I secured a "new" property to bow hunt this fall,and discovered a fair amount of shingle oaks with heavy mast.There are few, if any (none I could find) other oaks on property.I have no experience with whitetail preference for shingle oak acorns,and experience would be greatly appreciated.

white oaks are best. then red or mountain oak. shingle and water oak are down there somewhere but if that is all there is to eat then they will be there.

janobles14,thanks for the input.I tried to find tannic acid levels for shingle oaks when I discovered them,but came up blank.Guess I'll have to let the deer "tell" me.

The squirrels may help you get an idea about the acorns too! They may be a bit sooner on the diagnosis than the deer, especially if your acorn are not on the top of the deer menu. BUT..., as the prime feed is consumed, I'd think the deer would then move to your acorns by default, maybe?

if you want to draw the deer to those acorns pour out grape Kool-Aid on a stump or rotten log nearby.

Thanks guys, Yes,there's a lot of other food in the area.I agree with you Dave,they will want them sooner or later. (if the rodents save any)Was just wondering if I could expect anything like "the white oak madness"that many of us have witnessed.
Marlin.. I've heard /read ? something about "that Kool-Aid thing",but haven't actually tried it.Sounds like it's worth putting in "the bag of tricks" if all else fails though.

The Kool-aide thing might be considered bait, so make sure its legal in your state to hunt over bait. Here in Iowa its illegal to deer hunt with bait, even salt blocks are considered bait.

It is legal in Ohio,but I prefer the "female" bait over the food bait.
