...one what you may ask?
Well that's the point of this thread. What is that one item that everyone should have? Which pistol? Shotgun? Rifle? Knife? Piece of Kit?
What item do you think no collection should be without?

LMAO Dan :D
chipperman is on the right track. More details though, please.
Which folder, bolt gun, etc.
For example, if you're going to have a 45ACP I would say it has to be a 1911. Someone else may prefer the Sig P220.
Add to chipperman's categories if you think he missed something, or specify which gun, knife, etc for the categories you agree with.

Which SPECIFIC MODEL of EACH ONE OF THOSE?
You might as well condense all of THR into one thread. Each category is almost a forum unto itself.
Let me make this simple. If you shoot, you need a .22--either long gun or handgun, depending on your interests. Don't care if its a 10/22, Marlin 60, CZ, Buckmark, Ruger, etc.

Everyone should have the following: .22 (longgun, handgun, it don't matter), 1911, S&W wheelgun, Big 4 shotgun, high-caliber bolt rifle, and either AR or AK (or both).

A pistol in 9mm that will handle NATO spec ammo, preferably a Glock or CZ.
A semi auto rifle in 5.56NATO, preferably an AR-15.
A scoped bolt action rifle in 7.62NATO, like a Savage 10FP, or a Remington 700.
A semi auto rifle in 7.62x39, preferably an SKS or AK-47 variant.
I think its important that our arms can use military ammo incase we need to take some off fallen soldiers, be they our soldiers or enemy soldiers. The worst thing that could happen in a fight for life and freedom is running out of ammo for your gun.

It's almost un-American not to own a lever action 30-30 rifle.!!! A good 12ga. pump (870, Mossy etc) and a good 357 revolver are all must haves. (Ruger, S&W) . A reliable 22 semi-auto like the 10/22 . And then look for a good 223 semi-auto like a AR or a Mini 14. Plenty of mags too. And a nice reliable centerfire handgun comes next (9mm, 40, 45acp) and plenty of ammo for all of them. Then a good reliable 22 handgun will fill out the list. Revolver or auto as you like. and a couple of extra mags if its a semi! An accurate medium to large caliber bolt action rifle with a good scope on it rounds out the must have's.

Horsesense. I am appalled at the complete lack of horsesense in the world.
That saidâ„¢, the following I pulled from an orifice that sunlight doesnt shine:
1000 rds of ammo for every rifle they have. Enough mags or clips for 500 of those rounds.
500 rds of ammo for every handgun and mags for 100-250. 200 rds for every shotgun.
All I have is an 8mm Mauser. Would that do for the high-power bolt?

1 Each of the following:
.22 rifle
12 guage shotgun, pump or semiauto
30 caliber rifle - either 308 or 30-06, or something similar
Any handgun of the users choice

If restricted to 1 item on the list, everyone should have a major caliber rifle[assuming they can use it]......everything else is a bonus;)

September 4, 2003, 08:56 PM
.22 rifle and pistol
hi-caliber rifle and pistol
wheelgun
shotgun
That's my list of absolute "must haves." (All I have left is the wheelgun.)
Anything else is just a "want."

Long--
.22 rifle (bolt or semi) ~ Ruger 10/22
.223 semi auto ~ 2 AR15's..
.308 semi ~ M1A National Match
lever gun ~ Working on it, probably an Marlin 1894
hi-power bolt gun ~ Mauser 98 in 308 (Logistical!!)
shotgun (pump or semi) ~ Browning Bottom Eject pump shotgun
Hand--
9mm semi auto ~ Why, when I have a Steyr M40 in .40S&W?
.45 semi auto ~ Why, when I have a Steyr M40 in .40S&W?
My .40S&W makes up for the 9mm and the .45. Small enough for CCW use, like 9mm, powerful enough as your regular sidearm. 2 in 1. Logistical..
.357 wheelgun ~ Ruger Sp101
.22 semi pistol ~ Ruger 22/45
Knife--
Good pocket folder ~ a few
Wow.. I'm just a lever gun short of a good list!

