opinions on a 9mm pistol...

Well that new-gun bug is bitting me again, thus my search for another pistol has begun.
I want mainly a gun for plinking at the moment, though once I am able to get a CCW(2 and a half more years :() it *might* be used for that.
BTW the only pistol I currently have is a Glock 22, and I want a 9mm for two reasons 1) cheaper plinking ammo 2) less recoil(already not a great shot by a wide margin so I don't need a compact gun w/alot of recoil).
The range in my area does not rent a very wide variety of pistols so that isn't really an option...
So I'm just looking for thoughts from owners of the stated pistols.
thx

Why not consider another Glock? You are already familiar with the operation, so it would be VERY easy to adapt to the new firearm.
I am thinking about a multiple firearm purchase in the future, and I will buy similar guns just for the purpose of being comfortable with either one in ANY situation. I am considering the Glock 17 and 21.
Just my opinion.

Of the two options, I'd go Sig or Beretta, since you already have a plastic gun. I think you'll appreciate the all metal construction of the other two. For the HK, I'd go full size as the hicap mags are only $60.
If you just want to be cheap and shoot 9mm, buy a 9mm adapter barrel and some mags for the G22. Several companies are making aftermarket barrels that fit and function in the .40 Glocks.
The other option is getting a .22, either Ciener adapter for the Glock or a Ruger or something. Talk about cheap plinking.
I'm sure you about to get inundated with CZ, Taurus, Walther, Ruger, etc suggestions, but there is nothing wrong with the 3 you're considering. They are among the elite of modern pistols. Pick any one and you've chosen well.

Reasoning for not going taurus or another "cheaper" gun, is I would like to keep it for a rather long period of time- and I have not heard as good of things about the "less expensive" brands- as would be expected.
I meant to put a G19 on the list, but did neglect it- I suppose it would be easier to adapt to(but I guess I'm in that phase of just enjoying different types of guns as opposed to more of the same- which is also why I have not just purchased a different barrel)
thx for suggestions :)

Variety is the spice of life. Get something different.
I recommend the SigSauer.
In 9mm, you may also want to consider the P226.

I like the Sig P228 better than the P229 in 9mm; the P229 is better in .40 S&W and .357 Sig. I also like the HK USP 9c; some excellent choices here.

I would go with a SIG.
Actually, I would go with a CZ-75 variant of some sort, but that wasn't on the list.
What is not to like in a $300 9mm that is accurate, dead reliable, has good customer service behind it and available full cap mags that you don't have to sell a kidney to afford?

Browning High-Power Mk III.
My wife has one, and she told me that if I don't stop stealing it from her to shoot at the range, she's gonna shoot me with it.

The greatest 9mm ever made, the Browning Hi-Power has my vote of confidence.
All others pale in comparison.

HK USP9c
Built like a tank, reeks with German uber-engineering, cocked and locked carry, +P+ rated, high resale value, better looking of the three, IMHO :D
That said, the other two are also quality guns. I wouldn't feel outgunned with either... ;)

CZ-75.
One of the finest pistols out there, period.

I voted for the Sig 229...but like a couple of people have said..look at CZ.
The PCR is the same weight/dimension/capacity as the 229 and has the same controls and trigger style. Very very nice guns.

229 or 226......i would go w/ the 229 if you were thinking of using it for CCW, and a 226 for range shooting.....either way, you can't go wrong w/ a Sig.

MK III Hi Power ;)
But of the choices listed, I voted Sig. Then I could sell it and get a Hi Power ;););)
Did I say Hi Power ?? MKIII, or possibly a GP Comp. Or a Standard blued version. Or a Practical. Or a T series would be fun too. Or........

You should look at the Steyr M9 from CDNN. Its exceptionally low bore axis will help with recoil reduction and its traditionally rifled barrel means you can shoot lead (unlike your Glock). Lots and lots of other good things about this pistol. Truly a quality piece for under $300 (don't let the price fool you). Great plinker, too!

