Ok, i have the cash for one rifle and I have one spot left in the safe to put the rifle. Now I just have to figure out whether my last slot will have a M4gery or M1A in it. It's going to be a long time before I get a new safe, so this is a tough choice. I'd do both, but in the area I'm living in right now, leaving a rifle out of the safe would be a VERY bad idea.

I already have an AR-15 from White Oak Precision for Highpower competion and I have a 308 bolt rifle for when I want to reach out and put a hole in something (paper).

So what do you think?

I'd say M4-----had a M1A---put 40 rounds through it and promptly traded it off----was nothing like I expected-----and after having one I doubt I'll ever own another .308 semi-auto-----there a lot better guns you can get for over a grand IMHO.

M4geries are so passe'. I'm sorry, but in my opinion, the barrel with the cut for the M203 mounting bracket and the fake non-collapsing stock is just ridiculous.

But what it really boils down to is whether or not you want a real, full sized rifle or a small carbine.

Every one of the M1-A's I've shot gave great accuracy even with GI ball ammo. Great meaning under 2" at 100yds with the peep sights.

The previously mentioned 40rds is hardly enough to break in the barrel on any rifle.

Get an M1-A youcan get an M-4 later maybe find a used one in good condition for under a grand.;)

40 rounds was enough to know I didn't like it---was accurate enough I guess----just did nothing for me.

Guess I prefer the AR sprooing to the M1A ping.

Split the difference. Get an AR-10.

seems to me both your highpower rifle and the .308 rifle are geared for precise fire far away.. the carbine fills a notch the M1A wouldn't.

really though, I think in this case it just comes down to what gives your the most warm fuzzies. :)

Oh.. one other thing to keep in mind. When the AWB sunsets next year, you're looking at less parts to change on the M1A to being it back to it's full glory. (just swap the FS/bayo lug assembly as opposed to swapping out the stock, front sight base, chopping the muzzle break and threading the muzzle and....) :)

Got reloading equipment yet?

An AR with optics takes up almost 2 guns. Why? Optics (especially if mounted on carrying handle). Pistol grip. Rather obtrusive. Most safe interiors are designed for unscoped weapons. That way they can sell you the safe with the illusion that you can fit X guns in. In reality, it's 2/3 x X for a more approximate and comfortable #. Then again, there's folks like me who stack things muzzle down  just to get more things in. :o

My vote? Go AR. They're affordable and less finicky than the M1/M14.

Hummmmmm, stack some of the rifles muzzle down. Hummmmm, I may just have to try that and see if I come up with more room! ;)

Still on the fence on which one I want. Anyone else have some experience with the M14s from West Texas Ordinance?

Hi Steve - Unfortunately no, I haven't started reloading yet and yes I'm spending WAY to much money on ammo. I really should get started. The problem with reloading for me is that due to a way overdue divorce :D I'm now living in a very very small apartment. I can see it now. I'll invite a girlfriend over to show her the place. This is the kitchen/living room, oh here's the bathroom and here is my bedroom/Ammo reloading room/gun storage room. Forgive the mess, just kick that gunpowder can out of the way so you don't trip on it. LOL I'll be looking for a house shortly and then Mantown will have all the goodies needed to start reloading. Actually can't wait for that.

You have an AR-15.
You have a .308 bolt gun.

My advice? Buy a 16" upper (if you feel the need), and a good AK.

My advice is to forget a new gun and use the money for divorce needs/apartment upgrades, and reloading equipment.

Sorry to hear about the divorce. You'll be receiving your Divorcee's Club membership packet any day now.

less finicky than the M1/M14.

ROFLMAO!!! That's what all the Nam vets said about them too, when compared with the M14, right? :D :p

West Texas Ordanances makes outstanding rifles. I had them build me an M14 and a M1 Garand in .308 (back when they were offered for $750). Best way to go for all USGI parts and professional results.

I vote M1A. Hard-hitting battlerifle.

On second thought, I just shot my M1 Carbine this morning... kept 1- shots inside 5", rapid-fire at 50 yards shooting prone (not benchrest)... I really do love that light, fast rifle.

Gotta at least one in your safe! Fun for the whole family, great transition to rifles for new shooters and kids.

Tell us again about your combat experience with either rifle, Blain.
