Need something that will keep gun in place and mud out of gun. (Last time I asked, got suggestions for lots of open-bottom models, not suited for hiking & climbing IMHO).

I might be talked into expensive, but why should a flap holster be expensive

If nylon works look around for a Bianchi UM84R; it is a modified design of the M12 military holster for a 4" medium of large frame DA revolver. I have one and like it very much.

I have an old Uncle Mikes nylon Sidekick holster with a full velco attached snap closure flap. It really protects my 4" .357 magnum revolver from rain and bush crud.

For 80 or so you can find a Nagant Holster, which is a great old fashoned miltary flap for a 4'' double action revolver

and you get a gun with it too, really great deal ;)

I bought one off ebay, don't even know the brand. It works great, ballistic nylon. I gave about 10 bucks plus shipping. I didn't want leather, not for rough use. And, the acids in leather that are used to tan aren't good for a gun's finish and will leach out when wet, especially. I wanted nylon.

I do have a Makarov flap holster that works great with my little 3" M68 Rossi which I tote afield every now and then. It's light and accurate and though I would rather have a .357 along many times, often the .38 is enough. That holster cost me 8 bucks and it even has a magazine flap that will hold a speed strip full of wadcutter loads. :D

Well, it's going to get wet for sure (unless I plan on hiking only in the mall). Guess I should rethink this.

UM84R

Looks interesting.

I have a Bianchi UM 84R and like it very much. If it gets wet or dirty I simply wash it off (the dirt doesn't soak in) and use the flap to hang it over a line to dry. You can wear it on either the left or right side, and remove the flap when you don't want it. You can even convert it to a shoulder holster using an optional harness. They are much better made then the cheapest ones, and worth the extra cost. Also consider getting a matching belt made from the same material.

Leather holsters - at least good ones - are expensive because they are for the most part custom made these days. For reasons I don't fully understand they're seems to be little demand.

That UM84 is a nice holster. My 4" GP-100 fits perfectly in it and it is just the thing for a hefty gun like that. It might be just a bit large for a K frame sized gun.

The old military flap holster for the .38, used right up through Vietnam, is good but sometimes a little hard to find. It fits Ruger "Sixes" with both fixed and adjustable sights, and fixed sighted K frames, but not Ks with adjustables. There are reproductions available.

Not cheap, but not really expensive either, and a few hiker customers have had nothing but good to say about the Safepacker from The Wilderness.
