Atlanta shooters

Since we don't have any Regional forums, I am not sure where to post this.
Anyways, I heard of a outdoor shooting range somewhere near Resaca, Georgia. Something like "John's Mountain" or something similar to that.
Anyways, anyone know of this range? Is it any good? Do they have a website?

Thanks for the list. I really would like to get some cheap outdoors practice. $10.00 per hour in a dank indoor range is getting old.
I can't find a map with the WMA's on it. Any idea on which of these is closest to Atlanta / Cobb Co.?

Wow, thanks for the listing. I had no idea there were that many ranges. I am looking for something affordable near Kennesaw. I have been to all of the indoor ranges around here, and would like to try some of the outdoor ranges soon.
What does "WMA" mean?

The John's Mountain range is pretty ok, it's not that hard to get to, but it is pretty small. The WMA range that I like the best is Charlie Elliot, it's a little bit past Covington on I-20 going away from Atlanta. They have both pistol and rifle ranges there.

Lightsped,
There's an outdoor range in Temple, GA called Advanced Bullets (advancedbullets.com). I haven't been there yet as it's still a pretty good hike for me from Powder Springs. They're also not open past 5pm or on Sundays.
Oh yeah, WMA stands for Wildlife Management Area. You can link to the full list of WMAs from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Website. They sure could use some good maps on that site so I could figure out driving distances...

Yeah, I went to advancedbullets.com. That is a very nice down to earth outdoor range. No snobby prices, no snobby rules. 100 yard rifle lanes. The only thing I don't like is that it is a pretty far drive for me in Kennesaw.
If you are in or near that area, definatley give advancedbullets a try. Highly worth it.

I've been up to John's Mountain range once shooting with a buddy that lived up there, it's not far off of 75 up in Floyd county if I remember correctly, if you search you can find directions. It's fairly nice, has pvc lined holes at different ranges that serve as holes for big wooden poles to hold targets. 100 yard maximum range, the closest set of holes was 25 yards I believe (can't remember). Unless I'm mistaken they want $5 per day per car. It only has about 6 or so shooting positions, but when I was there it was empty all day anyway.
That Charlie Elliot range is always soooo busy I avoid it, it is the nicest range I've seen around here and free. The one I usually go to is the Wilson Shoals WMA range up 85 a ways, but I'm over here in Gwinnett, I think that John's Mountain one is the closest to Cobb. There is a WMA range up north of Atl though if I'm not mistaken, haven't been to it so I'm not sure of the exact location...

I will definately have to check on the John Mountain range. That Charlie Elliot range sounds promissing too. How is it free?
I am happy to know we have more shooting ranges around here than I intially thought. :)

Wow, I had no idea that there were so many fellow THR'ers in my neck of the woods. I live about 10 minutes from Charlie Elliott and can't seem to get there but maybe once a month.:( MAKOwner, you're right that it's pretty crowded but I guess I can deal with it. Midweek isn't too bad though.
See you there,
Stay safe.

Yes, there are alot of people in ATL, and we had no idea about each other. We could be having range sessions and whatnot. This is why I have been pushing to get the THR folks to activate some Regional Forums. This would allow people to set up range sessions, or help each other out with gun related issues.
Might want to check my thread in the "Tech Support" area. Add a reply to it.

here is some more info....
follow this link then scroll to bottom for "shooting ranges" ...
http://georgiawildlife.dnr.state.ga.us/content/displaycontent.asp?txtDocument=12
work it from there on ...
By the way, technically Charlie Elliot is not "free". There is a payment box ($3?) at the first info area/bulletin board pull off on main road. Also, go on over to the Education Center and look around there little Natural Musuem. DONATE SOME MONEY. That what keeps that range so nice. Plus you can see Charlie Elliotts study setup as he kept it ... a model for all Mens Studies.
I like the range alot, nicest in state. Cobb County folks might want to check with the Cobb PD to see if they allow civilians on the range at any time. Dekalb does this, but only during weekdays.
Maybe we need a Georgia THR shoot out at Charlie Elliot??????
Have you all looked into the Private Ranges??? Or how about /hunting leases with good ranges... anybody have one?

A regional forum and occasional meets would be huge - especially for a relative newbie like me who gets most of his firearms info online.
After shooting in my first IDPA match this week, I know I could use lots of practice time on a range where I can draw, move, and engage several targets. Can't do that indoors at Hot Shots...

How do you like shooting at hotshots. It's just up the road from me but I've never been. I've heard mixed things about the range. I usually shoot at American Classic Marksman in Norcross because its about a 2 minute drive from where I work, but its just too damn far for any weekend shooting.

From Atlanta:
Take I-75 NORTH to exit 320. There will be a Flying J truck stop at that exit.
Turn LEFT at the exit away from the Flying J truck stop.
Drive 6.5 miles until the road dead ends.
Turn RIGHT at the junction.
Drive 1/4 of a mile.
Turn RIGHT at the SHOOTING RANGE sign onto a gravel road.
The range is 1/2 mile down the road. Pay $5 at the fee station per vehicle and you can shoot all day long. Be aware that they have a habit of changing the hours on the range. I was there a week ago, and it was open from 9 AM until dark during the week, and the weekend hours are different. I brought about 40 milk jugs filled with water to be "brought to justice" at 100 yards. I have some good pics and video.

Hot Shots is nice, it's about 7 minutes from where I live. It's a good traditional indoor range, with I think about 10 lanes with the traditional moveable target holder. I think the range goes out to 50 feet. It's well-ventilated and you can adjust the lights in your shooting bay.
It is good for what it is, but pretty much all you can do is stand there and punch holes in paper. I go there occasionally, especially when I have a new gun and want to try it out, and don't want to drive to any of the outdoor ranges, but I prefer the outdoor ones.
I haven't been to American Classic Marksman yet, I'm itching to at least try out IDPA there, are the IDPA shoots still on Wednesday nights?
I've got to get to one of the WMA ranges soon, so that I can start working up my loads for deer season.

I think so. I haven't done one yet but I'm itching to try one as well.
Since I just started shooting again after a long absence, I've been going to American about twice a week for the last 4 or 5 weeks. Besides being 2 minutes from where I work, I can go shoot during lunch, pay my $7 and shoot as long as I want, and go again after work and not have to pay the range fee again. Their gun rental is pretty cheap as well. For $5 you can shoot any gun they have.

Thanks for the info on John's Mountain. I'll definately be trying that range out in the very near future. I got several new guns that I have never fired that need trying out...
Would anyone be interested in a THR meet at John's Mountain?

I shoot IDPA at American Classic when I can as it's on the way home from work (sort of). I haven't been in a few weeks though. Mark Mayo is the rangemaster and a nice guy. I shoot IDPA with him at South River Gun Club too. Just look for an old fart with a long grey ponytail.:D
See you there.

Monkeyman -
I couldn't agree with you more about Mark Mayo - and he's a hell of a shooter too.
I plan to shoot IDPA up at ACM as much as possible as well. I just have to wait for my application to go through (I guess).
My only gripe is the distance I've got to drive thru rush hour traffic on Wednesday nights, but it was worth it.
