Is the .22 LR for real handgunners?

You betcha!
With the price of ammo, I was spending too much money at the range on ammo. It was either reload, or shoot .22. A few weeks ago I stumbled across a MkIII Hunter in the used case. $315.00. Gun was 99%. Maybe a few hundred rounds through her. So, what the hey, I bought the gun and took her home.
First time at the range. Mmmmm. Feels good. Real solid feeling. And the trigger is very nice. First 10 rounds; no malfunctions. Reel the target back. Whoa, it's accurate. Very accurate.
So now I go to the range each week, MkIII in tow. Shoot about 200 rounds and it costs me a few bucks. And I give nothing away as far as challenge. It is easily the most accurate handgun I own. Easily. And that challenges me. I think I understand now about those guys around me with the MkIII's and Buckmark's shooting only .22.

Well you are really a cheap handgunner. :D A real handgunner isn't motivated by ammo cost when shopping for their .22s.

My M17-2 complements my various K frame magnums quite nicely.

.22 handguns?
I think .22 pistols are some of the coolest guns around.
Federal bulk pack + a day at the range = good times!

I like .22's but they aren't very fun when I am looking for a big boom.

Hi Pittspilot,
Of course .22's are for real handgunners! And shame on anyone who tells you different. :fire: I've shot critters with everthing from the .17 HMR to the 500 Mag.
Every caliber has an application, hunting squirels and rabbits with a .17 or a .22 is a lot more challenging than popping em' with a shotgun. If you shoot the big bore's ( .44 Mag, .454 Casull, .445 Super Mag, .460 Smith and .500 Smith..... heck I've hunted with a .308 Winchester in the Encore) and haven't developed good technique with an easier to handle gun, when it comes time to take that kill shot, you can flub it.
Of course there will be those who disagree, but deep down they know its just a whole lot of fun to bang away with a .22 !!!
Just picked up another Mark II with a 5" bull barrel, can't wait to take my wife out target shootin with it. Course its not as pretty as my Medalist..... but she did take a nice doe this past season with her S&W .41 Mag... :what:
Have fun driving tacks with your Hunter !!!

Ya, I love my ruger mk II. It is fun to blast through some ammo for just a few dollars. The gun is accurate enough for me too.

I've got a mark II with 6" bbl, a s&w k frame 22 with 6"bbl, and used to have a woodsman with 6"bbl.
Of those three, the ruger is the least accurate.

Well, they're for me. And I'm a real handgunner, so yes! Six .22s and counting.:D

Yes! Along with the rest of the calibers!

ruger makes a hell of a handgun you can beat the "C$#@" out of pretty much any handgun with it and then go out and shoot it...
the biggest issue i have seen with the mark3 series is the magazine disconnect that extra piece of metal seems to make things difficult :)
but either way congrats im glad you are enjoying yourself

I used to find .22s boring. But with the rising cost of ammo, and a basicly stripped 1911 frame, I thought "WTH, might as well."
I took my old AMT frame, got a few new parts (ambi safety, pin set, grips), and dropped it off at the local smith to have it completed, and I specified a Kimber grip safety (since I have four kimbers, I wanted the .22 to feel the same). He completed the frame with take-out parts and I topped it off with a Ciener conversion.
My intentions were simple: Get a lot of triggertime without going broke. That's it. I had no intention of my Ciener/AMT mutt being a fun pistol. But it had became that by the end of day 1 at the range.
I never realized mow much more fun a rimfire could be until I shot it in one of my preferred platforms. I found it to be so much fun that I built a dedicated rimfire AR15.
Although I dont like glocks, I do own one that gets used as a beater. I'll probably get a conversion for it as well.
I used to turn my nose up at rimfires. Now I know better.

I've got a total of seven 22 handguns, and another half dozen 22 rifles.
Yea. I like it. I liked it before the cost of ammo went up. Actually for about 99% of what I use a rifle or a handgun for, a 22 will do just fine.

Anyone that doesn't own a 22 in some fashion doesn't know what they're missing out on. I love to shoot my H&R 939. More accurate than I am and really fun to take to the range with a couple of bricks for all day shooting.

I absolutely agree. I have the .22 kit for my Kimber. I go to the range and shoot 2 boxes of .45, wincing at the cost. Then I switch out barrels, and shoot .22 until my hand gets tired and I have to shoot left-handed.

You can't be a real handgunner without a quality .22 pistol.

