actually i'd be interested in knowing ballpark figure for cost -- i have a 3" gp100 and thought about having similar work done (or keeping the gp100 stock and getting an sp101 like this -- sounds familiar eh?).
looks very nice.

Gary,
That's a VERY, VERY nice revolver and great photos too!! Maybe a stupid question, but the hammer looks like it's thinner as well as being bobbed so did Mark have to change any springs to account for the lighter hammer. Have you shot it yet? How about a photo or two of the back end of the cylinder showing the chamfered cylinders. This is something that I'm interested in having done on a couple of revolvers.

That is possibly the nicest SP I've ever seen! That's a very nice pair you have there.
Yeah, really, where's DHart been? That guy was crazy about 3" .357's and his exceedingly excellent photography showed it.

August 27, 2008, 11:59 AM
Very nice!
Talking about customizations, I really wish that someone would come out with a S&W style hammer for the Ruger's. The factory, squared design, could use some improvement. Ruger also needs to smooth the trigger face on their guns. They do tend to be sharp and can cut or pull up a blister on the trigger finger after a box of full power loads.

Beautiful gun! I sent a link to my girlfriend and now she wants one just like it, though she isn't sold on DAO yet.
Do you notice any recoil difference with the weight shaving? I imagine it's negligible, and the 3" barrel already gives a slight advantage over the shorter model.

Wow! Looking at photo #6, the one looking down the bbl over the sights from the operator's perspective... this is the first time looking at a "fiber-optic" sight in green. (Well, except for my 1970 Ithaca mod 37 Featherlight 20ga, which of course is "Merthiolate Orange").
While not exactly "low-light", it is in the shade, and is Super Visible. Pretty darned impressive.
Thanks for these pics. If you can, will you retake photo #6 in even lower light, please.
I know that it's waaay off the scale to say so, but that pic, in time may have changed my life.

I'll add my kudos on that custom work, any Ruger that loses the billboard is instantly improved! I like a lot of weight in front of my knuckles, and would have balked at the slab-sided notion, but it looks GOOD.
I would also like to know what happened to DHart, I started my gunporn collection when I saw his photos several years ago, and knew I had to have them. He and I have a real thing for three-inch revolvers, and he always (somehow) put the best grips money can buy on them. The guy had more Spegal Grips than Craig Spegal does! Absolutely awe-inspiring photography, and I say that as a pretty good amateur. I haven't seen anything from him in several months, if not longer. Anybody know where he's hiding? Is he okay?

BTW - I've posted this thread/pics elsewhere and I was getting questions about what camera equipment, lighting, etc. I used.....
ery nice guns! Could you give us some details about the photography? I sure need to upgrade my camera and learn photo techniques like these!
Any info about camera, lighting, settings, etc. would be appreciated. Some of the best I've seen.
Tee Hee!
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a381/garyinpennsylvania/thROFL.gif
Ya don't wanna know dude! But I'll share it anyway.
Lighting was provided by God. I was outside on a wooden bench set among the landscaping of the pool deck. It was partly sunny. You can even see the sun-line where the shadow from my roof cut across the bench.
The wooden mallet was to help prop the weapons up. The wood has enough 'friction' to hold the stainless yet not mar the finish.....plus it's a cool looking 'rustic' prop!
Here's the best part - I think my camera equipment may be out of reach for most common folks.......because it's discontinued!!!
The camera is a year old. Cannon PowerShot SD750 digital ELPH @ 7.1 Mega Pixels. Bought from Amazon.com
Sounds fancy, eh??? Tis ain't! See it here: http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-SD750-Digital-Optical/dp/B000NK6J6Q/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1220131507&sr=8-1
OK....so it's not discontinued.....but it has been surpassed by a more recent/better model.
The camera has served me very well. It has a lot of functionality....but I usually set it to "idiot" (full auto)....all I do is select the environment I'm shooting (Nature, outside, beach, indoor, portrait, fireworks, etc...)
For the closeups....I do know how to override the idiot mode and work with DIGITAL MACRO which translates to "take really cool close-up pics".
I took 77 pics total in this session......and posted the best.
Sorry I couldn't wow you with equipment/settings/skill.
Armed with the above camera.....you can do this too.
----
OH - I did use one trick -http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00009RUCH
It's neat and TINY. About 3/4 the size of a pencil. It's also flexible. For some of the up-close MACRO shots, I set up the camera tripod stacked on children's Little Golden Books with the camera time set to either 2 or 10 seconds. That way, the camera is super stable when the shutter cycles. That makes for higher definition (sharp edges) close up pics.
Hope that helps!

Ohhhhhh.....
And that is where I've done this Ruger beauty a disservice.
I live in Pennsylvania and carry my firearms Open Carry at all times. Right now, my dailly carry is mostly my XD45 in a Blackhawk Serpa.
I don't yet have a good OWB holster for this SP-101, so for now it rides in a cheapie.

Took 'er to the range yesterday.
Suuu-weeeet shooter! I really like how smooth the action job turned out!
It's real easy with .38spl's.
.357 158gr Gold Dots?? Yup - you'll notice 'em! Still shot VERY well.
Yesterday was a brilliant deep blue sky sunny day.......you shoulda seen how kick-ass that front fiber site was!
Secretly though.....and don't share this with my SP......my 3" GP-100 AMAZES me with how well it shoots/feels! .38spl's are nuthin' and even heavy .357's are easily manageable.
It was a good time!

Listen folks..........
No - I am not in need of medication...
BUT this absolutely GORGEOUS SP-101 is about to go up for trade.
And I'm gonna loose major money on the trade.
I'm getting desperate - I WANT, NEED, MUST HAVE a KGPF-340. That is a Ruger GP-100 4" short shroud. I DO NOT want any of those police turn-ins (with the bobbed hammer).
I cannot find ANY dealer who has one let alone NIB.
This is NOT the official WTT post.......but if you can point me in the right direction (or if you have one in pretty good shape).....
Reply or PM me.

Why not call Ruger customer service? They should be able to tell you if there's a distributor they sent one to.
