I'm looking for a good rifle vise for rifles and shotguns. Does anyone have advice on some good ones, what to look for, features, etc.?
Where would you buy it? Brownells, Midway, etc?
Thanks!

I use a homemade one very similiar to this.

Midway has a broad selection of different ones.
They all seem way too expensive for what you get!

rc,
I saw that one. It looks pretty spiffy. Then I saw the ones that are adjustable and thought they may have offer a lot of versatility for various types of rifles and shotguns.
Thanks for the info.

I use both the basic Tipton vise from Midway and also the full-featured one. I would not buy another of the expensive vises. The simple one is more useful for what I do.

Best I have seen (and used) is a normal vise, with wooden inserts so that the teeth of the vice don't scratch the gun. The vise holds onto the barrel. The stock is supported by a stand that you can change the elevation on... basically a metal plate with a tube welded on, with another tube fitting in there with a cushioned top. Elevation is changed by moving the tub and securing it with a screw.
I hope you can picture that... :)

I might add that I have a Quick-Release Woodworkers vice that I use for heavy duty stock work.
It has hardwood jaw liners, and I use a folded up bath towel for padding.

Keep an eye on garage & estate sales as they sometimes turn up, cheap!
Also, Harbor Freight has a cheap one that should get the job done:

I picked up a used Tipton vise at a gunshow 2 years ago for 25$.
It's served my purpose well.