Of the answers in the poll, I would go with the USP.
However, you should know that you are really cheating yourself by ruling out the many great 9mm pistols out there.
I highly recommend you check out the CZ-75 and HiPower. The CZ is a major steal, and both the CZ and the HP have exceptional reputations for reliability. Both are beautiful pistols (my opinion). HP mags can be had for less than 20 bucks in any capacity. I got 2 17-rounders for 19 bucks a pop from CDNN, and the thing just won't stop.
What about a Beretta 92 (or Taurus 92), or a Ruger P-89 or P-95? Looked at a Baby Eagle? Don't sell yourself short, a decision like this isn't one to be made frivolously. ;)
I have to agree with WonderNine, the BHP has got to be the best 9mm ever made.
Good luck with your purchase. It's also kind of comforting to know that there's someone here younger than me! Keep your powder dry, buddy.

very interesting comments
It seems that perhaps you can get more than what you pay for in some cases ie CZ or hi-power?
Or are HK's etc too $ for what they are...
I'll have to look into some of the other optinos listed...
I won't be able to buy it for another month so at least I have plenty of time to research. :)

Of the above, I'd pick the USP but that's just me. Gotta ask yourself:
1. Do you like your Glock? If so, why not a Glock 19?
2. USP, will you train to always swipe that safety off and would you want to carry C&L? If you constantly shoot your Glock 22 on the range but carry the USP, will you confuse yourself with two different manual of arms?
Or are HK's etc too $ for what they are...
Yes, they are expensive, but so are movie tickets, coffee and dining out....but people still do it because they like it. It's a matter of how much it matters to you. The $200 difference in a gun is tiny compared to how much I spend a year on training and ammunition....

Excellent point!
Ridgeway, in the end, it's up to you what you will be shooting, and perhaps, carrying. I don't want to try to influence you to a certain gun, I'm just trying to notify you of a few options that may be worth looking into before you decide what's best for you.
As long as you get a quality pistol that fits you, you'll be happy. The catch is, only you can decided what that pistol is.

Of the pistols listed, the Sig is the best choice. A 9mm Glock of some kind would give you the same handling characteristics and controls as your Glock 22. Read the signature :).

Of the choices, I'd recommend the USP compact.
I just sold my 229 in .40/357SIG, and couldn't be happier.
I'm wondering why you didn't consider the 228?
My 228 is twice the gun as my 229 was.
But my USP compact is the one I would recommend.
In order for a gun to beat it in the accuracy department, I have to equip it with optics or a red dot.
My 228 is no slouch when it comes to accuracy, but the edge in engineering goes to the H&K.

I'll have to look how the 228 differs from the 229...
So many choices to choose from. :)
are high cap mags around the same price as glock mags for most guns mentioned? ie sig, hk, beretta...I think someone mentioned cz mags on only $20...?

Wise choice, I can't hink of better 9mm auto for the money. Of course there are P7M8 and Sig P210, but they are slightly more difficult to get. Make sure you get preban MecGar magazines to go with your P228.
Ridgeway
September 8, 2003, 12:07 PM
Not sure if they are MecGar(thats a brand I assume?), but included with it I did get 2 high cap mags in addition to the 2 factory mags
(also got hogue[sp?] grips included)
:)

September 8, 2003, 12:37 PM
FWIW, I can only use Hogue's on single stacks (autos); otherwise they just make the grip too big for me. A lot of folks like the P228, it should do fine for you.
Ridgeway
September 8, 2003, 03:33 PM
also included were the original grips so I can switch back if I find it to be too big...can't wait to hit the range & try it out :)

I have a SIG 239, it's a 357 and I have a 40 barrel that is in the gun most of the time. If you are going to CCW in the future, the 239 in 9mm should work fine. I also have a Kahr K9, a little smaller and thinner than the 239 but a sweet shooter that's excellent for CCW. I love my Glock 19 also, but the Kahr is on my hip most of the time. Oops, almost forgot the Glock 26, very nice little gun that can be carried any way you want. I just like the smaller guns, they work for me.
