I have an old Kevlar soft concealable bulletproof vest (the common type used by police or security under their uniform shirts -- NOT any military type of armor and NO rifle plates) that I would like to send to a friend in the UK.

Is it okay to do that by just dropping off at the post office and air mailing it over to the UK, or do I have to do something special (for example: fill out any special forms, etc.) before mailing?

 :what:

Thanks...

That's one I've never heard asked before! :) No idea. You might want to check at US Customs (http://www.cbp.gov/) and see what they have to say about it.

I'd wrap it in a towel or two and take it to U.P.S. If I had to declare the contents, I'd simply put down "towels" and let it go at that.

You might want to check with the ATF, too.

I believe gas masks are prevented from being exported without massive paperwork as they are considered items of war, so I wouldnt be suprised if even an old bulletproof vest fell under the same restrictions.

Lying on export paperwork is probably not a good idea.

Might be fine for you to ship, but the recipient in the UK might get in trouble. Check UK laws too which you're at it.

I would venture to guess that bullet proof vests of any kind are now illegal in Orwellian England. Serfs are not allowed to own such things. I can't imagine you'd get in trouble for shipping it, even if it was discovered, but your friend probably will if he gets caught with it by the local magistrate.

there is no law against being in possession of, or wearing, a bulletproof vest in the UK - despite what the usual crop of ignorami might say.

your friend may have to pay some form of duty when the Royal Mail delivers it to his house (this definately applies to items ordered from the US as part of a sale but a gift may not incur such tax). as always, any invoice accompanying the shipment should be clearly labelled as to what is inside.
