Hi guys,
I have some Hornady 170 grain interlocks for the 30-30 that I've been loading.
I started at 31 grains of Winchester 760 and am up to 32.5 now. I don't have a Hornady manual so I've been approximating from my other manuals with 170 grain data.

Can someone with a Hornady manual tell me what the minimum and maximum are for these bullets?

The Hodgden site lists 33.6 for max load of Win 760 and 170 gr bullet. The bullet weight is usually more important than the brand of bullet.

It's not the best powder for the 30-30, but will work. It's really too slow burning, Win 748 and a bunch of other powders work much better and will easily give 200fps more, especially if you have a carbine length barrel.

Goon, 748 and 3031 are my two best favorites for the 30-30 w/ the 170gr bullets.

I'll probably try 748 and see what I get.
I started with 760 because it's what I have the most of. I use it a lot in my FAL and like it for that rifle. It also meters very well through my powder measure (but so does 748).
I like using the same powder, even if isn't quite the "best" because it means there are fewer ways to make a mistake on my reloading bench if I only have one type of powder for rifles.
As it is, I don't think I'm quite high enough on powder/pressure yet. Recoil is still pretty light and I think that with 32 grains of 760 I'm just starting to "get there".
I didn't shoot for groups but I did put four shots into about an inch at 40 yards offhand last night during my last trial.
Think I'll go to 32.5, then 33, then probably not any higher than that.

BTW - bullet type/brand can make a difference. Some bullets may have more bearing surface than others or allow more internal case capacity than other brands with the same weight. These things can affect pressure.
I've found that it's not enough that there isn't a lot of overlap but there is enough that it pays to be just a little cautious if you don't have exact data.
