Going wheelgun shopping...

I am starting the search for a good carry Revolver tomarrow or saturday. :D

Why you might ask, well I like them a lot and I shoot them better then Autoloaders. I am not going to get a snubnose as I prefer at least a 3' barrel. (not saying a snub is out of the question in the future.)

I will be looking for these types

Sp101 (.357 or .327)
GP100
S&W K frame

Any others I should be looking at?

No one in this subforum is asking why, aside from the errant drive by Glocker.
We know why.

Add J-frames into your list.

I did that myself today. I picked up a 4" nickel model 19 in the box for $300.:D

Stick with a 357...No 38's only or 327's.
357 ammo is cheap and easy to find and you can shoot 38's out of a 357 if you want. 327 is too new to invest in and is not as easy to find as 357 ammo.

:what: Oh my. That IWB holster must be a sight. How will you explain your stiff leg to people? :uhoh:

Sorry, but someone was bound to do it. ;):D

One of the sweetest shooting revovlers I've ever had the pleasure. Probably get one used for a decent price. Their stainless model is the 67 I think.

S&W 686+ with 3" barrel.

The best EVER is the new Lew Horton "new" Registered Magnum with 3.5" barrel.

Hehe, helps when your limping due to a bad back ;)

and while I am unsure on how I will carry, I never liked IWB carry, as it has to be the most uncomfortable carry for someone of my build. I am aiming for 2.5-3 inch barrel, If I get a K-frame sized revolver, It will be my winter carry, and get something smaller for the hot summers.

I suggest the SP101 in .357, with a 3" barrel and DAO. The trigger probably won't be the greatest out of the box, but they're easy to smooth up and a nine pound DA isn't hard to achieve.

If you're more interesting in a K frame S&W, you've got four basic choices--M13, M65, M19, and M66. The 13 and 65 are a little harder to find, but are more plentiful in the 3" barrel length than the other two. Most of what you'll find with the 19 and 66 will be 2.5" unless you're willing to pay $800+ for one in 3". My 2.5" M66 has a nine pound DA after a little polishing and changing the rebound spring.

J frames aren't my thing, and IMO, a J frame .357 with concealment grips on it would be murder to shoot. The trigger won't ever be the equal of the K frame, and I actually prefer the trigger on my SP101 over a tuned J frame. The J frames can be had in lightweight versions if weight is an issue.

Don't forget the S&W model 60. In particular, I'd suggest looking at the 3" barrel model which has adjustable sights. Since it's all stainless steel, the weight helps if you want to shoot .357, although you probably wouldn't want to make this a steady diet. You would be pleasantly surprised at the accuracy of this gun at the range.

And just to make it harder don't forget the 386 night guard. It gives the strengths of the L frame but it's lighter than my 66 and you get 7 rounds of 357.

Any K-frame would be a great choice. I like my Model 66 2.5" and LOVE my Model 15 4".

My choice is pocket carry. Below are my 2.5" L-frame AirLite 296 (5-shot .44 Special), which will fit ~75% of my britches' front pockets and my 1.88" J-frame 642 (5-shot .38 Spcl - see 'The 642 Club' threads!). Below them you'll see what they look like in a Robert Mika pocket holster - a great value. The 642 will fit all of my pants - and, believe me, with Remington R38S12 +P 158gr LHPSWCs, the old FBI load, I don't feel 'under-gunned'.

Ok folks!

Going to the regional Gun Mecca (hyatts) tomarrow to go shopping.

look over used S&W in .38 special, .357, and .44 special to see what they have.

If they don't have those, look over the Sp101s in .357s and .327s.

Wish me luck,

And why not? There are a lot of really sweet .38 spl revolvers. Magnum power is not always wanted and seldom really needed.

Keep you're eyes open for 2.75" or the much rarer 3" Ruger Security/Speed/Service Six. They are nearly as strong as a GP100 or 686, but they are only a tad beefier than a S&W K Frame. And they are usually cheaper as well. I'd like to pick up one of these myself sometime next year.