Hand--
9mm semi auto - got this covered with HiPower and Sig P226
.45 semi auto - two 1911s
.357 wheelgun - working on this one. Probably a S&W M19
.22 semi pistol - definitely, but which one?
Knife--
Good pocket folder - have a Benchmade and a Spyderco. What about a good custom
Long-- haven't started on these yet but ideas are
.22 rifle (bolt or semi) - CZ 452
.223 semi auto - Colt or Bushmaster M4
.308 semi - FAL
lever gun - not sure if I would include one but if I did a Model 94 with hoop handle (too much Rifleman as a kid :D )
hi-power bolt gun - Winchester pre '64 model 70 in 30-06
shotgun (pump or semi) -Rem 870
Somethings no one has mentioned -
What about a 38 snub, a fixed blade knife, a flashlight?
C.R. Sam I am with you on the brain part. And there are probably some educational materials that should be included. Bible and copy of Constitution come to mind. Other reading materials to "train the brain" as well, but don't want to get too far off topic.

Strong morals?

My $.02 (for what it's worth).
Everybody needs:
(1) A personal defense combat weapon, appropriate to your needs. This might be a .38 snubby for urban dwellers or a .44 magnum for Alaskans (or a .45 ACP 1911 for me:) ). Shoot many, many rounds and gain absolute confidence in your weapon/ skill level.
(2) A .22 handgun of a similar size/ configuration to #1, above. Fun and cheap to shoot. All shooting is good shooting and enhances hand/eye coordination and muscle memory.
(3) Hunting weapon(s). Deer rifle, shotgun, .22 rifle, etc. (Hey, I'm from the South. Everybody hunts, right? ;) )
(4) Anything else that's fun to shoot and affordable. Shooting IS fun to you all, right?
(5) Numbers 1 through 4 for your wife and children.

Lotsa people seem to think this. Lotsa survivalist types talk about having AR-15s for compatiblity with parts from US government sources.
Why?
If you're in a position to take ammunition from gov't sources, or off of dead soldiers, odds are you can take their weapons, too. The Afghanis fighting the Soviets didn't get semi-auto AKs so they could just use Sov ammo; they took AKs from dead soviet troops.
Kaylee's statement would make more sense if we could actually get real M16s (but even then I'd politely decline one, thank you).
But even then. In some kind of "uprising" scenario (don tin foil hats now) the resistance fighters will be using whatever weapons their oppressors are, plus whatever else they can smuggle in. Whether or not you have a semi AK or AR to begin with is immaterial.

I want to echo the post about the 12 gauge pump shotgun.
I love rifles.
I teach handgun shooting to make money to feed my rifle habit.
And I own only one shotgun.
But my Rem 870 is the only firearm I own which is equally good at home defense, bird hunting, deer hunting, range fun, etc. etc.
If you can own only one, get a shotgun.
If you can own more than one, get a shotgun first.

Nightcrawler... a couple reasons -- none of which are really related to the survivalist "SHTF fighting the government" reasons. One of these days I might expound on my opinions for that *ahem* "scenario," but that's not the case now.
The reasons I see for everyone owning the issue rifle are twofold.
First, more pragmatic, and of less importance is the sheer availability of parts and more importantly KNOWLEDGE on the open market. Lotsa lotsa gunsmiths out there who got their training as military armorers. Lots lotsa LOTSA magazines on the open market. That kinda thing.
The second and more important reason is one of principle. The same reason the DCM was created in the first place -- a nation full of people that ALREADY know their way around the issue rifle is an asset should there need to be a call-up. Further, the psychology of a universal reserve militia fosters more of a "we're all on the same side" attitude than the current professional army/forward-deployable national guard/increasingly-disarmed-civilian-citizenry set up. At least, to my mind it does.
Sure, in a perfect Republic riflery and drill would be taught in high school PE and you'ld keep an issue rifle (or self paid version of the same model if you're a libertarian ;) ) in the clost Swiss-style. That not being the case here.. one does the best they can.
:)

An accurate .22 rifle and a 12 or 20 gauge shotgun.
A very quick next ought to have is a high-powered rifle - .308, .270, 7mm08, 30-30 or 30-06.
Then a .45 ACP autoloader and a .357 wheelgun. Ought to be enough, but it never is...:D
