I'm not there yet, but I'm at the point my ammo, training, gun purchases and other gun-related stuff is going to cost more than my rent...:uhoh:

But you should see the cars I drive.

Cost more? Probably not.

Worth more? Definately.

My 1992 Ford F150 was $17,000 new, it now has 150,000 miles on it and maybe worth $4000. None of my guns have gone down in value.

Yes for sure. It's probably more a reflection on the utilitarian vehicles I have rather than the value of the guns.

My truck will definately decrease in value. I hope that my guns do not.

Trucks vs. guns ... my trucks have it, but it's a close race.

Well...taking into account that the QuarterBoreMobile 1.0 is about ready to retire, then yes the Arsenal Of Doom™ easily outweighs the truck.

In another month or so when I sign off on the QuarterBoreMobile 2.0, that may be another issue... close though.

The value of my collection exceeds the value of my two cars and home equity combined

Wow. I sincerely hope to achieve this some day. But considering the median cost of a house in the bay area... it's going to take a while.

This sounds like an old Texas story:

"What's the difference between a rich Texan and a poor Texan?"

"Well, when they go huntin' the dog cost more than the shotgun and the pickup put together."

"The rich Texan has a new GMC..."

QuarterBoreGunner,

It's not really that big of a collection. I've only been making house payments on my current house for 11 years. I started buying guns in the '70s. This includes a few machineguns purchased back before the ban jacked the value up. Then came the AW ban which raised the value of several other guns. Besides, Tamara still has me beat. :)

Hkmp5sd- Hmm. An interesting thought. Are we talking 'actual value' or 'present value'. See I bought the 20 or so pre-ban rifles (they're not EVIL, just misunderstood) back in the late 80's and early 90's, and of course after the various bans, they skyrocketed to ridiculous levels...

If we're talking about the actual price I paid for them as opposed to the 'legislated' value... then...

Uh oh.

I need to go shopping.

No, I have a 2003 Ford F250, Super Duty, Turbo Diesel

Although the amount of money that I spend per month on guns, ammo, training, and related expenses exceeds all of my monthly bills (house payment, truck payment, utilities, etc) by 2:1.

Before I bought "Project: Moneypit" any single gun in my collection cost more than the "Beast" did, in either terms of price price paid or current market value. By the time I'm done with "Project: Moneypit" I'll have to spend the GNP of Paraguay to have a gun collection worth more than my El Camino.:D

and something that I try to drill into my kids

I figure I've spent about 3 times on my current vehicles (including my ski boat) what I've spent on guns

but, if I had to sell them today, right now, I could get about as much for the guns as all the others together

good rule of thumb....if the car payment is $400 a month, the car loses almost $400 a month in value

I'm 52, but for anyone young and willing to listen (a very unusual combination), lose the desire to buy the newest, baddest, biggest, fastest, and save your money.

When you trade that car or truck in, all you have are memories and an empty bank account.

God, I sound like my Dad...too bad I figured out too late that he was right

But that's about to change in December. I gotta buy a new car :( or ;) Not sure which!

I hate to get all serious, but there is more value in a vehicle than just what you can sell it for. For example: I live about 70 miles from where I work. I consider my job to be the most important thing in my life. Without that income, I can't do anything else including having a roof over my head. I HAVE to get to work, and I HAVE to get to work all the time. Having transportation that is reliable as possible isn't an option. In addition I need it to get decent fuel economy. Off the job, my choice of vehicle also comes into play. I shoot several times a week. I have my own target stands, I have my own reactive targets etc. IMO, I need a pickup truck to haul this shooting stuff. In season, I like to hunt. I like to have the ability to get an elk or deer home in my own vehicle. I usually have to drive a minimum of several hundred miles and have driven over 1000 miles (each way) to hunt. I feel that between hunting, and my general off road driving, I feel I can easily justify having 4wd. Especially when you consider the fact that you might be over 50 miles from the nearest person if you get stuck. I simply can't get along with some hooptie vehicle. I put over 25,000 miles on a vehicle a year.
I realize this is a kind of light hearted thread, but my life is more than one dimensional. There is more to my life than shooting. All that being said, I certainly spend my fair share on firearms. I am probably not all that far behind the value of my truck in guns.

As an "oldtimer" I remember buying cars"new" for $2700 so I cannot and would
not purchase a new vehicle paying $20,000 plus like many things in our new world it is a ripoff. Having said that guns have some value and they dont fall to
pieces after 6 years so you know where I stand.

jsalcedo

For most of my life I drove $300 to $500 cars because I grew up working on them and wasn't bothered by a roadside breakdown from time to time.

This left money for guns, college, beer, girls etc...

Even when I got married the wife and I still drove very inexpensive cars
and when her new nissan was in the shop there was always an old truck
or dodge dart for her to drive.

When we had our first child that all changed. I was looking for dual stage airbags, crumple zones, child seat, locks, anti-lock brakes.

Most importantly sometthing that won't leave you on the side of the road in 110 degree heat with a 2 year old.

So we bought two new cars and my gun budget flew into the toilet.

With $1000 per month in car payments all it leaves is a small C&R budget
and some room for reloading if I don't eat out, buy new clothes or drink beer.

Small sacrifice for safe kids and a new gun from time to time.

