Would this be feasible or should I continue my search for a bigger range. Im testing 308 and 223 and maybe some 38 sp and 45acp and then maybe some 22 but I really want to test my 308. It sucks being young and living in the middle of a city.

be sure and post where you are located, someone here may know of a range in your area.

Im in the gainesville, ga area and was thinking of going to a range in oakwood. They only have a 40 yd indoor range.

The Department of Natural Resources may have an outdoor range.
Here in SC, there are 5-6 spread out in the state.

I know of a dnr range around here but unfortunately its around 1 hr away and this one is around 20 min. I have to make my time and ammo worthwhile to go to the other one as gas is expensive.

.223 & .308 won't tell you much at 40 yds. Assuming you are using a scope with a 100yd zero it will hit between 1/2 and 3/8'' low at 40 yards. Grouping won't be much more than a one raggedy hole. Take the rifles to the 100yd range.

Many indoor ranges do not allow rifles, as they have a tendancy to destroy the backstops. I do not think 40 yrds for rifle is going to show much, but if you just have to shoot, call in advance to make sure they will allow rifles.

It's my understanding that there are a couple of rifle ranges in the Gainesville area. If you don't make contact, drive north. Lake City has some ranges, also don't forget you can go out in the country and talk to landowners. Many will allow you to shoot on their land if you clean up behind your activities.
In the South, we are fortunate- if you just look around, you can find another shooter who will help.

Google it and you might be surprised what you find. Lots of ranges and shooting clubs in your area. A young and resourceful person might want to call these places looking for a job and who knows what could happen.

i'm gonna echo oldgold here - 40 yards isn't gonna tell you much. you could test feeding and reliability of your ammo, i suppose, but you won't learn enough about your ammo, gun, and skills to make it worth the effort.
you're really going to want access to at least 100 yards, 200 is better, and 300 is ideal in my mind.

There is a gun club real close to Gainesville, off Hwy 60 if I remember right. Do some checking at the next Gainesville gun show and you should be able to get the name and exact location.
If you can't find out it's name, pm me and I'll call my buddy who's a member and get some more information for you.
Regards,
Dave
