Here goes. . . I'll come back later on this one, after the smoke has settled. Your best bet is to go to 1911Forum.com. This is continually debated over there.

In a nut shell, the Series II has a Firing Pin Safety (FPS) - Swartz device activated by the grip safety, that some do and some do not like. With this are issues of quality control. Some feel that the quality has slipped with the Series II. The Series I (acutally the pre Series II) is the pistol that took the 1911 market. Kimber has made and does make a good quality 1911. But then other companies do also.

Dobe...just waiting for traffic...

Let's see how to explain the difference between Series I & Series II..... hmmmm...

Do you remember a few years ago when Coca-Cola dared to change their formula and everyone screamed blasphemy & heresy - "how dare you change the all American drink" blah, blah, blah...

In a nutshell... that's the difference between I & II. You got your "New" Coke and your "Classic" Coke...

Kimber dared to mess with the All American 1911... better or worse, safer or not... doesn't matter.

In anutshell: the series II has an added safety which most shooters consider to be unnecessary, and it has caused problems in a certain number of their guns which is endlessly disputed. Many wish that it was not there, subscribing to KISS (keep it simple stupid) or maybe KYFLOOMG (which is Keep Your F---ing Lawyers Out of My Gun).

I have three 1911s. Now, I will admit, I have never shot a 1911, but have shot alot with Glocks, Sigs, Berettas, etc...

My 1911s are:
Series 70 Colt Gov (made in the mid/late 70s - fired, but not by me)
Series 80 Colt 1991A1 (made in mid 90s - never fired)
Kimber Pro Carry Series 2 (made 2003 - never fired)

Just by handling and looking at these guns I can not tell a difference. I believe to really notice a difference, one would have to be a expert in building up 1911s. I think alot of it is the typical internet rumors/compalining that goes on in almost every forum.

Again, I could be wrong, and welcome any corrections if so.
