually look at Window Jone's needs and come up with needs to fit situations she might have, being as there was no 911 and the Sheriff Deputy might be on the other side of his zone he/she worked.

Mentors would have 1100s for instance with the bolt gone, to replicate them getting lost in getting out of a closet, or when going down a bumpy road in a truck running to Widow Jone's, that bolt getting lost, ...

Clint says today what I heard coming up - "Learn to run the gun you got!"

So a pocket knife would fit that bolt handle hole, so would a "cut nail".

Not long ago we shot some Defensive Shotgun "set ups" and the bolt handles were removed on purpose...
Much to the surprise of the shooters...
One shooter used a Cut Nail, another her Case Slimline Trapper.
One shooter could not get her "tactical" knife to fit into that bolt hole.
The other two shooters were done with the "set up" before the one with the tactical knife could get the gun running...it took me giving her a cut nail to use.

Restrooms at Fillin' Stations in the old days, were often outside. The door only had a simple "latch" to keep it secure once one was inside.

Sometimes that "latch bolt" was missing and a person using the restroom, especially a lady, could simply slip that nail into where the latch bolt went and secure the door.
Door stops, and even a simple clothespin works for a door wedge too.

Kids are going to get a knot in a shoe, you can bet the farm on it.
Kids have a talent for getting a knot in daddy's boots, when they help get them boots off too.
Nails assist in undoing knots.

Small Key Chain screwdrivers called "4-Ways" were popular with folks and a Cut Nail, afforded one a bit more leverage.

Knob busts off a Kerosene lantern or Oil Lamp and again a nail would allow one to adjust the wick...

Pull cord on a lawnmower, chain saw and one could just tie the cord to the nail and go on...

Smushed fingers in car doors and tail gates?
How many of you got fingers caught in a vehicle door, or truck tail gate as a kid?
Did you ever run up to help mom unload groceries, or greet daddy and either get their fingers caught, yours, or those of brother or sister?

Mentors taught me a trick I still use.
Mentor had cleaned out the dust from his hinges on his truck and since they were squeaking, he was going to lube them.
I am just a little kid, and run to see and help.
Well I hit that door and said "hi" while his fingers and hands were in where the hinges were.
The door did not shut!
He had stuck a cut nail so it would not close.

He said one time the wind was blowing, and a cut nail kept his daddy's finger from getting pinched.

Then he showed me how to do that on a tail gate, so a kid playing with a tail gate - could not shut the tail gate to latch and have fingers stuck.
Oh they might get pinched, still the tail gate would not be latched and cause more serious problems.

We got tactical this and operator that and torx head something-or anothers...

Cut Nails still got a place in my pocket.

Mine are ~ 3 1/2" and 2 1/4" long...

Well surely I ain't the last curmudgeon to still carry one on person.
Plus I always kept/keep on in range bags , in the vehicle, office desk, with tools...

Art I bet has one near, and one in his truck.

I also bet he has scored a pc of metal, wood , and drywall with a cut nail, instead of a pencil a time or three.

Old Fuff I bet has used one to undo a lanyard on a handgun frame more than once...

How handy?
I used one to trip the fire alarm back in the day.
This style was the one with a glass tube and it was faster to poke out the glass cover, and pry the glass to break, as I had a kid in arms and we all were walking swiftly out the door - and I tripped the fire alarm as we headed out that way.
Cut Nail was in my shirt pocket...

Yesterday was more interesting. Key rings on my Carbiner hold a 2gb thumbdrive, the key to my truck w/ a microlight Photon. A streamlite cuffmate. The keys to my apartment, moms, and GFriends Houses and vehicles, assorted grocery discout cards, library card and a sharpened, uncut toyota key for SHTF. The carbiner itself makes a pretty good knuckle duster, and makes the ring long enough to tuck into my right rear pocket along w/ my wallet. In there is a Swiss Card. in my waistband is my Spyderco native. Right front is my change and assorted nonsense I pickup in the course of the day. Watchpocket, Jeep lighter. Think short fat Bic. this one still lights after more than 5 years. Left front is my smokes and gum, and usually my cell. Thats everyday carry. Yesterday was a range day so I was carrying my Franken1911 in a galaco pancake holster @my right kidney, and my cell in its pouch on my right hip. A StarBM in a cheapo LH iwb just left of my spine, w/ a spare mag behind my wallet. on my left hip were two spare 8rd 1911 mags, my Multiplier and mini maglite in their pouch. Inside left ankle was my Mod60 S&W, and i was weating my BatesLite Steeltoes. I wont get into the Rifle stuff. :)

Yeah, it had a rough edge after sitting on a shelf in a feed store for five years, getting manhandled and molested by people who, while they would really have liked to take it home, blanched at the original $73 price tag. Half a decade later, marked down to $32, I brushed the dust off the gift tin and said, "hey, why don't you come home with me?"

A few licks with a diamond steel, a drop of oil, a good wipe down, and into the pocket.

Quite well behaved, actually. It's a real Deere.

While I do like gadgets and my pics can be interpreted in many ways....Trust me I am NO goof ball in the real world and I would NEVER carry such a useless weapon as a spring powered blade.

I did carrry 3 guns at times on my person...Always the issue glock and 1 other approved gun and at rare times a 3rd "personal " LDE "last ditch effort " weapon.

I also will say a impact weapon of some type has come in handy over the years....it was overall a limited use item.

That said ..I am almost free and on to a simpler life.
