Has anyone had any experience with these? I just saw one at a shop and it looked real nice but I don't really know much about them. Is it a controlled feed? How do they shoot? It seemed nice and light and the finish was exactly what I'm looking for but I'd like to know a little more about them before making the purchase.

well the ammo is a bit on the expensive side and the carbines that you usualy see do have a nasty boot. Its also not a Mauser but a Styer design rifle. But they are a very solid good working gun.

I think he means the Mauser 1996 straight pull in standard calibers.
I saw a few in stores when the distributor was blowing them out because they did not catch on and read the magazine articles that tried to promote them. They seem to be functional and about as accurate as any other sporter, probably a bit faster to operate than a conventional turnbolt. The only thing I ever saw against them was that they were rather complicated to strip; be sure yours comes with instructions. I don't think they are controlled feed. Neither is a Remington like the Army and Marines use for sniper rifles. I wouldn't worry about it.

I just wonder why Mauser took a chance on an oddball new model when they could have introduced a centennial '98 and cleaned up.

Right, Jim! It's in 300-06 and looks like a winner. It's brand new in the box and is on sale for $400. I think I'm going to take it. It comes with Leupold style dovetail mounts factory installed and has a nice matte black finish.

I have one of these in 308 and it is the best rifle i have ever owned. Sure it takes getting used to with the strait pull but it is a lot quicker on the reacusition of the target.

Were these not originally Styer straight pull rifles, that took on the Mauser name after the merger in the late 90s?

Styer now markets some of their rifles here in the US under the BLAZER name.
