Sunday through friday I edc one, usually more, of my trusty knives in various flavors and denominations, Schrade, Buck, Case, Moore Maker, SAK.
Quality knives kept clean and sharp.

All made in the USA except the few Shrade Irelands. No safe queens , they all work. The only semi retired knive I have is an old randall bought in 1964 and carried it all through my tour in the Nam. It does hunting duty 2 times a year.

Saturday is a different story. The Usual chores get done, and the "honey do" list gets attacked. For Saturday I use my "B" list,yard sale, knives. Usually several Offshore no names. One Ozark Trail, and two Rough Riders.

Why?, because it is not unusual to pry, chop, slash, strip, scrape, open or trim all manner of things from brush to radiator hoses. I will not expose my good knives to this potential abuse.

So now your saying "Whats your point Doc?"

Here it is.

The 420 no names survive to be resharpened. (Which i love to do) or get given away, to be replaced by the next yard sale find. The Ozark trail soldiers on.

But the real surprise here is the Rough Riders, they hold up. 440A steel, good fit and finish, and they do the job, week after week.

They will never be in the edc rotation But i have ordered a few from bladematrix ( inexpensive) for toolbox, tackle box, and truck duty. Might even give some for gifts.

I have a friend who has bought a few of the Rough Rider pocket knives. I've heard nothing but praise for them in the roll Chet gives them; that of a using cutting tool. Good fit and finish, good enough edge holding, gets the job done. What more can you ask of a low cost knife?

SuperKnife folding utility knife. Hey, it's called "utility" for a reason! If I abuse the blade too much, I just put in a new one.


I agree, though, that RR makes a surprisingly good knife for the price.

bought my dad and my father in law each one a few years back for fathers day. they both still carry them 100% of the time for the general chores they might need a knife for. had no complaints on them.

I'm probably the oddball in that I carry the same Sebenza day after day. It has done everything a normal person would ask of it and plenty of extraordinary things as well. Holds an edge, sharpens easily, takes tons of rough treatment and still looks good after 6 years.

Unless, of course, I find a a stupid fabulous bargain on one.

Chris and his gnomes will clean and repair for nearly nothing. Mine is just the plain small and you'd never know it's been used (much less used to cut open a steel drum).

All that aside, it had better be able to do "Saturday Duty" at the price they go for!

There are plenty of sturdy "Saturday" knives out there. Heck, the CRKT Stubby Razel does great as a "Saturday" knife.

No Saturday knife here.

My vintage Camillus utility made my son and I two hiking sticks yesterday.Cut through the base and tops of the saplings and hacked off the branches nicely.

(I had made one with my 7OT,then my son asked if a small pocket knife would work,so out came my Camillus. When my son was cutting down his he did express some concern about breaking my knife.It didn't break with proper knife use.;))

OK bikerdoc,I got a bone to pick with you.

So here I am walking through a fleamarket today. I see a rough looking Utility on a table,cell scales have shrunk, rust on the blades, main blade has gone through a electric sharpener on a can opener. But the blades are nice and tight, great snap.

So I hear myself say "How much?" he says $3.

The next thing I hear myself say is "What the h@!!, I don't have a Saturday knife."

Frosts mora. Cheap, Great steel, holds and edge. And best of all, easy to sharpen again because of it's thin grind. I have 2, 4" ones, a stainless (military green one), and a black tri-flex blade (differential tempered carbon steel). Each cost around $12.

If I broke one, I would be:
Astonished I was trying that hard,
Be slightly disappointing that I lost one of my moras,
Realize it was only a few dollars,
get a real pry bar, and not use a knife,
order another when I finished the job.

Have had one just like it in the left pocket for many years. And i will use everything on it on saturday except the blade.

Can solve almost any problem with a utility. Would like to find one with a phillips head!!!

My Saturday knives are pretty much the same as my weekday knives. Well, except for the Woodsman's Pal. (http://woodmanspal.com/tools/284.html) That one might raise an eyebrow or two if carried in town during the week ... :D

I carry pocket knives for light cutting during the week. A Byrd Caracara and a CRKT Pazoda or M21. For heavier cutting I carry a Frosts Mora. I always carry a prybar and a few other tools with me, prying with a knife has never ended well for me. I had a Winchester/ something, idk what, snap at the hilt and go straight for my crotch. It didn't go through my jeans, but it left a mark on my thigh for a few days. As for flea markets and the like around here, all you'll find are antiques and furniture, that kind of stuff.