Practice with a .22 involves the same principles of marksmanship as practice with a larger caliber. If you can't hit the target at typical pistol ranges with a .22, you won't hit it with a larger caliber either.
One thing the .22 excells at is destroying delusions of competency. A lousy group fired from a decent quality .22 pistol is manifestly just that: a lousy group. Lousy groups fired from larger caliber pistols are too often rationalized away as "combat accurate."

I can shoot until I am satisfied with 22. I don't do that with 45 because of the cost. So, I bring both. I get my volume from the 22 then finish up with my 45. Makes for a great day.

If not, then I'm not a "real" handgunner. I have 8 of 'em, only three decent ones, really, though they all shoot and a few of 'em are really useful. I mostly shoot my scoped Ruger Mk2 and my Rossi M511 Revolver. Those are two of my "decent" ones, the other is a scoped TC Contender barrel in .22 LR.
I handload and can shoot .45ACP about as cheap as .22, but I still like shooting .22. Don't have to chase down brass, one good thing.

Really? Well, I'll bring you the brass if you can give me 500rds of 45acp for $20

If it weren't for real handgunners, then why is it used in NRA bullseye?
Why does Marvel make conversion for the 1911, BHP and Glocks?

I figure a real handgunner is one who has a nice collection of guns and buys a .22 for the fun of it.

Great score on the Ruger. I have the MK3 Hunter Stainless but unfortunately had to pay full price. It is a joy to shoot. Enjoy your pistol.

A real handgunner would not differentiate between "real handgun" and ".22 handgun". They are both real handguns. I many many more rimfire handguns than I do centerfire handguns. I have 7 .22LR handguns and only 1 centerfire handgun in the Jeep right now...to go to the range after work. I consider myself "real". ;)

Oh, absolutely! It is great fun to take the kids out with the MkII I have. So much so that I am thinking of getting another Ruger so we can have a real plinking gun (no optic sights like I have now). I use my MkII for competition, fun and teaching the kids. I don't think a person can call themselves a handgunner, if they would call themselves that, without having experienced and still using a .22 pistol.
The Doc is out now.
PS, choices, choices, choices - Buckmark, Ruger MkIII, AR-15, Taurus 24/7 S&W M&P. ARG!!!! :banghead: Too many choices, too little pay to get all NOW!!!!

where do you guys find ammo on sale?!(even if its occassional). Only place i could think that would have sales would be a bass pro. But i dont go there often enough to see if they have ammo on sale. And they don't advertise ammo prices on their site. By the way, I live in miami FL.

I recently purchased the Mark III Hunter. Before that, I was using a Ceiner kit in one of my AR's.....and I'm a reloader!!!!

At one time I was selected to shoot on the Australian IPSC team for a level IV match, so I guess I'm a real handgunner. Most of my rifle shooting is with .22lr, and more than half of my pistol shooting is using a .22lr conversion on my Beretta. I have a CZ SP01 on order - with a .22 conversion unit.
So .22lr is for this real handgunner.

Yup. Besides, a big ego gets expensive. My most recent .44 Magnum handloads are probably 15 years old--if not more. I don't ever expect to load--or shoot--any more, either.
Looks like 23 .22LRs here; :what:about 2/3 rifles and the rest handguns.:)

Taking the .22's out is my favorite pastime. When I normally go out to the state land where I shoot I take my 10/22 or marlin 60 and my ruger mk2 and single-six. A box of 500 keeps me going for several hours of plinking and general screwing around. I'm trying to teach myself to quickly fan a SA revolver, why not with the cheapness of the .22lr.
I doubt I could afford to do that with .45 LC or even .38 special.

Have a MKII and a Single-Six. Both are waaaaaayy up on the "Fun Gun" list.
A Lot cheaper than blazing away with the .357 Vaquero or the KP-90/1911's.

My .22's always come with me to the range.
I have a S&W 17-3, a Beretta 71.
They complement my centerfire handguns.

After i purchased this gun i kinda lost interest in all the others. So now im selling my 44mag Blackhawk and 45LC Vaquero. They are just not fun anymore:barf: Still hanging on to my 1911 though.
The real beauty as far as i see it with 22`s is the ability to silence them to the point that you can just drive somewhere remote and fire away.. Without having police helicopters circling over you because someone heard gunfire.
I started out with 22`s, sold them and bought big cf guns.. Now im back on 22`s:o
(All done legally ofcourse)