I agree. I've not gotten to the point where I shoot 357 consistently as well as 38. Plus there is something classy about a mechanically solid, but well worn 3" Model 10.

Drgong

I am assuming they will not have a Speed/Security Six, if they do, I will be drooling, as that is a gun I want one day.

I have no problem with .38 special, Heck, if I buy a Kframe S&W i will be shooting .38 Sp. out of it.

Basicly I am sticking to S&W and Ruger (ok, Colt, but I doubt I will see one of those) I heard Rossi is ok, but I can afford the others, and this may very well be a carry gun.

Of course, if anyone wants to donate a nice, 2.75-4 inch Colt Python to a good home, let me know :neener:

The shop I going to is pricy, but has a great layaway policy, if I see something I want, I put it on layway, as I will have to get another bit of state paperwork. :cuss:

yup!

Take a look at a S&W Model 36 with a 3" barrel. It's built on a snubby J-frame, so it's easy to conceal. That extra inch of barrel length makes it a lot easier to handle and shoot, though. Also gives the bullets a little more oomph, which is usually a good thing.

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by the GP100. Ruger has really come far in these last few years. The new grips on it make it a pleasure to shoot. Almost no felt recoil when shooting 38's. Plus you could use the extra money to buy more ammo.

Diligence pays off. A month or two back found me oogling this LNIB 4" 64-8, made 5/05, a security company un-issued trade-in for sale in the local pusher's used case for $309 + s/t. I bought it as a 'house gun', as I had been looking for a fair 4" 10... it came with the usual Uncle Mike's squared Combats, which I replaced for a while with the non-fg Ahrends. Then I remembered it was destined for the bedside - and back on with the rubber grips. It is a fun piece to plink with, however - and easier to clean than a 10.

You'll love that 15 - a good one is getting much harder to find these days. Diligence pays off!

Yes, It is a very very good 15, as i said I could belive that it was shot only 6 times, not quite NIB but not that far off. I am quite happy to find it as it should be a great gun. I need to get a good oil rag setup to keep the bluing in good shape.

PS - good job on finding that gun :)

I think the plan for me at least is carry this in the winter when I sportcoat/jacket is not out of place. I will look at something like the SP101 with .38s for summer carry, but that is down the road.

Why is it all the guns that S&W makes that I like are the discontinued models? I will get it in two weeks when I am back down in the charlotte area with the state paperwork in hand.

I think I will be using speedloaders with this, which brand of speedloaders do people recommend for use in the model 15?

Anyways, I am justifying my purchases now by saying I am collecting revolvers. ;)

With a 15, you can adjust the rear sight for ammo changes. Mine is 'on the money' windage-wise, but low in elevation at 12-25yd with all of my homebrews. It's 'on' at 25yd with the Remington R38S12 158gr LHPSWC +P - but, then, it states '.38 S&W SPL +P' on the barrel. Yeah, a 67 - or a 15 - would make a far better plinker! Still, for a HD piece, it's perfect.

BTW, the only '15', or 15-variant, available in years now is the new 'Night Guard' series, the 315NG (S&W SKU #163425 - MSRP $932). It's a 2.5" Sc-Al alloy frame/SS cylinder 24 oz revolver with a C&S 'Extreme Duty fixed' rear sight and Tritium front sight. Yeah, you got a far better revolver, in my never very humble opinion! Congratulations - and a call to S&W (800-331-0452) with the S/N will reveal whether or not it is +P rated.

Stainz

PS Pick up an HKS #10 speedloader or two - and practice reloading with your eyes closed - and don't close that loaded cylinder with your eyes closed - be safe!

I think you will be very happy with the Model 15. I ignored them for years when you could buy one for a pittence. Finally bought on last year and I have been pleased with it.

It doesn't get shot much, but it is available when I have the whim to shoot it.
