Are holsters available that use common items such as cell phones to camouflage the fact that it is also carrying a gun?

NAA mini revolvers can be carried in a belt buckle.

Hmmm. I'm thinking something more along the line of something to carry a J or K frame S&W.

I have an Anderson Enterprises blue fanny pack that can house my glock and a spare mag - it also works well hiding the gun in the car door on long trips; while not a holster, it does provide another option, especially since it isn't tactical black, it doesn't scream "gun"

IMHO, J-frames belong in a pocket, in a pocket holster. If it's cool enough for me to wear a cover garment, I carry a .357 K-frame or a .40 SIG in a belt holster.

Seems like I saw someone is making a holster that uses a pager or cell phone to disguise the belt attachment.
Ah yes, it's called "Pager Pal" and it's a pancake type IWB.

I really don't like the idea behind pager pal because what if during your draw the gun gets caught in your pants?

Indifferent
August 17, 2008, 11:11 PM
How about taking a blank plastic box, put two small air lines from a fish tank into your pants. Put the Jframe in there, if you need it, just pop the box open and its there. Look like a Medical Device that most wouldn't question. Just an idea I had when I saw a rail thin girl walking down the beach with this medical device on her hip.

I don't have a permit in San Ramon. This question came up in a conversation with friends in Idaho and Oregon.

Something like a PDA case, modified to hold the gun upright, could accommodate a lightweight snubnose revolver or a small pistol. A cell phone case is too small for anything but perhaps a mini-revolver or a Downsizer, neither of which are practical sidearms.

Don't be so sure about that CB.

The idea is that some common item would help break up the outline to make the gun easier to carry concealed with a greater variety of clothing.

A friend had a "pager pal" for a while. Said it worked well but didnt last long. I think they've updated to a "phone pal" type of thingy, but I hear it's still fragile plastic.

You do realize most of the people on this forum have no idea what a head shop is. I haven't heard someone talk about a head shop in many many years.... (thanks for the flashback)

Come to Austin sometime! We still have plenty! Plenty of peace loving green freaks carrying fanny packs!

I pack in a fanny once in a while but my wife hates it.

No if I were British that sentence would take on a whole nuther meaning :D

Big Boomer,
I can say with some certainty the so called head shops of today are nothing like the head shops of the early 70's.... (if I can remember correctly hehehe)

Perhaps what you are looking for is something like the "safepacker"

I saw it at Dillon Precision's site

It looks like a little utility bag but can be worn on your belt. IMO it would look a little geeky but could work in some environments. Then again, I don't know you, maybe you ARE a geek and it will look great with your pocket protector.:neener:

Seriously, it looks like pretty well made. Hopefully it will work.

As far as the shooting cell phone, check out this Snopes story http://www.snopes.com/crime/warnings/cellgun.asp

"No if I were British that sentence would take on a whole nuther meaning "

Yeah. Should have seen my then future Aussie girlfriend/wife's eyes I mentioned something about patting her on the fanny. :what: (How was I to know?)

The Dillon holster looks like it might make for a slow draw, but it is certainly discreet. Probably more so than what is now referred to as a waist pack (REI knows Aussie lingo).

Perhaps what you are looking for is something like the "safepacker"

I have 10 holsters, and unless I am OC, I end up using the safepacker.

Its light as a feather, it sits outside, it protects the gun when I fall (slipped on ice a few years back.) and it doesn't scream "GUN!" when people see me wearing it. Of course, i am usually kilted when wearing it, which probably also doesn't scream "GUN!."

My own anti mother, who works for the DOJ and is not a dumb person, has seen me wear this at least a hundred times, and has never once asked me about it.

I think she figures its a computer case (I am a sysadmin.)

I use a VA Blood Bank fanny pack with a modified shoulder strap from a Laptop bag I use when I am in my wheelchair or out and about in shorts for short trips not requiring the chair. I keep my wallet, keys, SOG Twitch and P-11 in it. In the chair it is in my lap. Standing it is right under my right hand.

Guess I am the odd man out here. I don't want anyone to associate me with either of those images. Let alone give them money.

I do just the opposite and wear my "peace through superior firepower" tee shirt to stores like Whole Foods. Drives them nuts but as you would expect, they are too cowardly to comment.

Guy B. Meredith
August 24, 2008, 11:51 AM
This is getting a bit off the original subject, but the mention of the MMM, hippie and superior firepower garb leads me to the thought of disguise through distracting clothing.

For instance, someone trying to absorb the MMM or "peace through superior firepower" message may be distracted from looking at the waistband and that may be good camouflage. I do have two pieces of clothing which might fill that bill.

There is an annual match in this area called the Bay Bridge classic. The proceeds from this match go to Toys for Tots and Toys R Us helps by giving a discount on toys. From this match I have a bright colored polo shirt that show a silhouette of a match shooter in garb and a big Toys for Tots logo. The obvious clash of concepts in the mind of the average person should direct attention away from the CCW.

Hmmm. Maybe we've discovered a whole new industry in gun concealment.

This is an interesting thread.
Not sure where it's going yet,
but I'll ride along for a while.

Guy, are you more interested in pocket carry (for the J-frame)
or OWB/IWB, or shoulder holster, or does it matter?

I think those options are going to draw different suggestions.

I also think that your quote above opens another dimension to this thread.

Personally, I would consider waist carry. That was the direction of the conversation that spurred this question in the first place.

Shoulder carry would be interesting in light clothing.

I carry enough STUFF in my pockets that disguising a pocket carry outline would be no problem. Sorting through the contents to find what I want might be, though.

It works good for motorcycling and bicycling.

I need to find something similar but larger for my G27 and my 2 inch 357 mag.

I have a Safepacker for my XD 9 that lives in the truck. Just throw it on the seat and no one is the wiser. If you leave the front buckle undone, the draw is very very fast.

I've got one of these for my J Frame (642-2):
http://www.pocketholsters.com/S_W_Taurus_Rossi__Pockert_Wall/s_w_taurus_rossi__pockert_wall.html

I think it works really well for slipping in the back pocket. Added bonus is that it keeps the grip upright unlike some of the pocket holsters I've used.

Here in NM, fanny pack screams GUN. From personal experience, if you need a fanny pack or similar thing, you may just need to rethink the type of weapon you are carrying. After years of trying to adjust my clothing style to my guns, I finally saw-the-light and bought a 642 which rides in my front pocket including jeans. No more fidgeting or adjusting myself all the time, no more slightly-too-much-weight and no more clutching at a jacket or open shirt which also screams GUN here in Sunny and HOT NM. There are those that say "Dress around your gun", but all that does is make you stand out, and I have carried a gun for close to 30 years now and the only answer I have is get the smallest gun that shoots better than mediocre rounds, so for me that's the 642. I think the Kahr PM-9 would also be well suited, as are of course the Kel Tec P3AT and the Ruger LCP. I always found the .38 to be less than what I really wanted to carry, but in the end, the hot weather and comfort dictate for me that this is the best weapon for me.