I sincerely cannot wait until my guns are worth more than my cars again.
Only about 25% there right now..

Hmmm...I think I need a bumper sticker on the butt of my PD trade-in $125 Rem 870 that say's, "my other shotgun is a Merkel".

To answer the question though- Yes, I believe the value of my guns exceeded the value of my car this year- with both slightly moving in opposite directions... and neither worth all that much.

Purchase price or current value? Purchase price no, current value yes. I drive inexpensive used cars (I don't believe in car payments) but I don't have a lot tied up in firearms - yet - either.

Since I can easily put 1-3K miles on my car in a month as part of my job (I'm in I/T but I have to drive my own car to various facilities around TN and KY that my company operates) I figure I'm destroying it's value, so I see no point in having a nice one. Current example is a 94 Chevy Corsica for which I paid $4500 cash with 84K miles on it just over 3 years ago. It is now just past 210K miles. It doesn't look like much but it still runs just fine. Prior to that I had a Ford Escort that ran just fine for 260,000 miles. If you do the maintenance they will run ... most of the people I know whose cars die it turns out they didn't keep up on the preventative maintenance.

Total tied up in firearms right now is about $2500. That Corsica isn't worth $2500 currently, I'm quite sure. When I decide to replace it I'll once again buy something 3-5 years old and pay cash for it.

Used to be a definite "my guns cost more than my ride" back when it was a beat-to-crap 1975 Chevy pickup purchased at auction from the Navy. Now the tables have turned since I'm in a Z06 vette. But continued accumulation may yet even things out...

Wow, and I thought I was the only one around here who enjoyed and appreciated fine cars just as much as fine guns. I've been feeling kind of guilty for living in Texas and not driving a truck and carrying a gun. The second part of this has been rectified (I now have my CHL), but trucks are still not my cup of tea. :o Here’s my garage, and obviously I have a lot of shopping (plus one divorce :D ) to go through to bring my total spent on guns up to total spent on cars.

Daniel Flory:
Nice ride there… How do you like it so far? Silver G500 is on my very short list of what to get once lease on my X5 is up. However, I prefer BMWs to MBs because of handling, and up until now the looks. However, with the new direction BMW is headed, that is changing very quickly. Now even new E class (which I personally never liked before) looks much better than new 5 series bimmer.

Nice roadster too… Used to have one of those before trading it in for E46 a few years ago.

Aleko- My wife is jealous of your X5! My C-Class has been quite good to me so far. People rub me about having "just a C-Class"...then I ask them what they drove when they were 21 years old (that daddy didn't buy of course) :D It has been excellent mechanically except for a few very minor issues. For example, the ball joints on the front suspension were a little dry but some lube fixed the squeak. I would agree that the BMWs have a handling and power edge to the MBs. But I don't agree about the E-Class. I like their bodies but the front and rear lamp styling looks horrible IMHO. I've never really liked the E and I probably never will until they revamp their headlamps. Nice house BTW!

Aleko
September 4, 2003, 11:08 PM
Daniel,
I guess you might be right about lights on E. I could never figure out what it is, but something turns me off when looking at E-class (both old and new body). I like C and S exterior a lot, but C is a little too small for my taste, and S is a little too “classy” (I’m in my mid 20s, a little too early for a car of that class). Besides, MB’s handling is not there yet. ML looks too much like a minivan (and drives like one), and has had way too many problems from the very beginning (a couple of my friends made a mistake of buying one). G-class looks…. well, “different”; kind of like H1 – edgy, bulky, a little ugly, but there is something about it that is very appealing. I’ve been bimmer fan for years, but with newer designs (E65 7 series, Z4, now new E60 5 series) – I have a feeling I’m on my last BMWs until (if) they go back to their more traditional (and less controversial) designs.

Currently, I have no car. Most expensive car I ever owned cost me $1000.

Now, I just use my wife's car or my room mate's car, since we work at the same place, it usually works out fine.

What I want is a Lancer Evolution... which would easily be more than my guns... and probably put a stop on all purchases... I won't be able to afford to go out and drive my car anyways!

I'm not saying. Could be.

Two years ago my '86 4WD Subaru wagon rusted out from 14 years of surf fishing and general abuse (I can think of 6 times it was floated in salt water) and I got a few hundred for it. Nice car for $11k new, dual-range 5-speed, skid plate, armored exhaust, adjustable rear shocks. So I sold my '92 Camry for $5k (paid $11k, had it 6 years) and bought a new Forester with leather, moonroof, 6 CD in-dash and all the other options for $24k. Wrote a check for it and didn't hurt myself too badly. Yeah, I remember paying $2200 for a new Datsun with stereo and AC. Heck, I remember when a new '65 VW bug for my mom was right at $1600 with a radio and trim rings on the wheels. Of course, McDonalds was paying $1.15-$1.65 an hour, too.

Hey, being middled-aged ain't so bad after all. :) Except for the hamstring I pulled 3 weeks ago.

My next door neighbor (the other one, not the retired lady who signs for all my gun stuff) just bought a V8 VW Taureg. Another nice ride.

I'd like a really showy car, but I walk to work and just can't see tying up a bunch o' bucks - like $50k or $60k - in a car that sits all day at the curb collecting bird droppings. Especially since I'm the one feeding the birds.

Okay, back to scope shopping.

John
