Just curious, I have several different whetstones that I have been using for the better part of 40 years, As you may guess, They are starting to show a considerable amount of wear.

My question is "Do you ever, and if so, how, dress an old stone to make it flat again, or do you just replace it?"

It's been many years since I used a natural stone. I love my Eze-lap diamond hones. I've been using the same red diamond home I carry in my wallet for almost ten years now, still good.

But I've been known to use the bottom of a coffee mug on occasion as well. :D

I'm not one of the " real pro's" around here but I know there are special synthetic abrasive blocks that can be used for this purpose. Also if you have a machinist's flat plate or a piece of float glass you can often use sheets of abrasive over these to achieve a flat surface again on your whetstones. With any luck the Tourist or one of the other tinkers will see this post and give you a better answer - or at least a link to something useful.

Yes, the advice you've been given on how to dress a stone is sound. Any smooth flat surface with abrasive adhered to it to flatten the stone will work. Just use a coarse enough grit to get it level and a fine enough grit to not leave any gouges.
