It is a barrel that has been removed from a receiver. Barrels are sometimes removed from new guns if the owner is customizing the gun. Barrels are sometimes removed because they are damaged or inaccurate.

Okay, so in this case, that means an extra barrel you have in your closet, not one that you can easily take off and replace with another as the spirit moves you, right?

Sam - thanks. I saw a reference on the web and thought it might have something to do with an old American Rifleman article by C. E. Harris on interchangeable barrels. He concluded that, after taking the proper set-up precautions, you could get by with a barrel replacement that was merely hand-tightened. I haven't seen anything about it since then, though.
